+
+Research is a means, not an end. Every survey, deep-dive, and experiment should trace to a product goal. The product owner keeps this connection visible:

+Research without a product connection is exploration. Exploration is fine, but it should be labeled as such and bounded.

+## Quality Is Quantitative
+
+"Better image quality" is not a product goal. "PSNR > 30dB on test set with inference < 50ms on T4" is. The product owner ensures all quality targets are:
+- Specific (metric name and measurement methodology)
+- Measurable (exact numbers, not ranges)
+- Achievable (grounded in SOTA survey data)
+- Relevant (connected to user/business value)
+- Time-bound (which phase/milestone delivers this)

+## The Gap Drives Everything
+
+The gap between current performance (BASELINE.md) and target performance (PRODUCT-QUALITY.md) is the central organizing principle:
+- Gap analysis determines which phases to plan
+- Gap size determines phase priority
+- Gap closure rate determines if we're on track
+- Gap elimination determines when we're done

+## Deferred Validations Are Promises
+
+Every deferred validation (Level 3 in EVAL.md) is a promise: "We'll validate this at phase X." The product owner tracks these promises and ensures they're kept. An accumulation of unvalidated proxies is a risk that must be managed, not ignored.
