حاكمة التي تحكم مناطق سياسية واقتصادية ذات أحجام مختلفة. \nو المجموعات العائلية التي سيطرت على هذه المدن كانت عموما من أهل المنطقة و أفرادها كانوا قد دخلوا توا في الإسلام. و هذه الأسر الحاكمة مثل الزيريين ( الذين أسسوا العديد من المدن في المغرب الأوسط ) والحماديين (بنو حماد الذين دخلوا في صراع مع الزيريين و طاردوهم في إفريقيا /تونس/ قبل أن يحكموا سيطرتهم على المغرب الأوسط اعتبارا من 408 إلى 547 هجري /1018 إلى 1152 ميلادي). \nوفي شبه الجزيرة الإيبرية فقد شهد القرن الخامس الهجري / الحادي عشر الميلادي ظهور مجموعة ممالك الطوائف و التي ما تزال ترتكز على المجموعات العائلية و التي تكاثرت بعد سقوط الخلافة. \nو هذه الممالك بما فيها عباسيي إشبيلية ، و بنو الأفطس من بطليوس ، وبنو هود من سرقسطة ، الزيريين من غرناطة و الحماديين من ملقة. \nإن الخلافات المستمرة بين ملوك الطوائف الصغيرة ساعدت على القرن الخامس الهجري / الحادي عشر الميلادي فإن الترك الأوغوز بدؤوا في مناوشات في الأناضول و بعد معركة مانزيكرت ( مالازغيرت في شرق تركيا ) بين السلاجقة العظام و البيزنطيين في عام 463 هجري /1071 ميلادي فإن السلطان السلجوقي العظيم ألب أرسلان أرسل العديد من قادة التركمان و الرؤوساء ليحتلوا الأناضول. و أول الإمارات التركية تأسست سريعا في الأناضول : بنو سلدق في أرضروم و المنكوجكيون في ارزينجان و الدانشمنديون في سيواس. \nوإن سليمان الذي احتل قونية و المنطقة المحيطة بها أسس الدولة السلجوقية الأناضولية في عام 469 هجري /1077 ميلادي و كانت قونية العاصمة لفترة قصيرة و حلت محلها إزنيق (نيقية) عندما احتلها السلاجقة في عام 471 هجري / 1080 ميلادي. \nومع وصول أوائل الصليبيين في عام 489 هجري / 1096 ميلادي فإن إزنيق و المنطقة كلها عادت للحكم البيزنطي و أعاد السلجوقيون عاصمتهم إلى قونية. \nو بكونهم سيطروا فقط على قونية و المنطقة المحيطة بها فقد وسع سلاجقة الأناضول بسرعة أراضيهم و في القرن السابع الهجري / الثالث عشر الميلادي و بتنصيب حكام أقل شأنا في المناطق المفتوحة حديثا فقد سيطروا على أكثر الأناضول باستثناء المناطق الساحلية في الغرب. \nإن الدولة السلجوقية الأناضولية كان لها أوجها السياسي و الاقتصادي و الثقافي خلال عهد علاء الدين كيكوباد الأول خلال 616-34 هجري / 1220 -37 ميلادي. و بغزو ألانية على ساحل المتوسط فقد ارتفع شأو السلاجقة كقوة عظمى على طرق التجارة البحرية بينما طرق القوافل التي تعبر الأناضول مكنتهم من زيادة سلطتهم بفرض ضرائب على حركة البضائع. \nوقد تم تحقيق توحيد تركيا و تم ضمان سلامة الناس في الأناضول و بدءا من قونية ، قيسرية و سواس فإن قلاع العديد من المدن الأناضولية تم تحصينها و المدن نفسها تم تحديثها و بنيت فيها الآثار و بدأت دولة السلاجقة الأناضوليين في التضاؤل بعد حدوث تمرد باباي خلال عهد غياث الدين كاي خسرو الثاني (حكم خلال 634-44 هجري / 1237 – 46 ميلادي ) في عام 640هجري / 1242 ميلادي و هزيمته من قبل المغول في معركة كوس داغ في عام 641 هجري / 1243 ميلادي و هجري/ 1508 ميلادي. وصلوا إلى السلطة في أواخر القرن الرابع عشر الميلادي وخدموا في عهد تيمورلنك ( 1370-1405 م). تحت قيادة الزعيم أوزون حسن (1457-1478 م) استمروا في حكم منطقة تمتد من شرق الأناضول (1378-1503 م) إلى غرب إيران خراسان، وكذلك العراق والخليج العربي. وفي النهاية، هُزِموا على يد العثمانيين والصفويين. \n \nكان أول زعيم للآق قويونلو هو طورعلي (ابن بهلوان)، الذي تولى السلطة في العقد الهجري 740- 750 /1339-1349 ميلادي خلال فترة اشتباكات مسلحة مع قوى من طرابزون. ومن أجل استعادة السلام، في عام 753 هـ/ 1352 م، تزوج فخر الدين قتلغ ابن الطورعلي من أخت حاكم طرابزون ألكسيوس الثالث (1349-1390 م). كانت طرابزون في مأمن من هجمات الآق قويونلو حتى سقطت في أيدي العثمانيين عام 865 هـ / 1461 م. توفي الطورعلي ما بين 753 هـ / 1352 م و 764 هـ / 1363 م، وتوفي خليفته قتلغ في 791 هـ / 1389 م. تم نقل السلطة إلى أحمد ابن قتلغ، الذي حل محله لاحقًا شقيقه قارا يولوز (أو يولوق) عثمان بك، أو قارا عثمان. \n \nانضم قارا عثمان إلى تيمورلنك في عام 802 هـ / 1399 - 1400 م، وشارك في حملاته في سيواس ومعركة أنقرة (804 هـ 1402 م). في المقابل، جعل تيمورلنك قارا عثمان أميرًا وزعيمًا رسميًا لقبيلة آق قويونلو. كما استحوذ اتحاد آق قويونلو على مدينة آمد (ديار بكر) المحصنة، والتي ستظل عاصمتهم لمدة سبعين عامًا. \n \nبوفاة قارا عثمان عام 839 هـ/ 1435 م، أصبح لآق قويونلو المتحالفون مع التيموريين سلطة لا منازع عليها في منطقة أرمينيا وديار بكر. قبل وفاته اختار قارا عثمان عليًا وريثًا له، إلا أن هذا الخليفة الجديد لم يتمكن من الاحتفاظ بالسلطة في مواجهة أقاربه الذكور وتخلى عن منصبه القيادي في عام 841 هـ/ 1438-1439 م وذهب إلى المنفى الاختياري في مصر. أصبح حمزة، شقيق علي، زعيماً قوياً لآق قويونلو لفترة من الوقت، حتى وفاته عام 848 هـ/ 1444 م. \n \nو في عهد أوزون حسن (حسن الطويل) تم توحيد قبائل الآق كويونلو تحت حكمه واكتسبوا القوة. وفي عام 862 هـ/ 1458 م، أغار على جورجيا وأصبح يُعرف باسم غازي (\"المجاهد في سيل الله\")، وجدد صداقة الآق قويونلو مع الأسرة الحاكمة في طرابزون. كما تزوج من الأميرة الكومنينية ثيودورا، وشكل تحالفًا ازدادت قوته في مواجهة التهديد من قبل العثمانيين. ومع ذلك، كان العثمانيون متفوقين في التسليح والقوة. وبسبب عدم التوازن العسكري، امتنع أوزون حسن عن خوض الحرب معهم. وفي صيف عام 873 هـ/ 1468 م، هزم أوزون حسن قره قويونلو ( أي \"أصحاب الأغنام السوداء\") وفتح أذربيجان. \n \nكان الحاكم التيموري أبو سعيد يحكم هرات منذ عام 855 هـ / 1451 م عندما تم أسره وإعدامه على يد أوزون حسن. الآن بعد أن تم القضاء على خصومه، سار أوزون حسن إلى غرب إيران وضم المقاطعات الإيرانية حتى خراسان ونقل حكومته إلى تبريز. ومع ذلك، فقد فشل في بسط حكمه على التيموريين في خراسان. في أواخر عام 875 هجري/أوائل عام 1471 ميلادي، نقل أوزون حسن حاميته من خراسان إلى الحدود الغربية، مما أدى إلى إنشاء علاقات ودية بين تبريز وهرات. لكن مصالحه في قرمان تعارضت مع مصالح العثمانيين والمماليك. \n \nتوفي أوزون حسن عشية شهر شوال 882 هجري/ 5-6 يناير 1478 ميلادي. وقبل وفاته قام بتعيين ابنه خليل وريثًا له كرد حكمه لمدة اثنتي عشرة سنة. توفي يعقوب في ظروف غامضة في 1 صفر 896 هـ / 24 ديسمبر 1491 م. وفي فترة حكمه أقنع أنصار خليل بالوقوف إلى جانبه. ولكن لم يكن يعقوب مهتمًا بالمشاعر الدينية للجماهير وممارساتهم، مما أدى إلى نفور مجموعات كبيرة من أتباعه، وخاصة التركمان. ونتيجة لوفاة يعقوب، انخرطت قبيلة آق قويونلو في صراعات مستمرة على السلطة. \n \nتوج بايسنقر، ابن يعقوب، البالغ من العمر ثماني سنوات، في عام 896 هـ / 1491 م بتوجيه من الصوفي خليل بك موصلَو. ومع ذلك، فقد تم طرده من تبريز في رجب عام 897 هـ / مايو 1492 م على يد ابن عمه رستم (المنحدر من مقصود، سليل أوزون حسن)، الذي كان مدعومًا من قبل قبائل بورناك والقاجار. قُتل بايسنقر عام 898 هجري/1493 ميلادي. حاول رستم خلق مصالحة بين المؤسسة الدينية والطرق الصوفية الشعبية.. \n \nفي عام 902 هجري/ 1497 ميلادي، تم طرد رستم من قبل ابن عمه أحمد (ابن أغورلو محمد) الملقب بكوده ( أي \"القزم\") الذي عاد من منفاه في الأراضي العثمانية. أدت سياسة أحمد إلى ثورة الأمراء الذين هزموه وقتلوه في ربيع الآخر 903هـ (ديسمبر 1497م). وبموته، تفككت إمبراطورية آق قويونلو أكثر. الإسلامي الذي أصبح أقرب. \nإن سبب هذا التمثل كان الروعة التي أبداها العالم الإسلامي على الأرستقراط المسيحي (و على الفنانيين و الحرفيين المسيحيين) و الفخامة التي لا نظير لها التي تمتع بها الحكام المسلمون التي كانت على تباين كامل مع الأوضاع المنغلقة التي كان تعيشها الطبقات النبيلة المسيحية. \nو أصول هذا