+    <heading>No Other Gospel</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="6">I am astonished that you are <crossref let="l" cid="c48001006.1"/>so quickly deserting <crossref let="m" cid="c48001006.2"/>him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to <crossref let="n" cid="c48001006.3"/>a different gospel&emdash;</verse>

+    <verse num="7"><crossref let="o" cid="c48001007.1"/>not that there is another one, but <crossref let="p" cid="c48001007.2"/>there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ.</verse>

+    <verse num="8">But even if we or <crossref let="q" cid="c48001008.1"/>an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, <crossref let="r" cid="c48001008.2"/>let him be accursed.</verse>

+    <verse num="9">As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, <crossref let="r" cid="c48001009.1"/>let him be accursed.</verse>

+    <heading>Paul Called by God</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="11">For <crossref let="u" cid="c48001011.1"/>I would have you know, brothers, that <crossref let="v" cid="c48001011.2"/>the gospel that was preached by me is not man&apos;s gospel.<note nid="n48001011.1"/></verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48001012"/>
+    <verse num="12"><crossref let="w" cid="c48001012.1"/>For I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it, but I received it <crossref let="x" cid="c48001012.2"/>through a revelation of Jesus Christ.</verse>

+    <verse num="13">For you have heard of <crossref let="y" cid="c48001013.1"/>my former life in Judaism, how <crossref let="z" cid="c48001013.2"/>I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it.</verse>

+    <verse num="14">And I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely <crossref let="a" cid="c48001014.1"/>zealous was I for <crossref let="b" cid="c48001014.2"/>the traditions of my fathers.</verse>

+    <verse num="15">But when he <crossref let="c" cid="c48001015.1"/>who had set me apart <crossref let="d" cid="c48001015.2"/>before I was born,<note nid="n48001015.1"/> and who <crossref let="e" cid="c48001015.3"/>called me by his grace,</verse>

+    <verse num="16">was pleased to reveal his Son to<note nid="n48001016.1"/> me, in order <crossref let="f" cid="c48001016.1"/>that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with anyone;<note nid="n48001016.2"/></verse>

+    <verse num="17">nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia, and returned again to Damascus.</verse>

+    <verse num="18">Then <crossref let="g" cid="c48001018.1"/>after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas and remained with him fifteen days.</verse>

+    <verse num="19">But I saw none of the other apostles except James <crossref let="h" cid="c48001019.1"/>the Lord&apos;s brother.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48001020"/>
+    <verse num="20">(In what I am writing to you, <crossref let="i" cid="c48001020.1"/>before God, I do not lie!)</verse>

+    <verse num="21"><crossref let="j" cid="c48001021.1"/>Then I went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia.</verse>

+    <verse num="22">And I was still unknown in person to <crossref let="k" cid="c48001022.1"/>the churches of Judea that are in Christ.</verse>

+    <heading>Paul Accepted by the Apostles</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="1">Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along with me.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48002002"/>
+    <verse num="2">I went up because of a revelation and set before them (though privately before those <crossref let="l" cid="c48002002.1"/>who seemed influential) the gospel that <crossref let="m" cid="c48002002.2"/>I proclaim among the Gentiles, <crossref let="n" cid="c48002002.3"/>in order to make sure I was not running or had not <crossref let="o" cid="c48002002.4"/>run in vain.</verse>

+    <verse num="3">But even Titus, who was with me, <crossref let="p" cid="c48002003.1"/>was not forced to be circumcised, though he was a Greek.</verse>

+    <verse num="4"><crossref let="q" cid="c48002004.1"/>Yet because of false brothers secretly brought in&emdash;who <crossref let="r" cid="c48002004.2"/>slipped in to spy out <crossref let="s" cid="c48002004.3"/>our freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, <crossref let="t" cid="c48002004.4"/>so that they might bring us into slavery&emdash;</verse>

+    <verse num="5">to them we did not yield in submission even for a moment, so that <crossref let="u" cid="c48002005.1"/>the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you.</verse>

+    <verse num="6">And from those <crossref let="v" cid="c48002006.1"/>who seemed to be influential (what they were makes no difference to me; <crossref let="w" cid="c48002006.2"/>God shows no partiality)&emdash;those, I say, who seemed influential <crossref let="x" cid="c48002006.3"/>added nothing to me.</verse>

