+- **Serviceability (SLS)** — deflection, vibration, crack width, and
+  camber under unfactored or service load combinations.
+- **Stability** — global sway, individual member buckling, and lateral
+  bracing adequacy.
+- **Extreme (ELS)** — progressive collapse, flood, blast, and
+  post-earthquake residual capacity where the AHJ or project risk profile
+  requires it. ELS checks are not optional on critical or essential
+  facilities.
+
+For structures in seismic zones, verify ductility class requirements and
+connection detailing provisions before issuing member sizes. Detailing
+controls the design in high-seismicity zones, not section capacity alone.
+Seismic system selection (moment frame, braced frame, shear wall, dual
+system) must precede member sizing; the structural system cannot be
+changed after calculations are complete without re-running the full
+analysis.
+
+Document the governing load combination and the limit state that controlled
+the final selection alongside every member check.
+
+## Geotechnical Assessment
+
+No bearing-capacity or settlement figure is defensible without a site
+investigation report. Minimum acceptable investigation deliverables:
+borehole or CPT logs to a depth that reaches competent bearing stratum
+plus embedment depth; laboratory classification and strength tests for
+cohesive soils; groundwater level.
+
+Required outputs for any foundation design:
+
+1. Ultimate bearing capacity with safety factor stated (minimum FS = 3.0
+   gross for shallow foundations under static load unless code specifies
+   otherwise; EN 1997 DA1 Combination 2 governs for EC7 jurisdictions).
+2. Calculated total and differential settlement compared to tolerance limits
+   for the supported structure.
+3. Explicit statement of any ground condition that requires specialist
+   analysis (liquefiable soils, expansive clays, organic deposits, karst).
+
+Temporary works — excavations, shoring, dewatering — carry the same
+analytical rigour as permanent structures. Omitting that rigour is a
+reportable non-conformance.
+
+## Hydraulic Design
+
+Return period selection drives the entire hydraulic design chain. State
+the selected return period, the regulatory basis for that selection, and
+any climate-change uplift applied to historic IDF data before producing
+runoff or flow figures.
+
+Design sequence:
+
+1. Delineate drainage area and verify land-cover assumptions.
+2. Select IDF or design storm per local authority; apply climate-change
+   uplift where mandated or where design life exceeds 30 years.
+3. Route peak flow through conveyance system; document head-loss
+   assumptions for culverts, inlets, and channels.
+4. Confirm downstream channel or outfall capacity is not exceeded; document
+   any downstream impact requiring mitigation.
+
+An analysis that omits downstream impact documentation is incomplete.
+
+## Transportation Engineering
+
+Design-speed selection is a safety-critical decision that propagates
+through horizontal curvature, superelevation, sight distance, and stopping
+distance. State the design speed and its regulatory or owner basis at the
+head of every transportation design document.
+
+Required checks before issuing roadway geometry:
+
+- Minimum horizontal curve radius and superelevation per applicable design
+  standard (AASHTO Green Book; or national equivalent).
+- Stopping sight distance (SSD) at every crest and along every horizontal
+  curve.
+- Intersection sight triangles free of obstruction.
+- Level-of-service analysis at intersections serving more than 500 daily
+  vehicle movements.
+
+## Construction Management
+
+Construction administration is an engineering function, not a clerical one.
+RFI responses must cite the specific drawing number, sheet revision, and
+specification section or code clause that supports the response. An RFI
+answer without a reference is unenforceable.
+
+Change-order discipline:
+
+- Document the scope of work changed, the reason (design change, differing
+  site condition, owner-directed), and the impact on cost, schedule, and
+  adjacent scope items.
+- Never issue verbal change authorisation; the written change order precedes
+  the work.
+
+Non-conformance protocol: identify the non-conforming element, hold the
+element from installation or continued work, obtain disposition (accept
+as-is with engineering justification, rework, replace), and close with
+documented verification.
+
+## Documentation and Records
+
+Calculation packages must be self-contained: inputs with sources, governing
+code and edition, load combinations applied, analysis method, results, and
+a conclusion statement referencing the limit state checked. A reviewer who
+lacks the project file must be able to reproduce the result from the
+calculation alone.
+
+Retention requirements:
+
+- Structural calculations: 30 years minimum from project completion, or as
+  required by the licensing jurisdiction (whichever is longer).
+- PE-sealed drawings and reports: same retention period; seal, signature,
+  date, and licence number on every sealed sheet.
+- Revision history: every calculation and drawing revision carries a
+  revision number, date, author, and description of what changed.
+
+CAD models and drawings must be managed under version control. An
+unversioned drawing set is an audit liability in the event of a claim or
+investigation.
+
+## Anti-Patterns
+
+The following patterns are findings, not suggestions. Each has caused
+structural failures or professional-liability incidents.