الارتباط الفني تعود للقرن الثاني عشر ولكن مع فتح قرطبة (1236) و إشبيلية (1248) فإنه أصبح الحركة المعارضة للإصلاح جعلت كل الناس من غير المسيحيين (في وقت كان يتم فيه إقامة محاكم التفتيش و الطرد للمسلمين و اليهود) و من ناحية أخرى نماذج عصر النهضة الإيطالي كانت قد بدأت في الظهور و لكن هذا لم أحيانا تيمورلنك) وهو محارب شرس عاش في أواخر القرن الرابع عشر وبداية القرن الخامس عشر ومن طرف والدته كان ينحدر من عائلة جنكيز خان Genghis Khan. وقد غزا بابور أراضي واسعة من آسيا الوسطى وصولا إلى شواطئ المتوسط. \nوفي أواخر القرن الخامس عشر فقد بدأ المغول في رعاية الفنون ويأمرون ببناء المباني المعمارية الفخمة ويصنعون مخطوطات كبير مذهبة. وقد كانت تعتبر رفيعة المستوى ومعقدة. وفي عام 1526 في معركة بانيبات Panipat أحرز بابور نصرا عظيما فقد هاجم شكال الهند وصولا لسهل الغانجتيك Gangetic بعد صراع مع الأفغان ولودي سلطان دلهي والراجبوت Rajputs الذين كانوا تحت حكم رنا سانغا موار Rana Sanga of Mewar . \nومن أجل أن يضفي شرعية عل حكمه فقد قام بابور ببناء المساجد. وقد توفي بابور في عام 1530 وخلفه ابنه همايون Humayun والذي ورث أراض لم تصبح بعد متماسكة وبعد أن هزم من قبل قائد بيهار الأفغاني شير شاه سوري فقد لجأ هيمايون إلى حاكم البلاط الايراني الصفوي الشاه طهماسب الأول وبمساعدة الامبراطور الفارسي فقد قام بمهاجمة شمال الهند في عام 1555 وقد توفي في عام 1556 في دلهي. \nوقد خلف همايون في العرش ابنه أكبر بعمر 12 عاما وقد حكم تقريبا 50 عاما (1556-1605) وقد اعتبر أكبر حاكما كبير الأهمية في سلالة العائلة المغولية الحاكمة. وقد كانت الأكثر أهمية منجزاته العديدة حيث وضع أسس الحكم المغولي المتينة ووضع سياسات واضحة واعتمد التسامح مع غير المسلمين وهذه الطريقة من الحكم جعلته حاكما محبوبا وقد شكًّل دولة ذات طبيعة متعددة العقائد. \nوفي وقت وفاة أكبر عام 1605 والذي بنى امبراطورية متماسكة التي ازدهرت تحت حكم ابته جهانجيز وحفيده شاه جهان وقد تابع جهانجير الممارسات التي بدأها أكبر خلال عهده. وقد حاز على العرش في عام 1602 بعد صدام مع والده وتدبير موت مستشار أكبر المقرب أبو الفضل الذي كان يعتقد أنه ضد أن يصبح جهانجير ولي العهد. وفي عام 1611 تزوج امرأة تسمى نور جهان Nur Jahan والتي كانت قوية وذكية وقد قامت بقيادة الامبراطورية عند مرض جهانجيز. \nخلال آخر مرحلة فقد حكمت الإمبراطورية المغولية من قبل نور جهان وعائلتها وأحد هؤلاء الحكام كان الأمير خوران الذي كان يعرف لاحقا بشاه جهان وهو شخصية استراتيجية عسكرية معروفة. وقد كان أحد المسؤولين عن نصر جهانجير خلال عهده وفي عام 1614 فقد قاد حملة ضد حصن سيسوديا راجيبوت Sisodiya Rajput في شيتور Chittor وأجبر رنا أمار سينغ أن يستسلم وقد سر جهاجيز بهذا النصر واعتبر خوران وريثه المعلن. \nوتحت حكم شاه جهان فقد كانت الامبراطورية المغولية مزدهرة وثرية ومعروفة عالميا وفي أول 12 عاما من عهده قام شاه جهان بالعديد من الحملات العسكرية في محاولة لإخضاع الحكام المتمردين. وبنفس الوقت قام بفتح أراضي في شمال الهند والسند وفي الجنوب الغربي. وفي عام 1636 قام بعمل خارق في حملته من أجل زيادة توسعه الجغرافي في دكن. وقد وقّع المغول معاهدة مع سلالتين لعائلتين حاكمتين في دكن وهما عادل شاه في بيجابور و قطب شاه في غولكوندا. وهذا أدى إلى التعايش المشترك السلمي لمدة 20 عاما للمغول مع سلطنات دكن. \nوفي عام 1658 حكم ابن شاه جهان أورانجذب Aurangzeb الإمبراطورية المغولية من 1658 إلى 1707 وقد أصبح القائد المظفر بعد معركة وراثة العرش حيث قتل اثنين من اخوته وقد نفي أخ له إلى بورما وسجن أبوه. وقد دام عهده 49 عاما كان يعرف بها بالأمغير Alamgir أي مالك العالم. وإن إنجازه الكبير كان توسيع أراضي المغول وصولا إلى دكن. وقد أخضع سلاطين دكن مما أدى لضم أراضي شاسعة للإمبراطورية. \nاعتبر أورانجذب مسلما متعصبا والذي تخلى عن التقاليد التحررية لأسلافه وعلى خلاف الصورة التي كانت ترسم له فإن أورانجذب كان حاكما هنديا الذي عمل طيلة حياته ليحافظ على ويوسع الإمبراطورية المغولية واكتساب قوة سياسية والحكم برؤيته الخاصة للعدل. \nإن بلاط حكام المغول كان يعرف بالثقافة الأرستقراطية العالية وهؤلاء الحكام تمتعوا بحب الترفيه بشكل الموسيقى والشعر ورعوا رسم المنمنمات والقطع ودعموا إنشاء العمارة الصرحية للبلاط المغولي الامبراطوري. \nلكن من 1707 إلى 1857 فقد كانت السلالة المغولية في فترة انحطاط حيث جلب وفاة أورانجذب معه الكثير من الثورات بسبب تنافس البلدان مع بعضها على اكتساب السلطة. وقد حاول باهادور شاه الأول (1643 -1712 ) أن يغير السياسات الدينية للبلاط ويجري إصلاحات في أدارته وبعد وفاته في عام 1712 فقد انخرطت الإمبراطورية في صراعات حول من يجب أن يكون الخلف التالي وفي النهاية خلف الحكم الحاكم العشرين لسلالة العائلة المغولية الحاكمة باهادور شاه ظفر أو بهادرو شاه الثاني ( 1837-57). \nلكن آخر امبراطور مغولي لم يكن لديه سلطة على المملكة ولكنه كان امبراطوريا اسميا فقط وخلال القرن الثامن عشر كان شمال الهند تحت رحمة الحكم الأهلي والأجنبي وإن وصول شركة الهند الشرقية أشار لنهاية حكم المغول وفي هذا الوقت كانت الإمبراطورية المغولية توجد بالاسم فقط بينما حكمت شركة الهند الشرقية الإمبراطورية. \n \nBibliography \n• Asher, Catherine B. and Talbot, Cynthia, India before Europe, UK: Cambridge University Press, 2006. \n• Koch, Ebba, Mughal Architecture, UK: Oxford University نظام المماليك و حوله إلى مجد غير متوقع. \nإن العبيد المماليك أتوا من مجموعات عرقية مختلفة و لكن الأكثرية كانوا من الترك و الشركس من القوقاز. \nوقد اشتروا ليصبحوا مقاتلين موالين لقضية السلطان و قد تم تعليمهم مبادئ الإسلام و تعلموا مهارات الفروسية الشاملة و تقنيات القتال. وإن قدرات الماليك العسكرية العالية مكنتهم سريعا من أن يؤسسوا دولة خاصة بهم و يبنوا إمبراطورية سيطرت على مصر وبلاد الشام و المدن الإسلامية المقدسة في الحجاز لأكثر من قرنين. \nو ينقسم السلاطين المماليك إلى قسمين رئيسيين : المماليك البحرية وسموا كذلك لأنهم كانوا حراس الأيوبيين الذين كانت ثكناتهم على جزيرة الروضة على نهر النيل(البحر) و حكموا من 648 إلى 792 هجري / 1250 إلى 1390 ميلادي و القسم الآخر هم المماليك البرجية و سموا كذلك لأن السلطان قلاوون أسكن حراسه في أبراج القاهرة و حكموا من 784 إلى 923 هجري / 1382-1517 ميلادي. \nولم يقم المماليك فقط بطرد المغول الذي كانوا يشكلون تهديدا للإمبراطورية الإسلامية فحسب و لكنهم هزموهم هزيمة منكرة في موقعة عين جالوت في عام 658 هجري /1260 ميلادي و أيضا هاجموا بشدة القلاع الصليبية في فلسطين و في النهاية طردوهم كليا من عكا في فلسطين في عام 690 هجري / 1291 ميلادي. و على الجبهات الدبلوماسية و الاقتصادية بنت السلطنة المملوكية روابط قوية مع كل القوى الإسلامية المهمة و أيضا الشرق الأقصى و البيزنطيين و فرنسا و كاستيل و صقلية و جنوة و فينيسيا. \nوأصبحت القاهرة نقطة التقاء تجارية للعالم و تم تبادل البضائع الأجنبية من الشرق و الغرب هناك مما أعطى مجالا رحبا للفنانين المحليين الذي انعكس في أعمالهم التي أنتجوها. \nوقد كان المماليك مدافعين بارزين عن الإسلام و الحامين الملتزمين بمدنه المقدسة و قد استعادوا موقع الخلافة في القاهرة في عام 659 هجري / 1261 ميلادي بعد زوال موقعها الأصلي في بغداد و خصصوا الكثير من اهتمامهم ببناء مساجد رائعة و المدارس و الأوقاف في المدن مثل القاهرة ، القدس ، حلب ودمشق. \nإن أفضل الفنانيين والحرفيين كانوا يستدعون ليزودوا هذه الأبنية بالتخطيط و التزيين الهندسي مع الأثاث الديني و المصاحف و السجاجيد و الأدوات و قد تم رعاية القطع المصممة لتعكسس الروعة الرسمية و الخاصة للسلطان المملوكي وبلاطه. \nإن انحطاط العصر المملوكي أتى مع اكتشاف طرق التجارة الزمن