+    <verse num="7">On the contrary, when they saw that I had been <crossref let="y" cid="c48002007.1"/>entrusted with <crossref let="z" cid="c48002007.2"/>the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been entrusted with the gospel to the circumcised</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48002008"/>
+    <verse num="8">(for he who worked through Peter for his apostolic ministry to the circumcised worked also through me for mine to the Gentiles),</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48002009"/>
+    <verse num="9">and when James and Cephas and John, <crossref let="v" cid="c48002009.1"/>who seemed to be <crossref let="a" cid="c48002009.2"/>pillars, perceived the <crossref let="b" cid="c48002009.3"/>grace that was given to me, they <crossref let="c" cid="c48002009.4"/>gave the right hand of fellowship to Barnabas and me, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.</verse>

+    <verse num="10">Only, they asked us to remember the poor, <crossref let="d" cid="c48002010.1"/>the very thing I was eager to do.</verse>
+    <end-paragraph/>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48002011"/>
+    <heading>Paul Opposes Peter</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="11">But <crossref let="e" cid="c48002011.1"/>when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him <crossref let="f" cid="c48002011.2"/>to his face, because he stood condemned.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48002012"/>
+    <verse num="12">For before certain men came from James, <crossref let="g" cid="c48002012.1"/>he was eating with the Gentiles; but when they came he drew back and separated himself, fearing <crossref let="h" cid="c48002012.2"/>the circumcision party.<note nid="n48002012.1"/></verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48002013"/>
+    <verse num="13">And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48002014"/>
+    <verse num="14">But when I saw that their <crossref let="i" cid="c48002014.1"/>conduct was not in step with <crossref let="j" cid="c48002014.2"/>the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas <crossref let="k" cid="c48002014.3"/>before them all, <q class="begin-double" qid="48002014.1" from="48002014.1" to="48002014.2"/>If you, though a Jew, <crossref let="l" cid="c48002014.4"/>live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews?<q class="end-double" qid="48002014.2" from="48002014.1" to="48002014.2"/></verse>
+    <end-paragraph/>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48002015"/>
+    <heading>Justified by Faith</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph class="same-paragraph"/>
+    <verse num="15">We ourselves are Jews by birth and not <crossref let="m" cid="c48002015.1"/>Gentile sinners;</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48002016"/>
+    <verse num="16">yet we know that <crossref let="n" cid="c48002016.1"/>a person is not justified<note nid="n48002016.1"/> by works of the law <crossref let="o" cid="c48002016.2"/>but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, <crossref let="p" cid="c48002016.3"/>because by works of the law no one will be justified.</verse>
+    <end-paragraph/>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48002017"/>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="17">But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we too were found <crossref let="q" cid="c48002017.1"/>to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not!</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48002018"/>
+    <verse num="18">For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove myself to be a transgressor.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48002019"/>
+    <verse num="19">For through the law I <crossref let="r" cid="c48002019.1"/>died to the law, so that I might <crossref let="s" cid="c48002019.2"/>live to God.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48002020"/>
+    <verse num="20">I have been <crossref let="t" cid="c48002020.1"/>crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives <crossref let="u" cid="c48002020.2"/>in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, <crossref let="v" cid="c48002020.3"/>who loved me and <crossref let="w" cid="c48002020.4"/>gave himself for me.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48002021"/>
+    <verse num="21">I do not nullify the grace of God, for <crossref let="x" cid="c48002021.1"/>if righteousness<note nid="n48002021.1"/> were through the law, <crossref let="y" cid="c48002021.2"/>then Christ died for no purpose.</verse>

+  <chapter num="3">
+    <heading>By Faith, or by Works of the Law?</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="1">O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? <crossref let="z" cid="c48003001.1"/>It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly <crossref let="a" cid="c48003001.2"/>portrayed as crucified.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48003002"/>
+    <verse num="2">Let me ask you only this: <crossref let="b" cid="c48003002.1"/>Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by <crossref let="c" cid="c48003002.2"/>hearing with faith?</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48003003"/>
+    <verse num="3">Are you so foolish? <crossref let="d" cid="c48003003.1"/>Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by<note nid="n48003003.1"/> the flesh?</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48003004"/>
+    <verse num="4"><crossref let="e" cid="c48003004.1"/>Did you suffer<note nid="n48003004.1"/> so many things in vain&emdash;if indeed it was in vain?</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48003005"/>
+    <verse num="5">Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and <crossref let="f" cid="c48003005.1"/>works miracles among you do so <crossref let="g" cid="c48003005.2"/>by works of the law, or by hearing with faith&emdash;</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48003006"/>
+    <verse num="6">just as <crossref let="h" cid="c48003006.1"/><crossref cid="t48003006.1"/>Abraham <q class="begin-double" qid="48003006.1" from="48003006.1" to="48003006.2"/>believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness<q class="end-double" qid="48003006.2" from="48003006.1" to="48003006.2"/>?</verse>

