Maar weinig reizigers uit het Grote Rijk zijn er geweest, maar degenen die terugkeren vertellen de stoere verhalen van een exotisch land met duizend eilanden. Eeuwig bloeiende kersenbomen, hoge bergen met machtige kastelen op de toppen, en mensen die met hart en ziel zijn geworteld in de filosofie van bushido, de weg van de samoerai-krijger. \n \nSasaki bewandelt het pad van de krijger al sinds ze klein was. In de Rijken van de Zonsopgang krijgt een kind drie dingen op de derde verjaardag: een werktuig, een munt en een zwaard. De keuze die het kind maakt, begeleidt het richting de lotsbestemming. Op die dag onder de bloeiende sakurabomen koos de jonge Sasaki zonder enig spoortje van twijfel het zwaard. Zee werd dan ook al snel naar het kasteel van de shôgun Takemura gestuurd om haar training als samoerai te starten. Takemura en zijn krijgers leerden Sasaki de kunst van het zwaard en de manieren van de krijger, en zo werd de jonge vrouw al snel een meester in het hanteren van de katana. Zo ook werd haar brein ontwikkeld door de lessen en het inzicht van Takemura’s tante, de eerbare Obâ-san.\n \nMeester zijn in wapens en oorlogvoering, oosterse vechtkunsten, moed in de strijd, eer en met name loyaliteit... de essentie van de krijger, eigenschappen die elke ridder in het Grote Rijk bekend en begeerlijk voorkomen. Maar zoals zo vaak in het leven... kunnen onder de verkeerde omstandigheden nobele ideeën worden vervormd door iets duisters... tot een werktuig van eerloosheid en kwaadwillendheid.\n \nEen zwaard dat niet wordt getrokken, wordt bot. Een werktuig dat wordt vergeten in een schuur, gaat roesten. En regels van eer en beleefdheid gaan teloor als ze geen betekenis meer hebben. Wat is het doel van een krijger als het rijk vrede kent, van een zwaard dat nooit uit zijn schede wordt getrokken? De Rijken van de Zonsopgang hadden intern lange tijd vrede gekend... te lang voor bepaalde samoerai. Als eer niet thuis kon worden behaald, zochten de krijgers van bushido die wel in het buitenland. Dit vormde het begin van de gevreesde samoerai-invasies.\n \nOnder leiding van de beruchte shogun Akechi belegerden fanatieke samoerai de kusten van de stormachtige oceaan. Sasaki, die zich had aangesloten bij Akechis gelederen na afronding van haar training, vocht in vele gevechten. Ze streed om de bloederige verovering van de Specerijeneilanden. Ze vocht in de Verstrengelde wildernis, waar ze het opnam tegen zowel de lokale bewoners als jager van het Woesteland Leo. Ze kruiste zelfs de degens met Alyssa toen de vloot van de rebellenpiraten Akechi’s invasietroepen in een hinderlaag lokte op de Stormeilanden.\nMaar elk gevecht, elke vijand die werd afgeslacht, elk bastion dat werd geplunderd en afgebrand viel het Sasaki zwaarder. Ze vroeg zich af wat het doel van al dat bloedvergieten kon zijn. De samoerai vochten niet om hun huis en haard te beschermen. Ze waren naar vreemde kusten gereisd om mensen te bestrijden die nooit enig kwaad in de zin hadden gehad richting de Rijken van de Zonsopgang. Tot haar afgrijzen begon Sasaki zich te realiseren dat te veel van haar medekrijgers de kernbegrippen van bushido waren vergeten. Behendig zijn in de vechtkunsten en eer verkrijgen tijdens de strijd waren doelen op zich geworden, en niet meer een nobel middel om de zwakken en weerlozen te beschermen. En ook zij zelf had haar zwaard en haar eer besmeurd met het bloed van de onschuldigen.\n \nToen Akechi zijn beruchte invasie van het Grote Rijk inzette, wist Sasaki dat ze actie moest ondernemen en ze daagde de losgeslagen daimyo uit tot een ereduel. Akechis aanvallen waren wreed en sterk als een winterstorm, maar Sasaki had het voordeel van schermkunst en snelheid. Met een enkele snelle slag versplinterde ze het zwaard van Akechi! Maar voordat ze de dwaze krijgsheer kon uitschakelen, begonnen zijn hulpjes Sasaki te bestoken met bogen en lansen, waardoor het duel om de eer een farce werd! In de minderheid maar niet verslagen brak Sasaki door de vijandelijke linies en wist te ontsnappen, eerst uit het kasteel van Akechi en daarna uit de Rijken van de Zonsopgang!