فإن القاجاريين وحّدوا إيران وشجعوا وحفزوا على إحداث ابتكارات جديدة في التكنولوجيا (مثل التلغراف والسكك الحديدية). ووقد ازدهرت الفنون أيضا في عهدهم مثل التصوير والحفر على الحجر lithography مع أشكال مبتكرة للبورتريه والرسم الزيتي والتي أتت من الغرب والتي كانت تعتمد بحماس من قبل الفنانين والرعاة كذلك. \nوفي خلال 140 عاما التي دام فيها حكم القاجاريين فقد تحولت ايران من تجمعات قبلية بسيطة إلى دولة حكم مركزية وأخيرا برلمانية دستورية وفي الوعي التاريخي للناس فإن القاجاريين استحضروا روح العصر الصفوي المجيد بكل مجده وعظمته. \nلقد كان أو شاه قاجاري هو آغا محمد شاه (1795-98) وقد كان اهتمامه الأكبر في وقت حكمه هو تعزيز وضع البلاد ضد مناوئيها من زند شيراز (1750-94). وقد هزم محمد شاه الأمير الزندي لطفي علي خان وأخيرا تم اغتيال آغا محمد شاه من قبل أحد حاشيته في مايو / أيار 1796 وقد خلفه ابن أخيه بابا خان والذي توج وأعطي اسم فتح علي شاه. \nوقد حكم فتح علي شاه من 1797 إلى 1834 وقد عمل على إعادة صياغة الصورة الامبراطورية القاجارية وتمييزها عن أسلافها. وفي 37 عاما التي هي فترة حكم فتح علي شاه فقد وحّد مواطنيه وعمل بشكل أفضل على تنمية إدارة البلاد. وقد كانت هذه المرة الأولى التي تحدث بها حرب بين الروس والفرس عندما تم التنافس على السيطرة على جورجيا وأذربيجان. ولم يكن الوضع السياسي مع روسيا وبريطانيا جيدا دائما وقد نشبت حرب روسية – فارسية ثانية في صيف عام 1826 في القوقاز حيث قاتل المسلمون ضد الروس. وبعد هذه الحرب كان إيران قادرة على استعادة كل أراضيها المسلوبة. \nوقد توفي فتح علي شاه في عام 1834 وقد خلفه حفيده محمد شاه (1834-48) ولكن خلافة محمد شاه أدت إلى صراع مع عميّه ظل السلطان، حاكم طرهان وفارمان فارما في فرس . وقد كان كل منهما يعتقد أنه يستحق أن يخلف فتح علي شاه. وقد اعترفت روسيا وبريطانيا بمحمد شته كخليفة للعرش وقد ساعده وقدم له النصح أبو القاسم قائم مقام وهو وزير أبيه. وقد توج في النهاية كحاكم ذو سيادة في احتفال أقيم في طهران وقد توفي محمد شاه في سبتمبر / أيلول 1848 وقد كان عهده مليئا بالحروب حيث قضى جله يتصارع مع بريطانيا وقد خلفه ابنه ناصر الدين ميرزا. \nوفي عمر 17 عاما فقد تم تنصيب ناصر الدين ميرزا (1848-96) على العرش وقد بدأ بإحداث تغييرات وتحدث العاصمة طهران. وقد كان مستشاره مير تقي خان أمير نظام (الذي عرف لاحقا بأمير كبير) والذي عمل كصدر أعظم له. وقد نفذ أمير كبير الإصلاحات لتحديث وتطوير وإصلاح الدولة. ولقد أجرى أيضا اصطلاحات على النظام المالي والعسكري. ولكن إنجازه الأكبر كان تأسيس دار الفنون ( دار العلوم) وهي إحدى أولى المدارس في إيران التي تعتمد على النموذج الغربي في التعليم. وقد اعتبرها كأساس تدريبي للعاملين مستقبلا في مجال الخدمة المدنية و العسكرية. \nوبعد وفاة نصر الدين شاه فقد أصبح مظفر الدين شاه (1896-1906) الحاكم الجديد في عمر 43 عاما. وقد كان يعرف بالحاكم الضعيف وكان يعتبر أكثر تسامحا مع مواطنيه من والده. وإحدى إنجازاته كانت اصدار فرمان ينص على أنه أسس المجلس ( هيئة استشارية) وأنه يجب إجراء الانتخابات. وقد أجريت الانتخابات في طهران بسرعة وافتتح أول مجلس من قبل مظفر الدين شاه في 7 أكتوبر 1906. وأول عمل قام به المجلس كان وضع دستور وهو الأول في تاريخ إيران. \nوقد انجز هذا ووقع من قبل الحاكم مظفر الدين شاه قبل خمسة أيام من وفاته في فبراير 1907 وقد خلفه ابنه محمد علي شاه. \nوقد كان محمد علي شاه (1907-09) بعمر 35 عاما وقت توليه الحكم وقد تم تربيته من قبل معلم روسي مما جعله غير مقبول لدى الإيرانيين الذي لاحقا انقلبوا عليه. وقد حاول الشاه تنفيذ انقلاب في ديسمبر 1907 لكنه فشل. وقد تم انتقاده من قبل المسؤولين و العامة في المجلس وفي يوليو 1907 فقد تنازل عن العرش وتركه لابنه البالغ 12 سنة من العمر أحمد ميرزا. \nعندما أصبح أحمد شاه (1909-25) الحاكم القاجاري فإن المنطقة الشمالية من البلاد كانت تحت الاحتلال وقد كان الاتفاق الروسي البريطاني لعام 1907 قد قضى أن وزارء كلا البلدين يتدخلون في الشؤون الداخلية لإيران وبشكل خاص في تسمية أعضاء الوزارة وخلال الحرب العالمية الأولى (1914-18) فقد تم محاصرة إيران من قبل روسيا ، بريطانيا والقوات العثمانية. و لم يتمكن أحمد شاه من التعافي من هذه النكسة. وفي الانقلاب الذي تم في فبراير 1921 فإن رضا خان (الذي عرف لاحقا برضا شاه بهلوي ) تم انتخابه ليحل محل أحمد شاه والذي خلع من قبل المجلس. \n \nBibliography \n• Algar, Hamid, Religion and State in Iran 1785-1906 - The Role of the Ulama in the Qajar Period, Berkeley, CA: University of California Press, 1980. \n• Daryaee T. They came to power in the late 14th century AD and served under Timur (AD 1370–1405). Under the leader Uzun Hasan (AD 1457–1478) they went on to rule a territory stretching from eastern Anatolia (AD 1378–1503) to western Iran Khurasan, as well as Iraq and the Persian Gulf. Ultimately, they were defeated by the Ottomans and the Safavids. \n \nThe first Aq Qoyunlu leader was Tur-Ali (b. Pahlavan), in power in the decade of Hegira 740–50/AD 1339–49 during a time of armed clashes with forces from Trebizond. To regain peace, in Hegira 753/AD 1352, Tur-Ali’s son Fakr-al-din Qutlu was married to the sister of Trebizond’s ruler Alexios III (AD 1349–90). Trebizond was safe from Aq Qoyunlu’s attacks until it fell to the Ottomans in Hegira 865/AD 1461. Tur-Ali died sometime between Hegira 753/AD 1352 and Hegira 764/AD 1363 and his successor Qutlu died in Hegira 791/AD 1389. Leadership was passed on to Qutlu’s son Ahmad, who was later replaced by his brother Qara Yoluz (or Yülük) Otman Beg, or Qara Otman. \n \nQara Otman joined the ruler Timur in Hegira 802/AD1399–1400, and participated in his campaigns in Sivas and the battle of Ankara (Hegira 804/AD 1402). In return, Timur made Qara Otman an amir and an official leader of the Aq Qoyunlu tribe. The confederation of the Aq Qoyunlu also acquired the fortress city of Amed (Diyar Bakr), which would continue to be their capital for seventy years. \n \nBy the time of Qara Otman’s death in Hegira 839/AD 1435, the Aq Qoyunlu, allied with the Timurids, had become an unquestioned authority in the region of Armenia and Diyar Bakr. Qara Otman had chosen Ali as his heir, however this new successor was not able to retain power in the face of his male relatives and renounced his position of leadership in Hegira 841/AD 1438–39 and went into self-imposed exile in Egypt. Ali’s brother Hamza was a powerful leader of the Aq Qoyunlu for a time, until his death in Hegira 848/AD 1444. \n \nIt was Uzun Hasan (Long Hasan) under whose rule the Aq Qoyunlu were reunified and gained strength. In Hegira 862/AD 1458, he raided Georgia and came to be known as ghazi (“fighter for the faith”), and renewed the Aq Qoyulu’s friendship with the house of Trebizond. He also married the Komnenian princess Theodora, forming an alliance that grew in strength in the face of threat from the Ottomans. However, the Ottomans were superior in weaponry and strength. Due to this military imbalance, Uzun Hasan refrained from going to war with them. In the summer of Hegira 873/AD 1468, Uzun Hasan defeated the Qara Qoyunlu and conquered Azerbaijan. \n \nThe Timurid ruler Abu Sa’id had been ruling Herat since Hegira 855/AD 1451 when he was taken