+    <heading>Warning Against False Teachers</heading>

+    <verse num="3"><crossref let="g" cid="c54001003.1"/>As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not <crossref let="h" cid="c54001003.2"/>to teach any different doctrine,</verse>

+    <heading>Christ Jesus Came to Save Sinners</heading>

+    <heading>Pray for All People</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="1">First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people,</verse>

+    <verse num="2"><crossref let="v" cid="c54002002.1"/>for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and <crossref let="w" cid="c54002002.2"/>dignified in every way.</verse>

+    <verse num="3">This is good, and <crossref let="x" cid="c54002003.1"/>it is pleasing in the sight of <crossref let="y" cid="c54002003.2"/>God our Savior,</verse>

+    <verse num="4">who desires <crossref let="z" cid="c54002004.1"/>all people to be saved and <crossref let="a" cid="c54002004.2"/>to come to <crossref let="b" cid="c54002004.3"/>the knowledge of the truth.</verse>

+    <verse num="10"><crossref let="n" cid="c54002010.1"/>but with what is proper for women who profess godliness&emdash;with good works.</verse>

+    <verse num="11">Let a woman learn quietly <crossref let="o" cid="c54002011.1"/>with all submissiveness.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v54002012"/>
+    <verse num="12"><crossref let="p" cid="c54002012.1"/>I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v54002013"/>
+    <verse num="13"><crossref let="q" cid="c54002013.1"/>For Adam was formed first, <crossref let="r" cid="c54002013.2"/>then Eve;</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v54002014"/>
+    <verse num="14">and Adam was not deceived, but <crossref let="s" cid="c54002014.1"/>the woman was deceived and became a transgressor.</verse>

+    <verse num="15">Yet she will be saved through <crossref let="t" cid="c54002015.1"/>childbearing&emdash;if they continue in <crossref let="u" cid="c54002015.2"/>faith and love and holiness, with self-control.</verse>

+  <chapter num="3">
+    <heading>Qualifications for Overseers</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="1">The saying is <crossref let="v" cid="c54003001.1"/>trustworthy: If anyone aspires to <crossref let="w" cid="c54003001.2"/>the office of overseer, he desires a noble task.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v54003002"/>
+    <verse num="2">Therefore <crossref let="x" cid="c54003002.1"/>an overseer<note nid="n54003002.1"/> must be above reproach, <crossref let="y" cid="c54003002.2"/>the husband of one wife,<note nid="n54003002.2"/> <crossref let="z" cid="c54003002.3"/>sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, <crossref let="a" cid="c54003002.4"/>hospitable, <crossref let="b" cid="c54003002.5"/>able to teach,</verse>

+    <verse num="3">not a drunkard, not violent but <crossref let="c" cid="c54003003.1"/>gentle, not quarrelsome, <crossref let="d" cid="c54003003.2"/>not a lover of money.</verse>

+    <verse num="4">He must manage his own household well, with all dignity <crossref let="e" cid="c54003004.1"/>keeping his children submissive,</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v54003005"/>
+    <verse num="5">for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for <crossref let="w" cid="c54003005.1"/>God&apos;s church?</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v54003006"/>
+    <verse num="6">He must not be a recent convert, or he may <crossref let="f" cid="c54003006.1"/>become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v54003007"/>
+    <verse num="7">Moreover, he must be well thought of by <crossref let="g" cid="c54003007.1"/>outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into <crossref let="h" cid="c54003007.2"/>a snare of the devil.</verse>

+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v54003008"/>
+    <heading>Qualifications for Deacons</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="8"><crossref let="i" cid="c54003008.1"/>Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued,<note nid="n54003008.1"/> <crossref let="j" cid="c54003008.2"/>not addicted to much wine, <crossref let="k" cid="c54003008.3"/>not greedy for dishonest gain.</verse>

+    <verse num="9">They must <crossref let="l" cid="c54003009.1"/>hold the mystery of the faith with <crossref let="m" cid="c54003009.2"/>a clear conscience.</verse>

+    <verse num="10">And <crossref let="n" cid="c54003010.1"/>let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v54003011"/>
+    <verse num="11"><crossref let="o" cid="c54003011.1"/>Their wives likewise<note nid="n54003011.1"/> must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, <crossref let="p" cid="c54003011.2"/>faithful in all things.</verse>

+    <verse num="12">Let deacons each be <crossref let="q" cid="c54003012.1"/>the husband of one wife, <crossref let="q" cid="c54003012.2"/>managing their children and their own households well.</verse>

+    <verse num="13">For <crossref let="r" cid="c54003013.1"/>those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.</verse>

+    <heading>The Mystery of Godliness</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="14">I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that,</verse>

+    <verse num="15">if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v54003016"/>
+    <verse num="16">Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness:

+    <heading>Some Will Depart from the Faith</heading>

+    <verse num="1">Now <crossref let="x" cid="c54004001.1"/>the Spirit expressly says that <crossref let="y" cid="c54004001.2"/>in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to <crossref let="z" cid="c54004001.3"/>deceitful spirits and teachings of demons,</verse>

+    <verse num="2">through the insincerity of <crossref let="a" cid="c54004002.1"/>liars whose consciences are seared,</verse>

