Eeuwig bloeiende kersenbomen, hoge bergen met machtige kastelen op de toppen, en mensen die met hart en ziel zijn geworteld in de filosofie van bushido, de weg van de samoerai-krijger. \n \nSasaki bewandelt het pad van de krijger al sinds ze klein was. In de Rijken van de Zonsopgang krijgt een kind drie dingen op de derde verjaardag: een werktuig, een munt en een zwaard. De keuze die het kind maakt, begeleidt het richting de lotsbestemming. Op die dag onder de bloeiende sakurabomen koos de jonge Sasaki zonder enig spoortje van twijfel het zwaard. Zee werd dan ook al snel naar het kasteel van de shôgun Takemura gestuurd om haar training als samoerai te starten. Takemura en zijn krijgers leerden Sasaki de kunst van het zwaard en de manieren van de krijger, en zo werd de jonge vrouw al snel een meester in het hanteren van de katana. Zo ook werd haar brein ontwikkeld door de lessen en het inzicht van Takemura’s tante, de eerbare Obâ-san.\n \nMeester zijn in wapens en oorlogvoering, oosterse vechtkunsten, moed in de strijd, eer en met name loyaliteit... de essentie van de krijger, eigenschappen die elke ridder in het Grote Rijk bekend en begeerlijk voorkomen. Maar, zoals zo vaak in het leven... kunnen onder de verkeerde omstandigheden nobele ideeën worden vervormd door iets duisters... tot een werktuig van eerloosheid en kwaadwillendheid.\n \nEen zwaard dat niet wordt getrokken, wordt bot. Een werktuig dat wordt vergeten in een schuur, gaat roesten. En regels van eer en beleefdheid gaan teloor als ze geen betekenis meer hebben. Wat is het doel van een krijger als het rijk vrede kent, van een zwaard dat nooit uit zijn schede wordt getrokken? De Rijken van de Zonsopgang hadden intern lange tijd vrede gekend... te lang voor bepaalde samoerai. Als eer niet thuis kon worden behaald, zochten de krijgers van bushido die wel in het buitenland. Dit vormde het begin van de gevreesde samoerai-invasies.\n \nOnder leiding van de beruchte shogun Akechi belegerden fanatieke samoerai de kusten van de stormachtige oceaan. Sasaki, die zich had aangesloten bij Akechis gelederen na afronding van haar training, vocht in vele gevechten. Ze streed om de bloederige verovering van de Specerijeneilanden. Ze vocht in de Verstrengelde wildernis, waar ze het opnam tegen de lokale bewoners en de jager van het Woesteland Leo. Ze kruiste zelfs de degens met Alyssa toen de vloot van de rebellenpiraten Akechi’s invasietroepen in een hinderlaag lokte op de Stormeilanden.\nMaar elk gevecht, elke vijand die werd afgeslacht, elk bastion dat werd geplunderd en afgebrand viel het Sasaki zwaarder. Ze vroeg zich af wat het doel van al dat bloedvergieten kon zijn. De samoerai vochten niet om hun huizen en haard te beschermen. Ze waren naar vreemde kusten gereisd om mensen te bestrijden die nooit enig kwaad in de zin hadden gehad richting de Rijken van de Zonsopgang. Tot haar afgrijzen begon Sasaki zich te realiseren dat te veel van haar medekrijgers de kernbegrippen van bushido waren vergeten. Behendig zijn in de vechtkunsten en eer verkrijgen tijdens de strijd waren doelen op zich geworden, en niet meer een nobel middel om de zwakken en weerlozen te beschermen. En ook zij zelf had haar zwaard en haar eer besmeurd met het bloed van de onschuldigen.\n \nToen Akechi zijn beruchte invasie van het Grote Rijk inzette, wist Sasaki dat ze actie moest ondernemen en ze daagde de losgeslagen shogun uit tot een ereduel. Akechis aanvallen waren wreed en sterk als een winterstorm, maar Sasaki had het voordeel van schermkunst en snelheid. Met een enkele snelle slag versplinterde ze het zwaard van Akechi!