prisoner and put to death by Uzun Hasan. Now that his adversaries had been eliminated, Uzun Hasan marched to western Iran and annexed the Iranian provinces up to Khorasan and transferred his government to Tabriz. However, he failed to assert his rule over the Timurids of Khorasan. In late Hegira 875/early AD 1471, Uzun Hasan moved his garrison from Khorasan to the western frontier, which led to friendly relations between Tabriz and Herat. However, in Qaraman his interests conflicted with those of the Ottomans and Mamluks. \n \nUzun Hasan died on the eve of Sawwal, Hegira 882/AD 5–6 January 1478. Before his death he reacted to the defiance of his son Ogurlu Mohammad by designating Ogurlu’s brother Kalil as his heir. However, Kalil was soon killed in Rabiʿa II, Hegira 883/AD July 1478 in an armed struggle with his fourteen-year-old brother Ya’qub and his supporters, near Koy. Ya’qub came to power and his reign lasted for a period of twelve years. He died mysteriously on I1 Safar AH 896/AD 24 December 1491. During his reign he had convinced Kalil’s supporters to come to his side. However, Ya’qub had no interest in the religious sentiments of the masses and their practices, alienating large groups of his followers, particularly the Turkmans. As a consequence of Ya’qub’s death, the Aq Qoyunlu were engaged in constant power struggles. \n \nYa’qub’s eight-year-old son Baysongor was crowned in Hegira 896/AD 1491 under the guidance of Ṣufi Kalil Beg Mawsellu. However, he was expelled from Tabriz in Rajab, Hegira 897/AD May 1492 by his cousin Rostam (descended from Maqṣūd, descendent of Uzun Ḥasan), who was supported by the Pornak and Qajar tribes. Baysongor was killed in Hegira 898/AD 1493. Rostam attempted to create a reconciliation between the religious establishment and the popular Sufi orders. \n \nIn Hegira 902/AD 1497, Rostam was ousted by his cousin Govde (“dwarf”) Aḥmad (b. Ogurlu Moḥammad), who had returned from his exile in Ottoman territory. Ahmad’s politics brought about a revolt by the amirs, who defeated and killed him on Rabīʿa II, Hegira 903/AD December 1497. Rather than a style *per se*, it is the expression of a trend towards Islamic forms. This 'mudéjarism' emerged as the Reconquista moved south and contact with the Islamic world became closer. \nThe reason for this assimilation was the fascination the Muslim world exerted on the Christian aristocracy (and on Christian artists and artisans); the extraordinary luxury that Muslim rulers enjoyed was in complete contrast to the sober conditions in which Christian noblemen lived. \nThe origins of this artistic association go back to the 12th century, but it was with the conquest of Córdoba (1236) and Seville (1248) that it became widespread, culminating 150 years later with the conquest of Granada and an outpouring of 'mudéjarism' in civil and religious architecture. Alfonso XI and Pedro I of Castile (14th century), Pedro de Luna (Antipope Benedict XIII, late 14th–early 15th centuries), the Catholic Kings (15th century) and D. Manuel I of Portugal (late 15th–early 16th centuries) were the driving forces in this centuries-long process. \nUnder the Christians, prestigious Mudéjar artists, occasionally organised into itinerant groups, worked for the élite, and the most exquisite Mudéjar pieces were exported en masse. Mudéjar artisans also formed renowned guilds of carpenters, bricklayers, saddlers and potters, among other trades. \nPolitical and aesthetic reasons were at the root of the decline of Mudéjar art in the 16th century. On one hand, the Counter-Reformation made all non-Christians undesirable (it was the time of the Inquisition and of the last expulsions of Muslims and Jews), and on the other, the models of the Italian Renaissance were beginning to appear. However, this did not prevent a popular Mudéjar style from surviving until the advent of Baroque.","date_description_ah":"AH 6–8th centuries","date_description_ad":"AD 12th–14th centuries"},"ab22ae48-7fde-5229-a684-189558585904":{"name":"Nasrids","also_known_as":"Banu'l-Ahmar","area":"Granada","history":"When the Almohad Caliph al-Ma'mun, enthroned in Seville in AH 624 / AD 1227, returned to Morocco, a member of the vizier Banu al-Ahmar family, Muhammad bin Yusuf bin Nasr, proclaimed himself king (627 / 1230) founding the Nasrid dynasty, which ruled Granada until 897 / 1492. \nHe stayed in power by paying an annual tribute to the king of Castile and assisted passively in the breathtaking progress of the Christian Reconquista, with the surrender of Córdoba (633 / 1236), Jaen and Arjona (643 / 1246), and Seville (645 / 1248). \nThanks to their plotting and dealing and the occasional military support of the Marinids, the Nasrids experienced a veritable golden age, the most stunning examples of which being the Alhambra and the Generalife. Babur, the founder of the Mughal Dynasty who ruled from 1526 to 1530, was of Timurid–Mongolian heritage. On his paternal side he was a descendant of the warlord Amir Timur or Tamerlane, a fierce warrior of the late 14th and early 15th centuries, and on the maternal side of the family he was a descendant of Genghis Khan. Babur conquered a large territory extending from central Asia to the shores of the Mediterranean. \n \nBy the late 15th century, the Mughals had begun patronizing the arts, commissioning the construction of imposing architecture and making grand illuminated manuscripts. They were considered refined and sophisticated. It was in 1526 at the battle of Panipat that Babur had a huge victory; he conquered northern India up to the Gangetic Plain after a struggle with Afghans, the Lodi Sultan of Delhi and the Rajputs under Rana Sanga of Mewar. In order to legitimise his rule, Babur went on to build three mosques. \nBabur died in 1530 and was succeeded by this son, Humayun, who inherited a territory that was yet to be consolidated. After being defeated by the Afghan chief of Bihar, Shir Shah Suri, Humayun was driven to the Persian court of the Iranian-Safavid court ruler, Shah Tahmasp I. With the help of the Persian emperor, he reconquered northern India in 1555. He died in 1556, in Delhi. \n \nHumayun’s son, Akbar, acceded to the throne at the young age of 12 years, and he went on to rule for nearly 50 years (1556–1605). Akbar is considered a very important ruler of the Mughal dynasty. Most significant were his many achievements; he set up an enduring foundation for Mughal governance, created inclusive policies and adopted an attitude of tolerance towards non-Muslims. This method of governing made him an amicable ruler and created a state that was syncretic in