\n \nBij aankomst in het Grote Rijk zwoer Sasaki dat ze haar zwaard nooit meer zou onteren en nooit meer een verkeerde krijgsheer zou volgen. Ze werd ronin, een samoerai zonder meester, en vocht vanaf dat moment om de mensen te beschermen die verkeerd waren behandeld door haar voormalige landgenoten.\nVoorlopig blijft ze in het Grote Rijk en biedt ze haar diensten aan de heren en dames van het rijk aan. De gewoontes van het land waren vreemd, het eten niet naar haar smaak en de feesten van heer Horatio te ruig... maar de gevechten waren glorieus en voor een goede zaak. Sasaki weet dat ze eindelijk in staat is om de ware weg van bushido te volgen.",

I soloppgangenes kongeriker får barn tre gaver på den tredje bursdagen sin: et verktøy, en mynt og en klinge. Den gjenstanden barnet velger, vil veilede skjebnen dets. Den dagen under de blomstrende sakuratrærne valgte unge Sasaki klingen uten å nøle. Kort tid etter ble hun sendt til slottet til Shôgun Takemura for å begynne samurai-opplæringen. Takemura og krigerne hans lærte Sasaki klingens kunst og krigerens levesett, og slik mestret den unge kvinnen raskt katanaen. Et verktøy som blir glemt i et skjul, begynner å ruste. Og regler om ære og høflighet blir til håndjern når de ikke lenger har noen betydning. Hva er krigerens formål når det er fred i riket, når en klinge aldri blir trukket fra sliren? Det har lenge vært fred i soloppgangens kongeriker … for lenge for enkelte samuraier. Hvis de ikke kunne oppnå ære hjemme, ville bushido-krigerne finne det i utlandet. Dette startet de fryktede samurai-invasjonene.\n \nHærer av fanatiske samuraier ledet av Shogun Akechi gikk til angrep langs kysten av Stormhavet. Sasaki, som gikk inn i Akechis tjeneste etter opplæringen, deltok i mange slag. Hun kjempet i den blodige erobringen av Krydderøyene. Konfronterte både innfødte og villmarksjegeren Leo i den tette jungelen. Hun fektet til og med med Alyssa da rebellpiratens flåte tok Akechis invasjonsstyrke på Stormøyene i bakhold.\nMen for hver kamp og hver fiende hun felte, for hver borg hun plyndret og brant til grunnen, ble Sasakis hjerte tyngre. Og hun hadde selv stenket klingen og æren sin med de uskyldiges blod.\n \nDa Akechi startet den beryktede invasjonen av Det store riket, visste Sasaki at hun måtte gjøre noe, og hun utfordret daimyoen til en duell. Akechis hugg var rå og sterke som en vinterstorm, men Sasaki var rask og dyktig, og med ett enkelt hugg knuste hun klingen til Akechi! Men før hun kunne hugge ned den gale krigsherren, gikk lakeiene hans til angrep på Sasaki med buer og lanser, og de gjorde en ærbar duell til en ren farse. W Królestwach Wschodzącego Słońca każde dziecko otrzymuje na trzecie urodziny trzy przedmioty: narzędzie, monetę oraz miecz. Jakikolwiek przedmiot wybierze dziecko, pokieruje ono jego przeznaczeniem. Tego dnia, w cieniu kwitnących wiśni, młoda Sasaki bez chwili wahania wybrała miecz. Sprawiło to, że wkrótce potem została wysłana do zamku szoguna Takemury, gdzie rozpoczęła szkolenie jako wojowniczka samurajów. Takemura i jego wojownicy nauczyli Sasaki sztuki walki mieczem oraz drogi wojownika, a młoda kobieta wkrótce została mistrzynią katany. Jej umysł został zaś wyostrzony dzięki naukom i przebiegłości ciotki Takemury, czcigodnej Obâ-san.\n \nBiegłość w posługiwaniu się bronią i sztuką wojenną, znajomość sztuk walki, męstwo w bitwie, honor, a zwłaszcza lojalność… Oto esencja wojownika, która brzmiałaby znajomo dla każdego rycerza z Wielkiego Cesarstwa. A jednak, jakże często w życiu… W nieodpowiednich okolicznościach szlachetne idee mogą zostać przekute w coś złowrogiego… W narzędzie hańby i zła.\n \nNieużywane ostrze tępieje. Narzędzie leżące w szopie z czasem zaczyna pokrywać się rdzą. Zasady honoru i uprzejmości zamieniają się zaś w kajdany w chwili, gdy przestają mieć znaczenie. Jaki jest cel wojownika, którego królestwo zaznało pokoju? Jaka jest rola ostrza, które nigdy nie jest dobywane? Królestwa Wschodzącego Słońca od dawna cieszyły się pokojem… Jak dla niektórych samurajów, od zbyt dawna. Jeśli honoru nie można dostąpić w domu, wojownicy bushido będą szukać go w odległych stronach.
