+    <verse num="2">but <crossref let="b" cid="c58001002.1"/>in these last days <crossref let="c" cid="c58001002.2"/>he has spoken to us by <crossref let="d" cid="c58001002.3"/>his Son, whom he appointed <crossref let="e" cid="c58001002.4"/>the heir of all things, <crossref let="f" cid="c58001002.5"/>through whom also he created <crossref let="g" cid="c58001002.6"/>the world.</verse>

+        <begin-line/>they will perish, but you remain;<end-line class="br"/>
+        <begin-line class="indent"/>they will all wear out like a garment,<end-line class="br"/>

+        <begin-line/>like a robe you will roll them up,<end-line class="br"/>

+    <verse num="14">Are they not all ministering spirits <crossref let="y" cid="c58001014.1"/>sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to <crossref let="z" cid="c58001014.2"/>inherit salvation?</verse>

+  </chapter>

+  <chapter num="2">
+    <heading>Warning Against Neglecting Salvation</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="1">Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58002002"/>
+    <verse num="2">For since <crossref let="a" cid="c58002002.1"/>the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and <crossref let="b" cid="c58002002.2"/>every transgression or disobedience received a just <crossref let="c" cid="c58002002.3"/>retribution,</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58002003"/>
+    <verse num="3"><crossref let="d" cid="c58002003.1"/>how shall we escape if we <crossref let="e" cid="c58002003.2"/>neglect such a great salvation? It was <crossref let="f" cid="c58002003.3"/>declared at first by the Lord, and it was <crossref let="g" cid="c58002003.4"/>attested to us <crossref let="h" cid="c58002003.5"/>by those who heard,</verse>

+    <verse num="4"><crossref let="g" cid="c58002004.1"/>while God also bore witness <crossref let="i" cid="c58002004.2"/>by signs and wonders and various miracles and by <crossref let="j" cid="c58002004.3"/>gifts of the Holy Spirit <crossref let="k" cid="c58002004.4"/>distributed according to his will.</verse>

+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58002005"/>
+    <heading>The Founder of Salvation</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="5">For it was not to angels that God subjected the world <crossref let="l" cid="c58002005.1"/>to come, of which we are speaking.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58002006"/>
+    <verse num="6">It has been testified somewhere,
+      <end-paragraph/>
+      <begin-block-indent/>
+      <begin-paragraph class="line-group"/>
+        <begin-line/><crossref let="m" cid="c58002006.1"/><crossref cid="t58002006.1"/><q class="begin-double" qid="58002006.1" from="58002006.1" to="58002008.1"/>What is man, that you are mindful of him,<end-line class="br"/>
+        <begin-line class="indent"/>or the son of man, that you care for him?<end-line class="br"/>
+    </verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58002007"/>
+    <verse num="7">
+        <begin-line/>You made him for a little while lower than the angels;<end-line class="br"/>
+        <begin-line class="indent"/>you have crowned him with glory and honor,<note nid="n58002007.1"/><end-line class="br"/>
+    </verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58002008"/>
+    <verse num="8">
+        <begin-line class="indent"/>putting everything in subjection under his feet.<q class="end-double" qid="58002008.1" from="58002006.1" to="58002008.1"/><end-line/>
+      <end-paragraph/>
+      <end-block-indent/>
+      <begin-paragraph class="same-paragraph"/>Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, <crossref let="n" cid="c58002008.1"/>we do not yet see everything in subjection to him.
+    </verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58002009"/>
+    <verse num="9">But we see him <crossref let="o" cid="c58002009.1"/>who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, <crossref let="p" cid="c58002009.2"/>crowned with glory and honor <crossref let="q" cid="c58002009.3"/>because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might <crossref let="r" cid="c58002009.4"/>taste death <crossref let="s" cid="c58002009.5"/>for everyone.</verse>

