+    <heading>Qualifications for Elders</heading>

+    <verse num="5"><crossref let="o" cid="c56001005.1"/>This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and <crossref let="p" cid="c56001005.2"/>appoint elders in every town as I directed you&emdash;</verse>

+    <verse num="11">They must be silenced, since <crossref let="a" cid="c56001011.1"/>they are upsetting whole families by teaching <crossref let="b" cid="c56001011.2"/>for shameful gain what they ought not to teach.</verse>

+    <verse num="12"><crossref let="c" cid="c56001012.1"/>One of the Cretans,<note nid="n56001012.1"/> a prophet of their own, said, <q class="begin-double" qid="56001012.1" from="56001012.1" to="56001012.2"/>Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.<q class="end-double" qid="56001012.2" from="56001012.1" to="56001012.2"/><note nid="n56001012.2"/></verse>

+    <verse num="13">This testimony is true. Therefore <crossref let="d" cid="c56001013.1"/>rebuke them <crossref let="e" cid="c56001013.2"/>sharply, that they <crossref let="f" cid="c56001013.3"/>may be sound in the faith,</verse>

+    <verse num="14"><crossref let="g" cid="c56001014.1"/>not devoting themselves to Jewish myths and <crossref let="h" cid="c56001014.2"/>the commands of people <crossref let="i" cid="c56001014.3"/>who turn away from the truth.</verse>

+    <verse num="15"><crossref let="j" cid="c56001015.1"/>To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and <crossref let="k" cid="c56001015.2"/>unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both <crossref let="l" cid="c56001015.3"/>their minds and their consciences are defiled.</verse>

+    <heading>Teach Sound Doctrine</heading>

+    <verse num="1">But as for you, teach what accords with <crossref let="p" cid="c56002001.1"/>sound<note nid="n56002001.1"/> doctrine.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v56002002"/>
+    <verse num="2">Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, <crossref let="p" cid="c56002002.1"/>sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v56002003"/>
+    <verse num="3"><crossref let="q" cid="c56002003.1"/>Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, <crossref let="r" cid="c56002003.2"/>not slanderers <crossref let="s" cid="c56002003.3"/>or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good,</verse>

+    <verse num="4">and so train the young women to love their husbands and children,</verse>

+    <verse num="9"><crossref let="d" cid="c56002009.1"/>Bondservants<note nid="n56002009.1"/> are to be submissive to their own masters <crossref let="e" cid="c56002009.2"/>in everything; they are to be well-pleasing, not argumentative,</verse>

+    <heading>Be Ready for Every Good Work</heading>

+    <verse num="1">Remind them <crossref let="x" cid="c56003001.1"/>to be submissive to rulers and authorities, <crossref let="y" cid="c56003001.2"/>to be obedient, to be ready for every good work,</verse>

+    <verse num="2"><crossref let="z" cid="c56003002.1"/>to speak evil of no one, <crossref let="a" cid="c56003002.2"/>to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and <crossref let="b" cid="c56003002.3"/>to show perfect courtesy toward all people.</verse>

+    <verse num="3">For <crossref let="c" cid="c56003003.1"/>we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another.</verse>

+    <verse num="4">But when <crossref let="d" cid="c56003004.1"/>the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared,</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v56003005"/>
+    <verse num="5">he saved us, <crossref let="e" cid="c56003005.1"/>not because of works done by us in righteousness, but <crossref let="f" cid="c56003005.2"/>according to his own mercy, by <crossref let="g" cid="c56003005.3"/>the washing of regeneration and <crossref let="h" cid="c56003005.4"/>renewal of the Holy Spirit,</verse>

+    <verse num="8">The saying is <crossref let="m" cid="c56003008.1"/>trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful <crossref let="n" cid="c56003008.2"/>to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people.</verse>

+    <verse num="9">But <crossref let="o" cid="c56003009.1"/>avoid foolish <crossref let="p" cid="c56003009.2"/>controversies, <crossref let="q" cid="c56003009.3"/>genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for <crossref let="r" cid="c56003009.4"/>they are unprofitable and worthless.</verse>

+    <verse num="10">As for a person who stirs up division, <crossref let="s" cid="c56003010.1"/>after warning him once and then twice, <crossref let="t" cid="c56003010.2"/>have nothing more to do with him,</verse>

+    <verse num="11">knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.</verse>

+    <heading>Final Instructions and Greetings</heading>

+    <verse num="12">When I send Artemas or <crossref let="u" cid="c56003012.1"/>Tychicus to you, do your best to come to me <crossref let="v" cid="c56003012.2"/>at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there.</verse>

+    <verse num="13">Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and <crossref let="w" cid="c56003013.1"/>Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing.</verse>