+    <verse num="3"><crossref let="b" cid="c54004003.1"/>who forbid marriage and <crossref let="c" cid="c54004003.2"/>require abstinence from foods <crossref let="d" cid="c54004003.3"/>that God created <crossref let="e" cid="c54004003.4"/>to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.</verse>

+    <verse num="4">For <crossref let="f" cid="c54004004.1"/>everything created by God is good, and <crossref let="g" cid="c54004004.2"/>nothing is to be rejected if it is <crossref let="e" cid="c54004004.3"/>received with thanksgiving,</verse>

+    <verse num="5">for it is made holy <crossref let="h" cid="c54004005.1"/>by the word of God and prayer.</verse>

+    <heading>A Good Servant of Christ Jesus</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="6"><crossref let="i" cid="c54004006.1"/>If you put these things before the brothers,<note nid="n54004006.1"/> you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have <crossref let="j" cid="c54004006.2"/>followed.</verse>

+    <verse num="7">Have nothing to do with irreverent, <crossref let="k" cid="c54004007.1"/>silly myths. Rather <crossref let="l" cid="c54004007.2"/>train yourself for godliness;</verse>

+    <verse num="8">for while <crossref let="m" cid="c54004008.1"/>bodily training is of some value, godliness <crossref let="n" cid="c54004008.2"/>is of value in every way, as <crossref let="o" cid="c54004008.3"/>it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.</verse>

+    <verse num="9">The saying is <crossref let="p" cid="c54004009.1"/>trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance.</verse>

+    <verse num="13">Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching.</verse>

+    <verse num="14"><crossref let="u" cid="c54004014.1"/>Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you <crossref let="v" cid="c54004014.2"/>by prophecy when the council of elders <crossref let="w" cid="c54004014.3"/>laid their hands on you.</verse>

+    <verse num="15">Practice these things, immerse yourself in them,<note nid="n54004015.1"/> so that <crossref let="x" cid="c54004015.1"/>all may see your progress.</verse>

+    <verse num="16"><crossref let="y" cid="c54004016.1"/>Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save <crossref let="z" cid="c54004016.2"/>both yourself and <crossref let="a" cid="c54004016.3"/>your hearers.</verse>

+    <heading>Instructions for the Church</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="1"><crossref let="b" cid="c54005001.1"/>Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, <crossref let="c" cid="c54005001.2"/>younger men as brothers,</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v54005002"/>
+    <verse num="2">older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity.</verse>
+    <end-paragraph/>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v54005003"/>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="3">Honor widows <crossref let="d" cid="c54005003.1"/>who are truly widows.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v54005004"/>
+    <verse num="4">But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn <crossref let="e" cid="c54005004.1"/>to show godliness to their own household and to make some return to their parents, for <crossref let="f" cid="c54005004.2"/>this is pleasing in the sight of God.</verse>

+    <verse num="5">She <crossref let="g" cid="c54005005.1"/>who is truly a widow, left all alone, has set her hope on God and <crossref let="h" cid="c54005005.2"/>continues in supplications and prayers night and day,</verse>

+    <verse num="2">Those who have believing masters must not be disrespectful on the ground that they are <crossref let="q" cid="c54006002.1"/>brothers; rather they must serve all the better since those who benefit by their good service are believers and beloved.

+    <heading>False Teachers and True Contentment</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+                   <crossref let="r" cid="c54006002.2"/>Teach and urge these things.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v54006003"/>
+    <verse num="3">If anyone <crossref let="s" cid="c54006003.1"/>teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with <crossref let="t" cid="c54006003.2"/>the sound<note nid="n54006003.1"/> words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching <crossref let="u" cid="c54006003.3"/>that accords with godliness,</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v54006004"/>
+    <verse num="4"><crossref let="v" cid="c54006004.1"/>he is puffed up with conceit and <crossref let="w" cid="c54006004.2"/>understands nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for <crossref let="x" cid="c54006004.3"/>controversy and for <crossref let="y" cid="c54006004.4"/>quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions,</verse>

+    <verse num="5">and constant friction among people <crossref let="z" cid="c54006005.1"/>who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, <crossref let="a" cid="c54006005.2"/>imagining that godliness is a means of gain.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v54006006"/>
+    <verse num="6">But <crossref let="b" cid="c54006006.1"/>godliness <crossref let="c" cid="c54006006.2"/>with contentment is great gain,</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v54006007"/>
+    <verse num="7">for <crossref let="d" cid="c54006007.1"/>we brought nothing into the world, and<note nid="n54006007.1"/> we cannot take anything out of the world.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v54006008"/>
+    <verse num="8">But <crossref let="e" cid="c54006008.1"/>if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v54006009"/>
+    <verse num="9">But <crossref let="f" cid="c54006009.1"/>those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, <crossref let="g" cid="c54006009.2"/>into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that <crossref let="h" cid="c54006009.3"/>plunge people into ruin and destruction.</verse>

+    <verse num="10">For the love of money is a root of <crossref let="i" cid="c54006010.1"/>all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.</verse>

+    <heading>Fight the Good Fight of Faith</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="11">But as for you, <crossref let="j" cid="c54006011.1"/>O man of God, <crossref let="k" cid="c54006011.2"/>flee these things. <crossref let="l" cid="c54006011.3"/>Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.</verse>