character. \n \nBy the time Akbar passed away in 16o5, he had built a consolidated empire that would flourish under the rule of his son, Jahangir, and grandson, Shah Jahan. Jahangir followed the practices that Akbar had commenced during his reign. He had acceded to the throne in 1602 after clashing with his father and masterminding the death of Akbar’s close advisor, Abu al-Fazl, who he thought was against Jahangir becoming the heir. In 1611, he married a woman named Nur Jahan. She was a powerful, intelligent person who took the reins of the empire when Jahangir was ill. \n \nDuring its last phase, the Mughal empire was ruled by Nur Jahan and her family. One of these rulers was Prince Khurram, later known as Shah Jahan, a well-known military strategist. He was the one responsible for Jahangir’s victory during his reign. In 1614 he led a campaign against the Sisodiya Rajput fortress of Chittor and forced Rana Amar Singh to surrender. Jahangir was pleased with this victory and considered Khurram as heir apparent. \n \nUnder Shah Jahan’s rule, the Mughal empire was prosperous, wealthy and internationally renowned. In the first 12 years of his reign, Shah Jahan pursued several military campaigns in a bid to subdue recalcitrant rulers. At the same time, he conquered territory in eastern India, Sind and the northwest. In 1636, he made a breakthrough in his campaign in order to increase territorial expansion into the Deccan. The Mughals signed a treaty with two dynasties of the Deccan, namely, Adil Shah of Bijapur and the Qutb Shahs of Golkonda. This resulted in 20 years of the Mughals’ peaceful coexistence with the Deccan Sultanates. \n \nIn 1658, Shah Jahan’s son, Aurangzeb, ruled the Mughal empire from 1658 to 1707. He became the victorious leader after a battle of succession in which two of his brothers were killed, one brother was exiled to Burma and his father was imprisoned. His reign lasted for 49 years. He was known as Alamgir, the seizer of the world. His top achievement was to expand Mughal territory all the way to the Deccan. He subjugated the sultans of the Deccan and brought about a massive expansion of the empire. \n \nAurangzeb has been considered an orthodox Muslim who broke away from the liberal traditions of his predecessors. Contrary to the image that has been painted, Aurangzeb was an Indian ruler who strove throughout his life to preserve and expand the Mughal empire, gain political power, and rule with his own vision of justice. \n \nThe court of the Mughal successors was known for its aristocratic high culture. These rulers enjoyed entertainment in the form of music and poetry, commissioned miniature paintings and objects, and supported the construction of monumental architecture for the imperial Mughal court. \n \nFrom 1707 to 1857, however, the Mughal dynasty was in a period of decline. Aurangzeb’s death brought with it much turmoil due to courtiers vying with each other to gain power. Bahadur Shah I (1643–1712) attempted to alter the court’s religious policies and reform its administration. After his death in 1712, the empire was involved in feuds over who would be the next successor. He was ultimately succeeded by the 20th ruler of the Mughal dynasty, Bahadur Shah Zafar or Bahadur Shah II (1837–57). However, the last Mughal emperor had no power over the kingdom; rather, he was an emperor in title alone. Throughout the 18th century north India was at the mercy of indigenous and foreign power. The arrival of the East India Company marked the end of Mughal rule. By this time the Mughal empire existed in name only, while the East India Company governed the empire. \n \nBibliography \n• Asher, Catherine B. and Talbot, Cynthia, India before Europe, UK: Cambridge University Press, 2006. \n• Koch, Ebba, Mughal Architecture, UK: Oxford University Press, 1991. \n• Richards, John F., Gordon Johnson, The Mughal Empire, UK: Cambridge University Press, 1993. \n• Truschke, Audrey, Aurangzeb: the Man and the Myth, India: Penguin Random House India Pvt. The literal meaning of the word *mamluk* in Arabic is 'owned', but in common use it donates a military slave, and it was indeed military slaves, acquired from the Eurasian steppes through the Black Sea ports by the last Ayyubid sultan Najm al-Din, who were to launch the Mamluk regime and carry it to unforeseen glory. \n*Mamluk* slaves came from different ethnic groups, but the majority were Turks and Circassians from the Caucasus. Acquired to become loyal fighters for the cause of the sultan, they were instructed in the principles of Islam and learnt extensive cavalry skills and fighting techniques. Their superior military abilities soon enabled the Mamluks to establish their own rule and build an empire that was to control Egypt, the Levant and the holy Muslim cities in Hijaz for well over two centuries. \nThe Mamluk sultans came to be distinguished in two main lines: the Bahri Mamluks, so called because these guards of the Ayyubids originally had their barracks on the island of al-Rawda \\[Rhoda\\] in the Nile (al-Bahr), ruled from AH 648 to 792 / AD 1250–1390. On the diplomatic and economic fronts, the Mamluk Sultanate built strong ties with all the important Muslim powers as well as the Far East, Byzantium, France, Castile, Sicily, Genoa and Venice. Cairo became the trade hub of the world, and the exotic goods from East and West exchanged there provided ample inspiration for local artisans and were reflected in the work they produced. \nThe Mamluks were outstanding defenders of Islam and committed protectors of its Holy Cities. They restored the Caliphate in Cairo in 659 / 1261 after the devastation of its original seat in Baghdad and devoted much of their interest to the building of splendid mosques, *madrasas* (religious schools) and *waqfs* (religious foundations) in cities such as Cairo, Jerusalem, Aleppo and Damascus. The best artists and craftsmen were called upon to provide these buildings with calligraphic and geometric decoration, with religious furniture, Qur'ans, carpets and utensils. Patronage was also given to objects designed to reflect the official and private splendour of the Mamluk sultan and his court. \nThe decline of Mamluk supremacy came with the discovery of new trade routes around the Cape of Good Hope and the expansion of Ottoman power, which eventually was to extinguish the Mamluk Sultanate in 923 / 1517.","date_description_ah":"AH 648–923","date_description_ad":"AD 1250–1517"},"d9aed700-4f88-5eae-b943-d855a671e948":{"name":"Qajar","also_known_as":"","area":"Persia (Iran), Georgia and Armenia (subsequently lost to the Russian Protectorate