+    <heading>The Thessalonians&apos; Faith and Example</heading>

+    <heading>Paul&apos;s Ministry to the Thessalonians</heading>

+    <verse num="1">For you yourselves know, brothers,<note nid="n52002001.1"/> that our <crossref let="f" cid="c52002001.1"/>coming to you <crossref let="g" cid="c52002001.2"/>was not in vain.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v52002002"/>
+    <verse num="2">But though we had already suffered and been shamefully treated <crossref let="h" cid="c52002002.1"/>at Philippi, as you know, <crossref let="i" cid="c52002002.2"/>we had boldness in our God <crossref let="j" cid="c52002002.3"/>to declare to you the gospel of God in the midst of much <crossref let="k" cid="c52002002.4"/>conflict.</verse>

+    <verse num="3">For <crossref let="l" cid="c52002003.1"/>our appeal does not spring from <crossref let="m" cid="c52002003.2"/>error or <crossref let="n" cid="c52002003.3"/>impurity or <crossref let="o" cid="c52002003.4"/>any attempt to deceive,</verse>

For <crossref let="p" cid="c52002014.3"/>you suffered the same things from your own countrymen <crossref let="q" cid="c52002014.4"/>as they did from the Jews,<note nid="n52002014.1"/></verse>

+    <verse num="16"><crossref let="u" cid="c52002016.1"/>by hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles that they might be saved&emdash;so as always <crossref let="v" cid="c52002016.2"/>to fill up the measure of their sins. +    <heading>Paul&apos;s Longing to See Them Again</heading>

+    <verse num="17">But since we were torn away from you, brothers, for a short time, <crossref let="x" cid="c52002017.1"/>in person not in heart, we endeavored the more eagerly and with great desire <crossref let="y" cid="c52002017.2"/>to see you face to face,</verse>

+    <verse num="18">because we wanted to come to you&emdash;I, Paul, again and again&emdash;but Satan <crossref let="z" cid="c52002018.1"/>hindered us.</verse>

+    <verse num="19">For what is our hope or <crossref let="a" cid="c52002019.1"/>joy or crown of boasting <crossref let="b" cid="c52002019.2"/>before our Lord Jesus at his <crossref let="c" cid="c52002019.3"/>coming? Is it not you?</verse>

+    <verse num="20">For you are our glory and joy.</verse>

+    <verse num="1">Therefore when we could bear it no longer, we were willing <crossref let="d" cid="c52003001.1"/>to be left behind at Athens alone,</verse>

+    <verse num="2">and we <crossref let="e" cid="c52003002.1"/>sent Timothy, <crossref let="f" cid="c52003002.2"/>our brother and God&apos;s coworker<note nid="n52003002.1"/> in the gospel of Christ, to establish and exhort you in your faith,</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v52003003"/>
+    <verse num="3">that no one be moved by these afflictions. For you yourselves know that <crossref let="g" cid="c52003003.1"/>we are destined for this.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v52003004"/>
+    <verse num="4">For when we were with you, we kept telling you beforehand that we were to suffer affliction, <crossref let="h" cid="c52003004.1"/>just as it has come to pass, and just as you know.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v52003005"/>
+    <verse num="5">For this reason, <crossref let="i" cid="c52003005.1"/>when I could bear it no longer, <crossref let="i" cid="c52003005.2"/>I sent to learn about your faith, <crossref let="j" cid="c52003005.3"/>for fear that somehow <crossref let="k" cid="c52003005.4"/>the tempter had tempted you and <crossref let="l" cid="c52003005.5"/>our labor would be in vain.</verse>

+    <heading>Timothy&apos;s Encouraging Report</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="6">But <crossref let="m" cid="c52003006.1"/>now that Timothy has come to us from you, and has brought us the good news of <crossref let="n" cid="c52003006.2"/>your faith and love and reported <crossref let="o" cid="c52003006.3"/>that you always remember us kindly and <crossref let="p" cid="c52003006.4"/>long to see us, as we long to see you&emdash;</verse>

+    <verse num="7">for this reason, brothers,<note nid="n52003007.1"/> in all our distress and affliction <crossref let="q" cid="c52003007.1"/>we have been comforted about you through your faith.</verse>

+    <verse num="8">For now we live, if you <crossref let="r" cid="c52003008.1"/>are standing fast in the Lord.</verse>

+    <verse num="9">For <crossref let="s" cid="c52003009.1"/>what thanksgiving can we return to God for you, for all the joy that we feel for your sake before our God,</verse>

+    <verse num="10">as we pray most earnestly <crossref let="t" cid="c52003010.1"/>night and day <crossref let="u" cid="c52003010.2"/>that we may see you face to face and <crossref let="v" cid="c52003010.3"/>supply what is lacking in your faith?</verse>

+    <heading>A Life Pleasing to God</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="1">Finally, then, brothers,<note nid="n52004001.1"/> we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you <crossref let="d" cid="c52004001.1"/>received from us <crossref let="e" cid="c52004001.2"/>how you ought to walk and <crossref let="f" cid="c52004001.3"/>to please God, just as you are doing, that you <crossref let="g" cid="c52004001.4"/>do so more and more.</verse>