+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48003007"/>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="7">Know then that it is <crossref let="i" cid="c48003007.1"/>those of faith who are <crossref let="j" cid="c48003007.2"/>the sons of Abraham.</verse>

+    <verse num="8">And the Scripture, foreseeing that <crossref let="k" cid="c48003008.1"/>God would justify<note nid="n48003008.1"/> the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, <crossref let="l" cid="c48003008.2"/><crossref cid="t48003008.1"/><q class="begin-double" qid="48003008.1" from="48003008.1" to="48003008.2"/>In you shall all the nations be blessed.<q class="end-double" qid="48003008.2" from="48003008.1" to="48003008.2"/></verse>

+    <verse num="9">So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.</verse>

+    <heading>The Righteous Shall Live by Faith</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="10">For all who rely on works of the law are <crossref let="m" cid="c48003010.1"/>under a curse; for it is written, <crossref let="n" cid="c48003010.2"/><crossref cid="t48003010.1"/><q class="begin-double" qid="48003010.1" from="48003010.1" to="48003010.2"/>Cursed be everyone who does not <crossref let="o" cid="c48003010.3"/>abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.<q class="end-double" qid="48003010.2" from="48003010.1" to="48003010.2"/></verse>

+    <verse num="11">Now it is evident that <crossref let="p" cid="c48003011.1"/>no one is justified before God by the law, for <crossref let="q" cid="c48003011.2"/><crossref cid="t48003011.1"/><q class="begin-double" qid="48003011.1" from="48003011.1" to="48003011.2"/>The righteous shall live by faith.<q class="end-double" qid="48003011.2" from="48003011.1" to="48003011.2"/><note nid="n48003011.1"/></verse>

+    <verse num="12">But the law is not of faith, rather <crossref let="r" cid="c48003012.1"/><crossref cid="t48003012.1"/><q class="begin-double" qid="48003012.1" from="48003012.1" to="48003012.2"/>The one who does them shall live by them.<q class="end-double" qid="48003012.2" from="48003012.1" to="48003012.2"/></verse>