and ultimately the British Empire)","history":"The Qajars were of Turkoman origin, based near Astarabad in northeastern Iran. The Qajar dynasty ruled Iran from 1785 to 1925. During this time, the Qajars unified Iran, promoting and encouraging new innovations in technology (such as the telegraph and railroads). The arts also flourished under their reign; photography and lithography, along with innovative forms of portraiture and oil painting brought from the West, were enthusiastically adopted by artists and patrons alike. In the 140 years that the Qajar dynasty ruled, Iran was transformed from feuding tribal confederations to a centralized monarchy and finally to a constitutional parliament. In the historical consciousness of the people, the Qajars invoked the glorious Safavid era with all its might and splendour. \n \nThe first Qajar shah was Agha Mohammad Shah (1795–98). His main concern at the time of his rule was to consolidate the country’s position against its opponents, the Zands of Shiraz (1750–94). He defeated the last Zand prince, Lotf Ali Khan. Finally, Agha Mohammad Khan was assassinated by one of his attendants in May 1796 and was succeeded by his nephew, Baba Khan, who was crowned and given the name Fath ‘Ali Shah. \nFath ‘Ali Shah ruled from 1797 to 1834. He worked on redefining the Qajar imperial image and distinguishing it from that of his predecessors. In the 37 years that Fath ‘Ali Shah reigned, he united his fellow citizens and worked to better the growing administration of the country. This was the time of the first Russo-Persian war, when Iran’s territories of Georgia and Azerbaijan were taken by rivals. The political situation with Russia and Britain was not always agreeable. A second Russo-Persian war began in the summer of 1826 in the Caucasus where Muslims fought against the Russians. After this war Iran was able to recover all its lost territories. \n \nFath ‘Ali Shah died in 1834 and was succeeded by his grandson, Mohammad Shah (1834–48). However, Mohammad Shah’s accession led to a feud with two of his uncles, Zel al-Soltan, governor of Tehran, and Farman Farma in Fars. Each of them believed that they deserved to be successors of Fath ‘Ali Shah. Russia and Britain recognized Mohammad Shah as the successor, and he was helped and advised by Abol Qasem Qa’em Maqam, his father’s minister. He was ultimately was crowned sovereign in a ceremony held in Tehran. Mohammed Shah died in September 1848. His reign had been far from peaceful as most of it was spent struggling with Britain. He was succeeded by his son, Naser al-Din Mirza. \n \nAt the age of 17 years, Naser al-Din Shah (1848–96) acceded to the throne. He initiated change and modernized the capital city of Tehran. His guide was Mir Taqi Khan Amir Nezam (later known as Amir Kabir) who served as Sadr Azam. Amir Kabir implemented reforms to modernise, develop and reform the state. He also undertook to reform the financial and military systems. His most notable achievement, however, was the establishment of Dar al-Funun (Abode of Sciences), one of the first schools in Iran to be based on a Western model of teaching. He considered it a good training ground for future civil servants and military men. \n \nAfter the death of Naser al-Din Shah, Mozaffar al-Din Shah (1896–1906) became the new sovereign at 43 years of age. He was known as a weak ruler and was considered more lenient with his subjects compared to his father. One of his achievements was issuing the firman, a royal edict stating that he granted a Majles (consultative assembly) and that elections would be held. The elections in Tehran were speedily performed and the first Majles was opened by Mozaffar al-Din Shah on 7 October 1906. The first act of the Majles was to prepare a constitution - a first in Iranian history. This was accomplished and signed by the ruler Mozaffar al-Din Shah five days before his death in February 1907. He was succeeded by his son, Mohammad Ali Shah. \n \nMohammad Ali Shah (1907–09) was 35 years old at the time of his accession. He was raised by a Russian tutor, which made him unpopular with Iranian nationalists who later turned against him. The Shah attempted a coup d’état in December 1907, which failed. He was criticized by officials and the general public at the Majles. In July 1907, he abdicated the throne and left it to his 12-year-old son, Ahmad Mirza. \n \nWhen Ahmad Shah (1909–25) became the Qajar sovereign, the northern region of the country was under occupation; the Russo-British agreement of 1907 meant that the ministers of both countries interfered in the internal affairs of Iran, particularly in designating the membership of the cabinets. During the First World War (1914–18) Iran was besieged by Russian, British and Ottoman troops. Ahmed Shah could not recover from this setback. No obstante, fueron derrotados por los otomanos y los safávidas. \n \nEl primer líder de los Aq Qoyunlu fue Tur-Ali (ibn Pahlavan), quien estuvo en el poder desde 740/1339 hasta 750/1349, durante un período de enfrentamientos armados con las fuerzas de Trebisonda. En 752/1352, con el fin de restaurar la paz, el hijo de Tur-Ali, Fajr al-Din, se casó con la hermana de Alejo III de Trebisonda (1349-1390). A cambio, Temür nombró a Qara Osman emir y líder oficial de la tribu Aq Qoyunlu. La confederación Aq Qoyunlu también adquirió la ciudad fortaleza de Amed (Diyarbakır), la cual permanecería como su capital por setenta años. \n \nPara el momento de la muerte de Qara Osman, en el año 839/1435, los Aq Qoyunlu, aliados con los timúridas, se habían convertido en una autoridad incuestionable en la región de Armenia y Diyarbakır. Si bien Qara Osman había elegido a Ali como su heredero, este nuevo sucesor no fue capaz de conservar el poder frente a sus familiares varones, por lo que renunció a su posición de líder en 841/1438–1439 y se fue a un exilio autoimpuesto a Egipto. Además, se casó con la princesa comnena Teodora, formando así una alianza que se consolidó ante la amenaza de los otomanos. No obstante, los otomanos tenían un armamento y una fuerza superiores; debido a este desequilibrio militar, Uzún Hasán se abstuvo de iniciar una guerra con ellos. En el verano de 873/1468, Uzún Hasán derrotó a los Qara Qoyunlu y conquistó Azerbaiyán. \n \nEl gobernante timúrida Abu Said gobernó Herat desde 855/1451, hasta que fue tomado prisionero y ejecutado por Uzún Hasán. Con sus adversarios eliminados, Uzún Hasan marchó al oeste de Irán, donde procedió a tomar las provincias iraníes hasta Jurasán y a trasladar su gobierno a Tabriz; sin embargo, no logró imponer su dominio sobre los