+    <verse num="2">For <crossref let="h" cid="c52004002.1"/>you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus.</verse>

+    <verse num="3">For this is the will of God, <crossref let="i" cid="c52004003.1"/>your sanctification:<note nid="n52004003.1"/> <crossref let="j" cid="c52004003.2"/>that you abstain from sexual immorality;</verse>

+    <verse num="4">that each one of you know how to control his own <crossref let="k" cid="c52004004.1"/>body<note nid="n52004004.1"/> in holiness and <crossref let="l" cid="c52004004.2"/>honor,</verse>

+    <verse num="6">that no one transgress and <crossref let="p" cid="c52004006.1"/>wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is <crossref let="q" cid="c52004006.2"/>an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you.</verse>

+    <verse num="7">For <crossref let="r" cid="c52004007.1"/>God has not called us for <crossref let="s" cid="c52004007.2"/>impurity, but in holiness.</verse>

+    <verse num="8">Therefore <crossref let="t" cid="c52004008.1"/>whoever disregards this, disregards not man but God, <crossref let="u" cid="c52004008.2"/>who gives his Holy Spirit to you.</verse>

+    <verse num="11">and to aspire <crossref let="b" cid="c52004011.1"/>to live quietly, and <crossref let="c" cid="c52004011.2"/>to mind your own affairs, and <crossref let="d" cid="c52004011.3"/>to work with your hands, as we instructed you,</verse>

+    <heading>The Coming of the Lord</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="13">But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, <crossref let="g" cid="c52004013.1"/>that you may not grieve as others do <crossref let="h" cid="c52004013.2"/>who have no hope.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v52004014"/>
+    <verse num="14">For <crossref let="i" cid="c52004014.1"/>since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him <crossref let="j" cid="c52004014.2"/>those who have fallen asleep.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v52004015"/>
+    <verse num="15">For this we declare to you <crossref let="k" cid="c52004015.1"/>by a word from the Lord,<note nid="n52004015.1"/> that <crossref let="l" cid="c52004015.2"/>we who are alive, who are left until <crossref let="m" cid="c52004015.3"/>the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep.</verse>

+    <verse num="16">For <crossref let="n" cid="c52004016.1"/>the Lord himself will descend <crossref let="o" cid="c52004016.2"/>from heaven <crossref let="p" cid="c52004016.3"/>with a cry of command, with the voice of <crossref let="q" cid="c52004016.4"/>an archangel, and <crossref let="r" cid="c52004016.5"/>with the sound of the trumpet of God. And <crossref let="s" cid="c52004016.6"/>the dead in Christ will rise first.</verse>

+    <verse num="17">Then we who are alive, who are left, will be <crossref let="t" cid="c52004017.1"/>caught up together with them <crossref let="u" cid="c52004017.2"/>in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so <crossref let="v" cid="c52004017.3"/>we will always be with the Lord.</verse>

+    <verse num="18">Therefore encourage one another with these words.</verse>

+  </chapter>

+  <chapter num="5">
+    <heading>The Day of the Lord</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="1">Now concerning <crossref let="w" cid="c52005001.1"/>the times and the seasons, brothers,<note nid="n52005001.1"/> <crossref let="x" cid="c52005001.2"/>you have no need to have anything written to you.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v52005002"/>
+    <verse num="2">For you yourselves are fully aware that <crossref let="y" cid="c52005002.1"/>the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v52005003"/>
+    <verse num="3">While people are saying, <q class="begin-double" qid="52005003.1" from="52005003.1" to="52005003.2"/>There is peace and security,<q class="end-double" qid="52005003.2" from="52005003.1" to="52005003.2"/> then <crossref let="z" cid="c52005003.1"/>sudden destruction will come upon them <crossref let="a" cid="c52005003.2"/>as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v52005004"/>
+    <verse num="4">But you <crossref let="b" cid="c52005004.1"/>are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v52005005"/>
+    <verse num="5">For you are all <crossref let="c" cid="c52005005.1"/>children<note nid="n52005005.1"/> of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v52005006"/>
+    <verse num="6">So then <crossref let="d" cid="c52005006.1"/>let us not sleep, as others do, but let us <crossref let="e" cid="c52005006.2"/>keep awake and <crossref let="f" cid="c52005006.3"/>be sober.</verse>

+    <verse num="7">For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, <crossref let="g" cid="c52005007.1"/>are drunk at night.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v52005008"/>
+    <verse num="8">But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, <crossref let="h" cid="c52005008.1"/>having put on the breastplate of <crossref let="i" cid="c52005008.2"/>faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation.</verse>

+    <verse num="9">For God has not destined us for <crossref let="j" cid="c52005009.1"/>wrath, but <crossref let="k" cid="c52005009.2"/>to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,</verse>

+    <heading>Final Instructions and Benediction</heading>

+    <verse num="12">We ask you, brothers, <crossref let="m" cid="c52005012.1"/>to respect those who labor among you and <crossref let="n" cid="c52005012.2"/>are over you in the Lord and admonish you,</verse>