+    <verse num="13">Christ <crossref let="s" cid="c48003013.1"/>redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us&emdash;for it is written, <crossref let="t" cid="c48003013.2"/><crossref cid="t48003013.1"/><q class="begin-double" qid="48003013.1" from="48003013.1" to="48003013.2"/>Cursed is everyone who is hanged <crossref let="u" cid="c48003013.3"/>on a tree<q class="end-double" qid="48003013.2" from="48003013.1" to="48003013.2"/>&emdash;</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48003014"/>
+    <verse num="14">so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might <crossref let="v" cid="c48003014.1"/>come to the Gentiles, so that <crossref let="w" cid="c48003014.2"/>we might receive <crossref let="x" cid="c48003014.3"/>the promised Spirit<note nid="n48003014.1"/> through faith.</verse>
+    <end-paragraph/>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48003015"/>
+    <heading>The Law and the Promise</heading>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="15"><crossref let="y" cid="c48003015.1"/>To give a human example, brothers:<note nid="n48003015.1"/> <crossref let="z" cid="c48003015.2"/>even with a man-made covenant, no one annuls it or adds to it once it has been ratified.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48003016"/>
+    <verse num="16">Now <crossref let="a" cid="c48003016.1"/>the promises were made <crossref let="b" cid="c48003016.2"/>to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, <q class="begin-double" qid="48003016.1" from="48003016.1" to="48003016.2"/>And to offsprings,<q class="end-double" qid="48003016.2" from="48003016.1" to="48003016.2"/> referring to many, but referring to one, <crossref let="c" cid="c48003016.3"/><q class="begin-double" qid="48003016.3" from="48003016.3" to="48003016.4"/>And to your offspring,<q class="end-double" qid="48003016.4" from="48003016.3" to="48003016.4"/> who is Christ.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48003017"/>
+    <verse num="17">This is what I mean: the law, which came <crossref let="d" cid="c48003017.1"/>430 years afterward, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God, so as <crossref let="e" cid="c48003017.2"/>to make the promise void.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48003018"/>
+    <verse num="18">For if the inheritance comes by the law, it no longer comes by promise; but <crossref let="f" cid="c48003018.1"/>God gave it to Abraham by a promise.</verse>
+    <end-paragraph/>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48003019"/>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="19">Why then the law? <crossref let="g" cid="c48003019.1"/>It was added because of transgressions, <crossref let="h" cid="c48003019.2"/>until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was <crossref let="i" cid="c48003019.3"/>put in place through angels <crossref let="j" cid="c48003019.4"/>by an intermediary.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48003020"/>
+    <verse num="20">Now <crossref let="k" cid="c48003020.1"/>an intermediary implies more than one, but <crossref let="l" cid="c48003020.2"/>God is one.</verse>
+    <end-paragraph/>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48003021"/>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="21">Is the law then contrary to the promises of God? Certainly not! For <crossref let="m" cid="c48003021.1"/>if a law had been given that could give life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48003022"/>
+    <verse num="22">But the Scripture <crossref let="n" cid="c48003022.1"/>imprisoned everything under sin, so that <crossref let="o" cid="c48003022.2"/>the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given <crossref let="p" cid="c48003022.3"/>to those who believe.</verse>
+    <end-paragraph/>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48003023"/>
+    <begin-paragraph/>
+    <verse num="23">Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, <crossref let="q" cid="c48003023.1"/>imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed.</verse>
+    <marker class="begin-verse" mid="v48003024"/>
+    <verse num="24">So then, <crossref let="r" cid="c48003024.1"/>the law was our <crossref let="s" cid="c48003024.2"/>guardian until Christ came, <crossref let="t" cid="c48003024.3"/>in order that we might be justified by faith.</verse>

+    <verse num="25">But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian,</verse>

+    <heading>Paul&apos;s Concern for the Galatians</heading>

+    <verse num="8">Formerly, when you <crossref let="l" cid="c48004008.1"/>did not know God, you <crossref let="m" cid="c48004008.2"/>were enslaved to those that by nature <crossref let="n" cid="c48004008.3"/>are not gods.</verse>

+    <heading>Example of Hagar and Sarah</heading>

+    <verse num="21">Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not listen to the law?</verse>

+    <verse num="22">For it is written that Abraham had two sons, <crossref let="e" cid="c48004022.1"/>one by a slave woman and <crossref let="f" cid="c48004022.2"/>one by a free woman.</verse>

+    <verse num="23">But <crossref let="g" cid="c48004023.1"/>the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while <crossref let="h" cid="c48004023.2"/>the son of the free woman was born through promise.</verse>

+    <verse num="24">Now this may be interpreted allegorically: these women are two <crossref let="i" cid="c48004024.1"/>covenants. <crossref let="j" cid="c48004024.2"/>One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar.</verse>

+    <verse num="25">Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia;<note nid="n48004025.1"/> she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children.</verse>

+    <heading>Christ Has Set Us Free</heading>

+    <verse num="10"><crossref let="k" cid="c48005010.1"/>I have confidence in the Lord that you will <crossref let="l" cid="c48005010.2"/>take no other view, and <crossref let="m" cid="c48005010.3"/>the one who is troubling you will bear the penalty, whoever he is.</verse>

+    <verse num="11">But if I, brothers,<note nid="n48005011.1"/> still preach<note nid="n48005011.2"/> circumcision, <crossref let="n" cid="c48005011.1"/>why am I still being persecuted? In that case <crossref let="o" cid="c48005011.2"/>the offense of the cross has been removed.</verse>

+    <verse num="12">I wish <crossref let="p" cid="c48005012.1"/>those who unsettle you would emasculate themselves!</verse>

+    <heading>Keep in Step with the Spirit</heading>

+    <heading>Final Warning and Benediction</heading>

+    <verse num="12"><crossref let="k" cid="c48006012.1"/>It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh <crossref let="l" cid="c48006012.2"/>who would force you to be circumcised, and only <crossref let="m" cid="c48006012.3"/>in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ.</verse>

+    <verse num="13">For even those who are circumcised do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may boast in your flesh.</verse>