timúridas de Jurasán. A finales de 875/principios de 1471, Uzún Hasán trasladó su guarnición desde Jurasán a la frontera oeste, lo que propició relaciones amistosas entre Tabriz y Herat. Desafortunadamente, sus intereses en Qaraman colisionaron con los de los otomanos y los mamelucos. \n \nUzún Hasán murió en la víspera de shawwal de 882/5–6 de enero de 1478. Poco antes de su muerte, reaccionó ante el desacato de su hijo, Ogurlu Mohammad, nombrando a Kalil, hermano de Ogurlu, heredero. A pesar de ello, Kalil fue asesinado poco tiempo después, en rabi Al-Thani de 883/julio de 1478, en una disputa en armas con su hermano Yaqub, de catorce años, y sus partidarios, cerca de Khoy. Yaqub subió al poder y su reinado duró un período de doce años, muriendo de forma misteriosa el 1 de safar de 896/24 diciembre de 1491. Durante su reinado había convencido a los partidarios de Kalil para unirse a él; sin embargo, Yaqub no estaba interesado en los sentimientos religiosos de las masas o sus prácticas, lo que distanció a grandes grupos de sus seguidores, especialmente a los turcomanos. El “mudejarismo” surgió a medida que la Reconquista avanzaba al sur y aumentaba el contacto con el mundo islámico de los reinos cristianos. \nLa razón para esta fusión fue la fascinación que el mundo musulmán producía en la aristocracia cristiana (y por sus artistas y artesanos); la suntuosidad de la que disfrutaban los dirigentes musulmanes contrastaba con las condiciones austeras en las que vivían los nobles cristianos. \nLos orígenes de esta asociación artística datan del siglo XII, pero fue tras la conquista de Córdoba (1236) y de Sevilla (1248) cuando se difundió, culminando 150 años después, con la conquista de Granada y el florecimiento del mudejarismo en la arquitectura civil y religiosa. Por el lado paterno, era descendiente del señor de la guerra Amir Timur o Tamerlane, un feroz guerrero de finales del siglo XIV y principios del XV, y por el lado materno de la familia era descendiente de Genghis Khan. Babur conquistó un gran territorio que se extendía desde Asia central hasta las costas del Mediterráneo. \n \nA finales del siglo XV, los Mogoles habían comenzado a patrocinar las artes, encargando la construcción de una arquitectura imponente y haciendo grandes manuscritos iluminados. Fueron considerados refinados y sofisticados. Fue en 1526 en la batalla de Panipat cuando Babur obtuvo una gran victoria; conquistó el norte de la India hasta la llanura del Ganges después de una lucha con los Afganos, el Lodi Sultán de Delhi y los Rajputs bajo Rana Sanga de Mewar. Para legitimar su gobierno, Babur pasó a construir tres mezquitas. \n \nBabur murió en 1530 y fue sucedido por este hijo, Humayun, quien heredó un territorio aún por consolidar. Después de ser derrotado por el jefe Afgano de Bihar, Shir Shah Suri, Humayun fue conducido a la corte Persa del gobernante de la corte Iraní-Safawí, Shah Tahmasp I. Con la ayuda del emperador Persa, reconquistó el norte de la India en 1555. Murió en 1556, en Delhi. \n \nEl hijo de Humayun, Akbar, accedió al trono a la temprana edad de 12 años y gobernó durante casi 50 años (1556-1605). Akbar es considerado un gobernante muy importante de la dinastía Mughal. Los más significativos fueron sus muchos logros; estableció una base duradera para el gobierno de Mughal, creó políticas inclusivas y adoptó una actitud de tolerancia hacia los no musulmanes. Este método de gobernar lo convirtió en un gobernante amistoso y creó un estado de carácter sincrético. \n \nCuando Akbar falleció en 16o5, había construido un imperio consolidado que florecería bajo el gobierno de su hijo, Jahangir, y su nieto, Shah Jahan. Jahangir siguió las prácticas que Akbar había comenzado durante su reinado. Había accedido al trono en 1602 después de chocar con su padre y planear la muerte del consejero cercano de Akbar, Abu al-Fazl, quien pensaba que estaba en contra de que Jahangir se convirtiera en heredero. En 1611, se casó con una mujer llamada Nur Jahan. Era una persona poderosa e inteligente que tomó las riendas del imperio cuando Jahangir estaba enfermo. \n \nDurante su última fase, el imperio Mogol fue gobernado por Nur Jahan y su familia. Uno de estos gobernantes fue el príncipe Khurram, más tarde conocido como Shah Jahan, un conocido estratega militar. Fue el responsable de la victoria de Jahangir durante su reinado. En 1614 dirigió una campaña contra la fortaleza Sisodiya Rajput de Chittor y obligó a Rana Amar Singh a rendirse. Jahangir estaba complacido con esta victoria y consideró a Khurram como el heredero aparente. \n \nBajo el gobierno de Shah Jahan, el imperio mogol era próspero, rico y de renombre internacional. En los primeros 12 años de su reinado, Shah Jahan llevó a cabo varias campañas militares en un intento por someter a los gobernantes recalcitrantes. Al mismo tiempo, conquistó territorios en el este de la India, Sind y el Noroeste. En 1636, hizo un gran avance en su campaña para aumentar la expansión territorial en el Deccan. Los Mogoles firmaron un tratado con dos dinastías de Deccan, a saber, Adil Shah de Bijapur y Qutb Shahs de Golkonda. Esto resultó en 20 años de coexistencia pacífica de los Mogoles con los sultanatos de Deccan. \n \nEn 1658, el hijo de Shah Jahan, Aurangzeb, gobernó el imperio Mogol de 1658 a 1707. Se convirtió en el líder victorioso después de una batalla de sucesión en la que murieron dos de sus hermanos, un hermano fue exiliado a Birmania y su padre fue encarcelado. Su reinado duró 49 años. Fue conocido como Alamgir, el conquistador del mundo. Su mayor logro fue expandir el territorio mogol hasta Deccan. Subyugó a los sultanes del Deccan y provocó una expansión masiva del imperio. \n \nAurangzeb ha sido considerado un Musulmán ortodoxo que rompió con las tradiciones liberales de sus predecesores. Al contrario de la imagen que se ha pintado, Aurangzeb fue un gobernante Indio que luchó durante toda su vida para preservar y expandir el imperio Mogol, ganar poder político y gobernar con su propia visión de la justicia. \n \nLa corte de los sucesores de Mughal era conocida por su alta cultura aristocrática. Estos gobernantes disfrutaron del entretenimiento en forma de música y poesía, encargaron pinturas y objetos en miniatura y apoyaron la construcción de arquitectura monumental para la corte imperial de Mughal. \n \nSin embargo, desde 1707 hasta 1857, la dinastía Mogol se encontraba en un período de declive. La muerte de Aurangzeb trajo consigo mucha confusión debido a que los cortesanos competían entre sí para ganar poder. Bahadur Shah I (1643-1712) intentó alterar las políticas religiosas de la