+    <heading>Born Again to a Living Hope</heading>

+    <verse num="3"><crossref let="g" cid="c60001003.1"/>Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! <crossref let="h" cid="c60001003.2"/>According to his great mercy, <crossref let="i" cid="c60001003.3"/>he has caused us to be born again to a living hope <crossref let="j" cid="c60001003.4"/>through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,</verse>

+    <verse num="10">Concerning this salvation, <crossref let="x" cid="c60001010.1"/>the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully,</verse>

+    <verse num="11">inquiring <crossref let="y" cid="c60001011.1"/>what person or time<note nid="n60001011.1"/> <crossref let="z" cid="c60001011.2"/>the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating <crossref let="a" cid="c60001011.3"/>when he predicted <crossref let="b" cid="c60001011.4"/>the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories.</verse>

+    <verse num="12"><crossref let="c" cid="c60001012.1"/>It was revealed to them that <crossref let="d" cid="c60001012.2"/>they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you <crossref let="e" cid="c60001012.3"/>by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, <crossref let="f" cid="c60001012.4"/>things into which angels long to look.</verse>

+    <heading>Called to Be Holy</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="13">Therefore, <crossref let="g" cid="c60001013.1"/>preparing your minds for action,<note nid="n60001013.1"/> and <crossref let="h" cid="c60001013.2"/>being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.</verse>

+    <verse num="14">As obedient children, <crossref let="i" cid="c60001014.1"/>do not be conformed to the passions <crossref let="j" cid="c60001014.2"/>of your former ignorance,</verse>

+        <begin-line/>The grass withers,<end-line class="br"/>
+        <begin-line class="indent"/>and the flower falls,<end-line class="br"/>
+    </verse>

+    <heading>A Living Stone and a Holy People</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="1"><crossref let="j" cid="c60002001.1"/>So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v60002002"/>
+    <verse num="2"><crossref let="k" cid="c60002002.1"/>Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual <crossref let="l" cid="c60002002.2"/>milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation&emdash;</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v60002003"/>
+    <verse num="3">if indeed you have <crossref let="m" cid="c60002003.1"/>tasted that the Lord is good.</verse>
+    <end-paragraph/>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v60002004"/>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="4">As you come to him, a living stone <crossref let="n" cid="c60002004.1"/>rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious,</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v60002005"/>
+    <verse num="5"><crossref let="o" cid="c60002005.1"/>you yourselves like living stones are being built up as <crossref let="p" cid="c60002005.2"/>a spiritual house, to be <crossref let="q" cid="c60002005.3"/>a holy priesthood, <crossref let="r" cid="c60002005.4"/>to offer spiritual sacrifices <crossref let="s" cid="c60002005.5"/>acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.</verse>

+    <verse num="6">For it stands in Scripture:

+        <begin-line/><crossref let="t" cid="c60002006.1"/><crossref cid="t60002006.1"/><q class="begin-double" qid="60002006.1" from="60002006.1" to="60002006.2"/>Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,<end-line class="br"/>
+        <begin-line class="indent"/>a cornerstone chosen and precious,<end-line class="br"/>
+        <begin-line/><crossref let="u" cid="c60002006.2"/>and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.<q class="end-double" qid="60002006.2" from="60002006.1" to="60002006.2"/><end-line/>

+        <begin-line class="indent"/>has become the cornerstone,<q class="end-double" qid="60002007.2" from="60002007.1" to="60002007.2"/><note nid="n60002007.1"/><end-line/>
+    </verse>
+    <end-paragraph/>
+    <end-block-indent/>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v60002008"/>
+    <begin-paragraph class="same-paragraph"/>
+    <verse num="8">and
+      <end-paragraph/>
+      <begin-block-indent/>
+      <begin-paragraph class="line-group"/>
+        <begin-line/><crossref let="x" cid="c60002008.1"/><crossref cid="t60002008.1"/><q class="begin-double" qid="60002008.1" from="60002008.1" to="60002008.2"/>A stone of stumbling,<end-line class="br"/>
+        <begin-line class="indent"/>and a rock of offense.<q class="end-double" qid="60002008.2" from="60002008.1" to="60002008.2"/><end-line/>
+      <end-paragraph/>
+      <end-block-indent/>
+      <begin-paragraph class="same-paragraph"/>They stumble because they disobey the word, <crossref let="y" cid="c60002008.2"/>as they were destined to do.
+    </verse>
+    <end-paragraph/>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v60002009"/>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="9">But you are <crossref let="z" cid="c60002009.1"/>a chosen race, <crossref let="a" cid="c60002009.2"/>a royal <crossref let="b" cid="c60002009.3"/>priesthood, <crossref let="c" cid="c60002009.4"/>a holy nation, <crossref let="d" cid="c60002009.5"/>a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you <crossref let="e" cid="c60002009.6"/>out of darkness into <crossref let="f" cid="c60002009.7"/>his marvelous light.</verse>

+    <verse num="10"><crossref let="g" cid="c60002010.1"/>Once you were not a people, but now you are God&apos;s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.</verse>