+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="10">For it <crossref let="t" cid="c58002010.1"/>was fitting that he, <crossref let="u" cid="c58002010.2"/>for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons <crossref let="v" cid="c58002010.3"/>to glory, should make the <crossref let="w" cid="c58002010.4"/>founder of their salvation <crossref let="x" cid="c58002010.5"/>perfect through suffering.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58002011"/>
+    <verse num="11">For <crossref let="y" cid="c58002011.1"/>he who sanctifies and <crossref let="z" cid="c58002011.2"/>those who are sanctified <crossref let="a" cid="c58002011.3"/>all have one source.<note nid="n58002011.1"/> That is why he is not ashamed to call them <crossref let="b" cid="c58002011.4"/>brothers,<note nid="n58002011.2"/></verse>

+    <verse num="12">saying,

+      <begin-paragraph class="line-group"/>
+        <begin-line/><crossref let="c" cid="c58002012.1"/><crossref cid="t58002012.1"/><q class="begin-double" qid="58002012.1" from="58002012.1" to="58002012.2"/>I will tell of your name to my brothers;<end-line class="br"/>
+        <begin-line class="indent"/>in the midst of the <crossref let="d" cid="c58002012.2"/>congregation I will sing your praise.<q class="end-double" qid="58002012.2" from="58002012.1" to="58002012.2"/><end-line/>
+    </verse>

+    <end-block-indent/>

+    <begin-paragraph class="same-paragraph"/>
+    <verse num="13">And again,
+      <end-paragraph/>
+      <begin-block-indent/>
+      <begin-paragraph class="line-group"/>

+      <begin-paragraph class="same-paragraph"/>And again,
+      <end-paragraph/>
+      <begin-block-indent/>
+      <begin-paragraph class="line-group"/>

+    <verse num="14">Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise <crossref let="h" cid="c58002014.1"/>partook of the same things, that <crossref let="i" cid="c58002014.2"/>through death he might <crossref let="j" cid="c58002014.3"/>destroy <crossref let="k" cid="c58002014.4"/>the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,</verse>

+    <verse num="15">and deliver all those who <crossref let="l" cid="c58002015.1"/>through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58002016"/>
+    <verse num="16">For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he <crossref let="m" cid="c58002016.1"/>helps the offspring of Abraham.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58002017"/>
+    <verse num="17">Therefore he had <crossref let="n" cid="c58002017.1"/>to be made like his brothers in every respect, <crossref let="o" cid="c58002017.2"/>so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest <crossref let="p" cid="c58002017.3"/>in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.</verse>

+    <verse num="18">For because he himself has suffered <crossref let="q" cid="c58002018.1"/>when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.</verse>

+    <heading>Jesus Greater Than Moses</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="1">Therefore, holy brothers,<note nid="n58003001.1"/> you who share in <crossref let="r" cid="c58003001.1"/>a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, <crossref let="s" cid="c58003001.2"/>the apostle and high priest of our confession,</verse>

+    <verse num="2">who was faithful to him who appointed him, <crossref let="t" cid="c58003002.1"/>just as Moses also was faithful in all God&apos;s<note nid="n58003002.1"/> house.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58003003"/>
+    <verse num="3">For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses&emdash;as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58003004"/>
+    <verse num="4">(For every house is built by someone, but <crossref let="u" cid="c58003004.1"/>the builder of all things is God.)</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58003005"/>
+    <verse num="5"><crossref let="v" cid="c58003005.1"/>Now Moses was faithful in all God&apos;s house <crossref let="w" cid="c58003005.2"/>as a servant, <crossref let="x" cid="c58003005.3"/>to testify to the things that were to be spoken later,</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58003006"/>
+    <verse num="6">but Christ is faithful over God&apos;s house as <crossref let="y" cid="c58003006.1"/>a son. And <crossref let="z" cid="c58003006.2"/>we are his house, if indeed we <crossref let="a" cid="c58003006.3"/>hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.<note nid="n58003006.1"/></verse>

+    <heading>A Rest for the People of God</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="7">Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says,

