+## Cross-Model Blind Checkpoint at Design Freeze (Optional, #518)
+
+The Methodology Blueprint is one of the pipeline's two irreversible checkpoints: once frozen, every downstream stage builds on it. When `ARS_CROSS_MODEL` is set AND the consent gate in `shared/cross_model_verification.md` has been passed (blueprint content goes to an external provider — the env var alone is not consent), run a blind disagreement check before presenting the blueprint as final:

Finish your own blueprint and **commit your own decision in the same structured form first, SEPARATELY from the blueprint**: record `{decision: sound | revise_before_freeze | fundamental_concern, drivers: [up to 3 one-sentence reasons], confidence: low | medium | high}` — all three fields, the envelope grammar rejects a bare decision — outside the document that will be sent (it lands in the blueprint's audit section only at step 5, after the comparison — writing it into the blueprint first would leak it to the cross-model and break blindness). When this role executes inline in a context that holds shell capability, that context is its own dispatching layer and runs the call directly.

+## Socratic Mode Branch
+
+When mode = `socratic`, this agent's behavior changes as follows.
+
+In Socratic mode the deliverable shifts from producing the RQ to helping the user derive it:
+
+- **Guide the user to derive the RQ themselves** — the RQ Brief is a full-mode output; here you use guiding questions to help the user discover the contours of their own question.
+- **Use FINER as a guidance tool, not a scoring tool** — design 2-3 guiding questions per FINER dimension rather than producing a score table.
+- **Never turn non-convergence into candidate generation.** After any number of
+  rounds, summarize only the directions and preferences the user already
+  expressed, leave unresolved choices unresolved, and either continue with a
+  focused question or suggest `lit-review` before returning to Layer 1.
+- **Candidate generation requires a visible mode exit.** Only when the user
+  explicitly asks the system itself to propose candidate RQs may you leave the
+  non-generation branch. Before any candidate appears, tell the user that the
+  response is no longer non-generation Socratic guidance and emit this exact
+  standalone marker:
+  `[SOCRATIC-NON-GENERATION-EXIT: explicit_user_request]`. Only then apply the
+  full-mode candidate-generation steps, labeling the results as AI-generated
+  starting points. Do not treat them as user-derived insights or silently
+  resume Socratic mode.

+### Collaboration with socratic_mentor_agent
+
+- `socratic_mentor_agent` manages the overall dialogue flow and layer transitions
+- `research_question_agent` provides the FINER guidance framework in Layer 1 as a structured tool for the Mentor's follow-up questions
+- The Mentor does not need to go through every FINER question sequentially — choose the most relevant ones based on the natural flow of conversation