+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="11">Beloved, I urge you <crossref let="h" cid="c60002011.1"/>as sojourners and exiles <crossref let="i" cid="c60002011.2"/>to abstain from the passions of the flesh, <crossref let="j" cid="c60002011.3"/>which wage war against your soul.</verse>

+    <verse num="12"><crossref let="k" cid="c60002012.1"/>Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, <crossref let="l" cid="c60002012.2"/>they may see your good deeds and glorify God on <crossref let="m" cid="c60002012.3"/>the day of visitation.</verse>

+    <heading>Submission to Authority</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="13"><crossref let="n" cid="c60002013.1"/>Be subject for the Lord&apos;s sake to every human institution,<note nid="n60002013.1"/> whether it be to the emperor<note nid="n60002013.2"/> as supreme,</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v60002014"/>
+    <verse num="14">or to governors as sent by him <crossref let="o" cid="c60002014.1"/>to punish those who do evil and <crossref let="p" cid="c60002014.2"/>to praise those who do good.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v60002015"/>
+    <verse num="15">For this is the will of God, <crossref let="q" cid="c60002015.1"/>that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people.</verse>

+    <verse num="16"><crossref let="r" cid="c60002016.1"/>Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but <crossref let="s" cid="c60002016.2"/>living as servants<note nid="n60002016.1"/> of God.</verse>

+    <verse num="17"><crossref let="t" cid="c60002017.1"/>Honor everyone. <crossref let="u" cid="c60002017.2"/>Love the brotherhood. <crossref let="v" cid="c60002017.3"/>Fear God. Honor the emperor.</verse>

+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="18"><crossref let="w" cid="c60002018.1"/>Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust.</verse>

+    <verse num="19">For this is a gracious thing, when, <crossref let="x" cid="c60002019.1"/>mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly.</verse>

+    <verse num="20">For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But <crossref let="y" cid="c60002020.1"/>if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God.</verse>

+    <verse num="21">For <crossref let="z" cid="c60002021.1"/>to this you have been called, <crossref let="y" cid="c60002021.2"/>because Christ also suffered for you, <crossref let="a" cid="c60002021.3"/>leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.</verse>

+    <verse num="22"><crossref let="b" cid="c60002022.1"/>He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth.</verse>

+    <verse num="23"><crossref let="c" cid="c60002023.1"/>When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, <crossref let="d" cid="c60002023.2"/>but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.</verse>

+    <heading>Wives and Husbands</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="1">Likewise, wives, <crossref let="k" cid="c60003001.1"/>be subject to your own husbands, so that <crossref let="l" cid="c60003001.2"/>even if some do not obey the word, <crossref let="m" cid="c60003001.3"/>they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives,</verse>

+    <verse num="2">when they see your <crossref let="n" cid="c60003002.1"/>respectful and pure conduct.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v60003003"/>
+    <verse num="3"><crossref let="o" cid="c60003003.1"/>Do not let your adorning be external&emdash;the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear&emdash;</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v60003004"/>
+    <verse num="4">but let your adorning be <crossref let="p" cid="c60003004.1"/>the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God&apos;s sight is very precious.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v60003005"/>
+    <verse num="5">For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands,</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v60003006"/>
+    <verse num="6">as Sarah obeyed Abraham, <crossref let="q" cid="c60003006.1"/>calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and <crossref let="r" cid="c60003006.2"/>do not fear anything that is frightening.</verse>

+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v60003007"/>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="7">Likewise, <crossref let="s" cid="c60003007.1"/>husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker <crossref let="t" cid="c60003007.2"/>vessel, since they are heirs with you<note nid="n60003007.1"/> of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.</verse>

+    <heading>Suffering for Righteousness&apos; Sake</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="8">Finally, all of you, <crossref let="u" cid="c60003008.1"/>have unity of mind, sympathy, <crossref let="v" cid="c60003008.2"/>brotherly love, <crossref let="w" cid="c60003008.3"/>a tender heart, and <crossref let="x" cid="c60003008.4"/>a humble mind.</verse>

+        <begin-line class="indent"/>and his lips from speaking deceit;<end-line class="br"/>

+        <begin-line/>let him turn away from evil and do good;<end-line class="br"/>
+        <begin-line class="indent"/>let him seek peace and pursue it.<end-line class="br"/>

+        <begin-line/>For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,<end-line class="br"/>
+        <begin-line class="indent"/>and his ears are open to their prayer.<end-line class="br"/>
+        <begin-line/>But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.<q class="end-double" qid="60003012.1" from="60003010.1" to="60003012.1"/><end-line/>

+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="13">Now <crossref let="c" cid="c60003013.1"/>who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good?</verse>

+    <verse num="14"><crossref let="d" cid="c60003014.1"/>But even if you should suffer for righteousness&apos; sake, you will be blessed. <crossref let="e" cid="c60003014.2"/>Have no fear of them, <crossref let="f" cid="c60003014.3"/>nor be troubled,</verse>

+    <heading>Stewards of God&apos;s Grace</heading>