+    <verse num="8">
+        <begin-line/>do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,<end-line class="br"/>
+        <begin-line class="indent"/>on the day of testing in the wilderness,<end-line class="br"/>
+    </verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58003009"/>
+    <verse num="9">
+        <begin-line/>where your fathers put me to the test<end-line class="br"/>
+        <begin-line class="indent"/>and saw my works for <crossref let="c" cid="c58003009.1"/>forty years.<end-line class="br"/>
+    </verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58003010"/>
+    <verse num="10">
+        <begin-line/>Therefore I was provoked with that generation,<end-line class="br"/>
+        <begin-line/>and said, <q class="begin-single" qid="58003010.1" from="58003010.1" to="58003010.2"/>They always go astray in their heart;<end-line class="br"/>

+    <begin-paragraph class="same-paragraph"/>
+    <verse num="12">Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from <crossref let="e" cid="c58003012.1"/>the living God.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58003013"/>
+    <verse num="13">But <crossref let="f" cid="c58003013.1"/>exhort one another every day, as long as it is called <q class="begin-double" qid="58003013.1" from="58003013.1" to="58003013.2"/>today,<q class="end-double" qid="58003013.2" from="58003013.1" to="58003013.2"/> that none of you may be hardened by <crossref let="g" cid="c58003013.2"/>the deceitfulness of sin.</verse>

+    <verse num="17">And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, <crossref let="k" cid="c58003017.1"/>whose bodies fell in the wilderness?</verse>

+    <verse num="18">And to whom did he swear that <crossref let="l" cid="c58003018.1"/>they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient?</verse>

+    <verse num="19">So we see that <crossref let="m" cid="c58003019.1"/>they were unable to enter because of unbelief.</verse>

+  </chapter>

+    <verse num="1">Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem <crossref let="n" cid="c58004001.1"/>to have failed to reach it.</verse>

+    <verse num="2">For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because <crossref let="o" cid="c58004002.1"/>they were not united by faith with those who listened.<note nid="n58004002.1"/></verse>

+    <verse num="3">For we who have believed enter that rest, as he has said,

+    <heading>Warning Against Apostasy</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="11">About this we have much to say, and it is <crossref let="c" cid="c58005011.1"/>hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.</verse>

+    <verse num="12">For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again <crossref let="d" cid="c58005012.1"/>the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need <crossref let="e" cid="c58005012.2"/>milk, not solid food,</verse>

+    <verse num="13">for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is <crossref let="f" cid="c58005013.1"/>a child.</verse>

+    <verse num="7">For <crossref let="w" cid="c58006007.1"/>land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God.</verse>

+    <verse num="8">But <crossref let="x" cid="c58006008.1"/>if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, <crossref let="y" cid="c58006008.2"/>and its end is to be burned.</verse>

+    <verse num="9">Though we speak in this way, yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things&emdash;things that belong to salvation.</verse>

+    <heading>The Certainty of God&apos;s Promise</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="13">For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, <crossref let="e" cid="c58006013.1"/>he swore by himself,</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58006014"/>

+    <verse num="16">For people swear by something greater than themselves, and in all their disputes <crossref let="h" cid="c58006016.1"/>an oath is final for confirmation.</verse>

+    <verse num="17">So when God desired to show more convincingly to <crossref let="i" cid="c58006017.1"/>the heirs of the promise <crossref let="j" cid="c58006017.2"/>the unchangeable character of his purpose, <crossref let="k" cid="c58006017.3"/>he guaranteed it with an oath,</verse>

+    <verse num="18">so that by two unchangeable things, in which <crossref let="l" cid="c58006018.1"/>it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope <crossref let="m" cid="c58006018.2"/>set before us.</verse>

+    <heading>The Priestly Order of Melchizedek</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="1">For this <crossref let="q" cid="c58007001.1"/>Melchizedek, king of <crossref let="r" cid="c58007001.2"/>Salem, priest of <crossref let="s" cid="c58007001.3"/>the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,</verse>