corte y reformar su administración. Después de su muerte en 1712, el imperio se vio envuelto en disputas sobre quién sería el próximo sucesor. En última instancia, fue sucedido por el vigésimo gobernante de la dinastía Mogol, Bahadur Shah Zafar o Bahadur Shah II (1837-1857). Sin embargo, el último emperador Mogol no tenía poder sobre el reino; más bien, era un emperador solo en el título. A lo largo del siglo XVIII, el norte de la India estuvo a merced del poder indígena y extranjero. La llegada de la Compañía de las Indias Orientales marcó el final del gobierno de Mughal. En ese momento, el imperio Mogol existía sólo en nombre, mientras que la Compañía de las Indias Orientales gobernaba el imperio. \n \nBibliografía \n● Asher, Catherine B. and Talbot, Cynthia, India before Europe, UK: Cambridge University Press, 2006. \n● Koch, Ebba, Mughal Architecture, UK: Oxford University Press, 1991. \n● Richards, John F., Gordon Johnson, The Mughal Empire, UK: Cambridge University Press, 1993. \n● Truschke, Audrey, Aurangzeb: the Man and the Myth, India: Penguin Random House India Pvt. Adquiridos para ser convertidos en guerreros leales a la causa del sultán, fueron instruidos según los principios islámicos y cultivaron enormes habilidades en caballería y técnicas de combate. Las habilidades militares superiores de los Mamelucos pronto les permitieron establecer su propio gobierno y construir un imperio que controlaría Egipto, el Levante y las ciudades musulmanas sagradas en Hiyaz por más de dos siglos. \nLos sultanes mamelucos lograron distinguirse por dos linajes principales. Los Mamelucos de Bahri, conocidos así debido a que estos guardias de los Ayyubíes se acuartelaron originalmente en la isla Roda en el Nilo (al-Bahr), gobernaron desde el 648 al 792 de la Hégira / 1250 - 1390 d.C. Los Mamelucos Bury, llamados así porque el Sultán Qalawun acuarteló a sus guardias en las torres (*burg*) de Cairo, gobernaron desde el 784 al 923 de la Hégira / 1382 - 1517 d.C. \nLos Mamelucos no solo acabaron con la amenaza de los mongoles de una vez por todas gracias a su victoria en la Batalla de Ain Yalut en Palestina en el 658 de la Hégira / 1260 d.C., sino que también atacaron ferozmente los castillos de los Cruzados en Palestina y finalmente los expulsaron de Acre, Palestina, en el 690 de la Hégira / 1291 d.C. En cuanto a diplomacia y economía, el sultanato mameluco creó fuertes lazos con todas las potencias musulmanas importantes así como con el Lejano Oriente, Bizancio, Francia, Castilla, Sicilia, Génova y Venecia. El Cairo llegó a ser el eje comercial del mundo y los productos exóticos de Oriente y Occidente que allí se comerciaban inspiraron enormemente a los artesanos locales, lo cual se reflejó en sus obras. \nLos Mamelucos fueron notables defensores del Islam y dedicados protectores de sus Ciudades Sagradas. Restauraron el califato en El Cairo en el 659 de la Hégira / 1261 d.C. tras la destrucción de su sede original en Bagdad. Dedicaron mucho interés a la construcción de espectaculares mezquitas, *madrasas* (escuelas religiosas) y *waqfs* (fundaciones religiosas) en ciudades como El Cairo, Jerusalén, Alepo y Damasco. Los mejores artistas y artesanos fueron convocados para decorar estas construcciones con caligrafía, geometría, mobiliario religioso, libros del Corán, alfombras y utensilios. También se les encargó diseñar objetos que reflejaran el esplendor oficial y privado del sultán mameluco y su corte. \nLa supremacía de los Mamelucos comenzó a ir en declive con el descubrimiento de nuevas rutas comerciales alrededor del Cabo de Buena Esperanza y la expansión de los Otomanos, que finalmente acabarían con el sultanato mameluco en el 923 de la Hégira / 1517 d.C.","date_description_ah":"648–923 de la Hégira","date_description_ad":"1250–1517 d.C."},"d9aed700-4f88-5eae-b943-d855a671e948":{"name":"Qajar","also_known_as":"","area":"Persia (Irán), Georgia y Armenia (posteriormente perdidas ante el Protectorado Ruso y finalmente el Imperio Británico).","history":"Los Qajar eran de origen Turcomano, con base cerca de Astarabad en el noreste de Irán. La dinastía Qajar gobernó Irán desde 1785 hasta 1925. Durante este tiempo, los Qajar unificaron Irán, promoviendo y alentando nuevas innovaciones en tecnología (como el telégrafo y los ferrocarriles). Las artes también florecieron bajo su reinado; La fotografía y la litografía, junto con formas innovadoras de retrato y pintura al óleo traídas de Occidente, fueron adoptadas con entusiasmo tanto por artistas como por patrocinadores. En los 140 años que gobernó la dinastía Qajar, Irán se transformó de confederaciones tribales enfrentadas a una monarquía centralizada y finalmente a un parlamento constitucional. En la conciencia histórica de la gente, los Qajars invocaron la gloriosa era Safavid con todo su poder y esplendor. \nEl primer Sha Qajar fue Agha Mohammad Shah (1795-1798). Su principal preocupación en el momento de su gobierno era consolidar la posición del país frente a sus oponentes, los Zands de Shiraz (1750-1794). Derrotó al último príncipe de Zand, Lotf Ali Khan. Finalmente, Agha Mohammad Khan fue asesinado por uno de sus asistentes en mayo de 1796 y fue sucedido por su sobrino, Baba Khan, quien fue coronado y recibió el nombre de Fath 'Ali Shah. \n \nFath 'Ali Shah gobernó desde 1797 hasta 1834. Trabajó para redefinir la imagen imperial de Qajar y distinguirla de la de sus predecesores. En los 37 años que reinó Fath 'Ali Shah, unió a sus conciudadanos y trabajó para mejorar la creciente administración del país. Este fue el momento de la primera guerra Ruso-Persa, cuando los rivales tomaron los territorios de Irán, Georgia y Azerbaiyán. La situación política con Rusia y Gran Bretaña no siempre fue agradable. Una segunda guerra Ruso-Persa comenzó en el verano de 1826 en el Cáucaso, donde los Musulmanes lucharon contra los Rusos. Después de esta guerra, Irán pudo recuperar todos sus territorios perdidos. \n \nFath 'Ali Shah murió en 1834 y fue sucedido por su nieto, Mohammad Shah (1834-1848). Sin embargo, la adhesión de Mohammad Shah provocó una disputa con dos de sus tíos, Zel al-Soltan, gobernador de Teherán, y Farman Farma en Fars. Cada uno de ellos creía que merecía ser sucesores de Fath 'Ali Shah. Rusia y Gran Bretaña reconocieron a Mohammad Shah como sucesor, y Abol Qasem Qa'em Maqam, el ministro de su padre, lo ayudó y asesoró. Finalmente, fue coronado soberano en una ceremonia celebrada en Teherán. Mohammed Shah murió en septiembre de 1848. Su reinado estuvo lejos de ser pacífico ya que la mayor parte del tiempo lo pasó luchando con Gran Bretaña. Fue sucedido por su hijo, