We drew heavily from a previously open-source version of the [Blonk Direct Land Use Change Assessment Tool](https://blonksustainability.nl/using-the-direct-land-use-change-assessment-tool-and-agri-footprint-crop-model-to-understand-trends) that had been adjusted to include pasture and to reconcile better to global totals as described in Poore & Nemecek (2018).\n\nThe model uses the following logic:\n- First, arable crops were taken to expand into existing arable area first, and permanent crops into existing permanent crop area first.\n- Second, where the sum of expansion and contraction of all crops (net expansion) was positive, arable cropland was assumed to expand into permanent cropland if a negative balance existed in the other, and vice versa.\n- Third, both arable crops, permanent crops, and permanent pasture were taken to expand proportionately into deforested area.\n- Fourth, any remaining cropland not accounted for was taken to expand into pasture or vice versa if a negative balance existed in the other. Finally, any remaining agricultural area expansion was allocated to the ‘other land’ category (which includes degraded land).\n\nUnder this model, Poore & Nemecek (2018) report that 61% of 1990-2010 forest loss was attributable to commercial agriculture (excluding shifting cultivation), which reconciles well to statistical data sources but may underestimate land use change compared to satellite derived estimates.\n\n### Caveat about inferring the causes of land use change\n\nWhere land use has changed multiple times within a twenty-year period, the driver of land use change may be uncertain. For example, in Brazil over the twenty-year period between 1990 and 2010, `permanent pasture` contracted slighly, `annual cropland` expanded, and `forest` also contracted. Our model therefore attributes the cause of this `forest` loss to expanding `cropland`. However, on the ground in Brazil, deforestation is initially for `permanent pasture`, but within a few years this is converted into `annual cropland` (mostly soy). While the `permanent pasture` expansions is the initial driver of land use change, it is the pressure for increased soy area that we consider the driver in this model.\n\n## Data sources\n\nThis model relies entirely on data from FAOSTAT. It used a combination of the [land use statistics](https://www.fao.org/faostat/en/#data/RL) and the [area harvested statistics](https://www.fao.org/faostat/en/#data/QCL) for specific crops.\n\n## Overview of how the model works\n\nThe inputs for the model consists of a site which must be of type `forest`, `cropland`, `permanent pasture` or `other natural vegetation`.\n\nThe site must contain management blank nodes. These specify the crop that was grown on the land at a certain point in time, or specify that the land was permanent pasture at a certain point in time.\n\nThis is used to produce five new management nodes with start and end dates twenty years earlier and modelled land use types. The type of these nodes includes `forest`, `annualCropland`, `permanentPasture` and `otherLand`.\n\nIn the case of `permanentCropland`, we make the assumption that the crop currently present on the site (e.g., olive trees or palm trees) was the same 20 years prior, and we therefore replace the historical `permanentCropland` by the current crop. This is important as different permanent crops have different carbon stocks and this change prevents carbon stock changes occurring when an actual land use change was unlikely.\n\nThe values for these nodes represent the percentage of that land type. They will sum to 100%.\n\n## Conditions which prevent the model from running\n\n - Missing lookup data (e.g., there may be no FAOSTAT data for a certain country). Note that the model may run if FAOSTAT data is missing for a crop, as long as the high-level land use type (such as `permanentCropland`) can be determined.\n - Site type is not one of `cropland`, `forest`, `other natural vegetation` or `permanent pasture`. Note: buildings, such as `agri-food processor`, `animal housing`, and `food retailer` are currently running the model in a simplified version, where any existing `landCover` equivalent will be used as a starting point, and `otherLand` will be gap-filled to `100%` 20years prior the first production Cycle.\n - The sum of site areas in the current year is not 100%. This could be caused by an error in the model.\n\n## Model logic\n\nThe logic of the land cover model can be summarized by the following steps.\n\n### 1. Determine land use type\n\nLand use type is derived from existing management nodes to determine how the land is being used. The value can be one of `Arable land`, `Permanent crops` or `Permanent meadows and pastures`.\n\n### 2. Check for prior land cover data\n\nThe model is not intended to replace user-provided land cover data, so an initial check is made to ensure that no such data exists twenty years prior. A two-year tolerance is applied to this date.\n\n### 3. Get land change information\n\nThe absolute values of twenty-year expansion are obtained from the `region-faostatArea-UpTo20YearExpansion` lookup. These are in units of 1000 ha and have some gap-filling applied. This is an assumption to provide more accurate results overall. Different permanent crops have different carbon stocks. For example, coffee has only a little carbon above the ground. Apples have a lot more. An average for `Permanent cropland` has a medium amount. Without this, the land use change model would always create a change in emissions when the land remained `Permanent cropland`.