+    <verse num="2">and to him Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything. He is first, by translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then he is also king of Salem, that is, king of peace.</verse>

+    <verse num="3">He is without father or mother <crossref let="t" cid="c58007003.1"/>or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever.</verse>

+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="4">See how great this man was to whom Abraham <crossref let="u" cid="c58007004.1"/>the patriarch gave a tenth of the spoils!</verse>

+    <verse num="5">And <crossref let="v" cid="c58007005.1"/>those descendants of Levi who receive the priestly office have a commandment in the law to take tithes from the people, that is, from their brothers,<note nid="n58007005.1"/> though these also are descended from Abraham.</verse>

+    <verse num="6">But this man <crossref let="w" cid="c58007006.1"/>who does not have his descent from them received tithes from Abraham and blessed <crossref let="x" cid="c58007006.2"/>him who had the promises.</verse>

+    <verse num="7">It is beyond dispute that the inferior is blessed by the superior.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58007008"/>
+    <verse num="8">In the one case tithes are received by mortal men, but in the other case, by one <crossref let="y" cid="c58007008.1"/>of whom it is testified that <crossref let="z" cid="c58007008.2"/>he lives.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58007009"/>
+    <verse num="9">One might even say that Levi himself, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham,</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58007010"/>
+    <verse num="10">for he was still in the loins of his ancestor when Melchizedek met him.</verse>
+    <end-paragraph/>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58007011"/>
+    <heading>Jesus Compared to Melchizedek</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="11"><crossref let="a" cid="c58007011.1"/>Now if perfection had been attainable through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need would there have been for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek, rather than one named after the order of Aaron?</verse>

+    <verse num="12">For when there is a change in the priesthood, there is necessarily a change in the law as well.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58007013"/>
+    <verse num="13">For the one of whom these things are spoken belonged to another tribe, from which no one has ever served at the altar.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58007014"/>
+    <verse num="14">For it is evident that our Lord was descended <crossref let="b" cid="c58007014.1"/>from Judah, and in connection with that tribe Moses said nothing about priests.</verse>

+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="15">This becomes even more evident when another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek,</verse>

+    <verse num="16">who has become a priest, not on the basis of a legal requirement concerning bodily descent, but by the power of an indestructible life.</verse>

+    <heading>Jesus, High Priest of a Better Covenant</heading>

+    <verse num="1">Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, <crossref let="u" cid="c58008001.1"/>one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven,</verse>

+    <verse num="3">For <crossref let="x" cid="c58008003.1"/>every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; thus <crossref let="y" cid="c58008003.2"/>it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58008004"/>
+    <verse num="4">Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, since there are priests who offer gifts according to the law.</verse>

+    <verse num="5">They serve <crossref let="z" cid="c58008005.1"/>a copy and <crossref let="a" cid="c58008005.2"/>shadow of the heavenly things. +    <verse num="6">But as it is, Christ<note nid="n58008006.1"/> has obtained a ministry that is <crossref let="c" cid="c58008006.1"/>as much more excellent than the old as <crossref let="d" cid="c58008006.2"/>the covenant <crossref let="e" cid="c58008006.3"/>he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises.</verse>

+    <verse num="7"><crossref let="f" cid="c58008007.1"/>For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second.</verse>

+        <begin-line/>not like the covenant that I made with their fathers<end-line class="br"/>
+        <begin-line class="indent"/>on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt.<end-line class="br"/>
+        <begin-line/>For they did not continue in my covenant,<end-line class="br"/>
+        <begin-line class="indent"/>and so I showed no concern for them, declares the Lord.<end-line class="br"/>
+    </verse>

+    <verse num="13">In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And <crossref let="l" cid="c58008013.1"/>what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.</verse>

+    <heading>The Earthly Holy Place</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="1">Now even the first covenant had regulations for worship and <crossref let="m" cid="c58009001.1"/>an earthly place of holiness.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58009002"/>
+    <verse num="2">For <crossref let="n" cid="c58009002.1"/>a tent<note nid="n58009002.1"/> was prepared, the first section, in which were <crossref let="o" cid="c58009002.2"/>the lampstand and <crossref let="p" cid="c58009002.3"/>the table and <crossref let="q" cid="c58009002.4"/>the bread of the Presence.<note nid="n58009002.2"/> It is called the Holy Place.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58009003"/>
+    <verse num="3">Behind <crossref let="r" cid="c58009003.1"/>the second curtain was a second section<note nid="n58009003.1"/> called the Most Holy Place,</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58009004"/>
+    <verse num="4">having the golden <crossref let="s" cid="c58009004.1"/>altar of incense and <crossref let="t" cid="c58009004.2"/>the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was <crossref let="u" cid="c58009004.3"/>a golden urn holding the manna, and <crossref let="v" cid="c58009004.4"/>Aaron&apos;s staff that budded, and <crossref let="w" cid="c58009004.5"/>the tablets of the covenant.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58009005"/>
+    <verse num="5">Above it were <crossref let="x" cid="c58009005.1"/>the cherubim of glory overshadowing <crossref let="y" cid="c58009005.2"/>the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail.</verse>

+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58009006"/>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="6">These preparations having thus been made, <crossref let="z" cid="c58009006.1"/>the priests go regularly into the first section, performing their ritual duties,</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58009007"/>
+    <verse num="7">but into the second only <crossref let="a" cid="c58009007.1"/>the high priest goes, and he but <crossref let="a" cid="c58009007.2"/>once a year, and not without taking blood, <crossref let="b" cid="c58009007.3"/>which he offers for himself and for the unintentional sins of the people.</verse>

+    <verse num="8">By this the Holy Spirit indicates that <crossref let="c" cid="c58009008.1"/>the way into the holy places is not yet opened as long as the first section is still standing</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58009009"/>
+    <verse num="9">(which is symbolic for the present age).<note nid="n58009009.1"/> According to this arrangement, gifts and sacrifices are offered <crossref let="d" cid="c58009009.1"/>that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper,</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58009010"/>
+    <verse num="10">but deal only with <crossref let="e" cid="c58009010.1"/>food and drink and <crossref let="f" cid="c58009010.2"/>various washings, regulations for the body imposed until the time of reformation.</verse>
+    <end-paragraph/>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58009011"/>
+    <heading>Redemption Through the Blood of Christ</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="11">But when Christ appeared as a high priest <crossref let="g" cid="c58009011.1"/>of the good things that have come,<note nid="n58009011.1"/> then through <crossref let="h" cid="c58009011.2"/>the greater and more perfect tent (<crossref let="i" cid="c58009011.3"/>not made with hands, that is, not of this creation)</verse>

+    <verse num="12">he <crossref let="j" cid="c58009012.1"/>entered <crossref let="k" cid="c58009012.2"/>once for all into the holy places, not by means of <crossref let="l" cid="c58009012.3"/>the blood of goats and calves but <crossref let="m" cid="c58009012.4"/>by means of his own blood, <crossref let="n" cid="c58009012.5"/>thus securing an eternal redemption.</verse>

+    <verse num="13">For if <crossref let="o" cid="c58009013.1"/>the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with <crossref let="p" cid="c58009013.2"/>the ashes of a heifer, sanctify<note nid="n58009013.1"/> for the purification of the flesh,</verse>

+    <verse num="14">how much more will <crossref let="q" cid="c58009014.1"/>the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit <crossref let="r" cid="c58009014.2"/>offered himself without blemish to God, <crossref let="s" cid="c58009014.3"/>purify our<note nid="n58009014.1"/> conscience <crossref let="t" cid="c58009014.4"/>from dead works <crossref let="u" cid="c58009014.5"/>to serve the living God.</verse>

+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="15">Therefore he is <crossref let="v" cid="c58009015.1"/>the mediator of a new covenant, so that <crossref let="w" cid="c58009015.2"/>those who are called may <crossref let="x" cid="c58009015.3"/>receive the promised eternal inheritance, <crossref let="y" cid="c58009015.4"/>since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.<note nid="n58009015.1"/></verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58009016"/>
+    <verse num="16">For where a will is involved, the death of the one who made it must be established.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58009017"/>
+    <verse num="17">For <crossref let="z" cid="c58009017.1"/>a will takes effect only at death, since it is not in force as long as the one who made it is alive.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58009018"/>
+    <verse num="18">Therefore not even the first covenant was inaugurated <crossref let="a" cid="c58009018.1"/>without blood.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58009019"/>
+    <verse num="19">For when every commandment of the law had been declared by Moses to all the people, he took <crossref let="b" cid="c58009019.1"/>the blood of calves and goats, <crossref let="c" cid="c58009019.2"/>with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people,</verse>

+    <verse num="20">saying, <crossref let="d" cid="c58009020.1"/><crossref cid="t58009020.1"/><q class="begin-double" qid="58009020.1" from="58009020.1" to="58009020.2"/>This is the blood of the covenant that God commanded for you.<q class="end-double" qid="58009020.2" from="58009020.1" to="58009020.2"/></verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58009021"/>
+    <verse num="21">And in the same way he sprinkled with the blood both <crossref let="e" cid="c58009021.1"/>the tent and all the vessels used in worship.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58009022"/>
+    <verse num="22">Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and <crossref let="f" cid="c58009022.1"/>without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.</verse>

+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58009023"/>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="23">Thus it was necessary for <crossref let="g" cid="c58009023.1"/>the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58009024"/>
+    <verse num="24">For Christ has entered, not into holy places <crossref let="h" cid="c58009024.1"/>made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God <crossref let="i" cid="c58009024.2"/>on our behalf.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58009025"/>
+    <verse num="25">Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as <crossref let="j" cid="c58009025.1"/>the high priest enters <crossref let="k" cid="c58009025.2"/>the holy places every year with blood not his own,</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58009026"/>
+    <verse num="26">for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, <crossref let="l" cid="c58009026.1"/>he has appeared <crossref let="m" cid="c58009026.2"/>once for all <crossref let="n" cid="c58009026.3"/>at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.</verse>

+    <verse num="27">And just as <crossref let="o" cid="c58009027.1"/>it is appointed for man to die once, and <crossref let="p" cid="c58009027.2"/>after that comes judgment,</verse>

+    <verse num="28">so Christ, having been offered once <crossref let="q" cid="c58009028.1"/>to bear the sins of <crossref let="r" cid="c58009028.2"/>many, will appear <crossref let="s" cid="c58009028.3"/>a second time, <crossref let="t" cid="c58009028.4"/>not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly <crossref let="u" cid="c58009028.5"/>waiting for him.</verse>

+    <heading>Christ&apos;s Sacrifice Once for All</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="1">For since the law has but <crossref let="v" cid="c58010001.1"/>a shadow <crossref let="w" cid="c58010001.2"/>of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, <crossref let="x" cid="c58010001.3"/>it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58010002"/>
+    <verse num="2">Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins?</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58010003"/>
+    <verse num="3">But <crossref let="y" cid="c58010003.1"/>in these sacrifices <crossref let="z" cid="c58010003.2"/>there is a reminder of sins every year.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58010004"/>
+    <verse num="4">For <crossref let="a" cid="c58010004.1"/>it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.</verse>

+    <verse num="5">Consequently, <crossref let="b" cid="c58010005.1"/>when Christ<note nid="n58010005.1"/> came into the world, he said,

+        <begin-line class="indent"/>but a body have you prepared for me;<end-line class="br"/>
+    </verse>

+        <begin-line/>in burnt offerings and sin offerings<end-line class="br"/>
+        <begin-line class="indent"/>you have taken no pleasure.<end-line class="br"/>
+    </verse>

+    <verse num="8">When he said above, <q class="begin-double" qid="58010008.1" from="58010008.1" to="58010008.2"/>You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in <crossref let="c" cid="c58010008.1"/>sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings<q class="end-double" qid="58010008.2" from="58010008.1" to="58010008.2"/> (these are offered according to the law),</verse>

+    <verse num="10">And by that will <crossref let="e" cid="c58010010.1"/>we have been sanctified through the offering of <crossref let="f" cid="c58010010.2"/>the body of Jesus Christ <crossref let="g" cid="c58010010.3"/>once for all.</verse>

+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="11">And every priest stands <crossref let="h" cid="c58010011.1"/>daily at his service, <crossref let="i" cid="c58010011.2"/>offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, <crossref let="j" cid="c58010011.3"/>which can never take away sins.</verse>

+    <verse num="12">But when Christ<note nid="n58010012.1"/> had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he <crossref let="k" cid="c58010012.1"/>sat down at the right hand of God,</verse>

+    <verse num="13">waiting from that time <crossref let="l" cid="c58010013.1"/>until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet.</verse>

+    <verse num="14">For by a single offering <crossref let="m" cid="c58010014.1"/>he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.</verse>

+    <verse num="15">And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying,</verse>

+    </verse>

+    <verse num="18">Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.</verse>
+    <end-paragraph/>

+    <heading>The Full Assurance of Faith</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="19"><crossref let="p" cid="c58010019.1"/>Therefore, brothers,<note nid="n58010019.1"/> since we have confidence to enter <crossref let="q" cid="c58010019.2"/>the holy places by the blood of Jesus,</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58010020"/>
+    <verse num="20">by <crossref let="r" cid="c58010020.1"/>the new and living way that he opened for us through <crossref let="s" cid="c58010020.2"/>the curtain, that is, through his flesh,</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58010021"/>
+    <verse num="21">and since we have <crossref let="t" cid="c58010021.1"/>a great priest over the house of God,</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58010022"/>
+    <verse num="22">let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts <crossref let="u" cid="c58010022.1"/>sprinkled clean <crossref let="v" cid="c58010022.2"/>from an evil conscience and our bodies <crossref let="w" cid="c58010022.3"/>washed with pure water.</verse>

+    <verse num="23"><crossref let="x" cid="c58010023.1"/>Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for <crossref let="y" cid="c58010023.2"/>he who promised is faithful.</verse>

+    <verse num="24">And <crossref let="z" cid="c58010024.1"/>let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,</verse>

+    <verse num="25"><crossref let="a" cid="c58010025.1"/>not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and <crossref let="b" cid="c58010025.2"/>all the more as you see <crossref let="c" cid="c58010025.3"/>the Day drawing near.</verse>

+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="26">For <crossref let="d" cid="c58010026.1"/>if we go on sinning deliberately <crossref let="e" cid="c58010026.2"/>after receiving the knowledge of the truth, <crossref let="f" cid="c58010026.3"/>there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,</verse>

+    <verse num="27"><crossref let="g" cid="c58010027.1"/>but a fearful expectation of judgment, and <crossref let="h" cid="c58010027.2"/>a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58010028"/>
+    <verse num="28"><crossref let="i" cid="c58010028.1"/>Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy <crossref let="j" cid="c58010028.2"/>on the evidence of two or three witnesses.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58010029"/>

+    <verse num="8">If you are left without discipline, <crossref let="j" cid="c58012008.1"/>in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v58012009"/>
+    <verse num="9">Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to <crossref let="k" cid="c58012009.1"/>the Father of spirits <crossref let="l" cid="c58012009.2"/>and live?</verse>

+    <verse num="10">For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, <crossref let="m" cid="c58012010.1"/>that we may share his holiness.</verse>

+    <verse num="17">For you know that <crossref let="y" cid="c58012017.1"/>afterward, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no chance to repent, though he sought it with tears.</verse>

+    <heading>A Kingdom That Cannot Be Shaken</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="18">For you have not come to <crossref let="z" cid="c58012018.1"/>what may be touched, a blazing fire and darkness and gloom and a tempest</verse>
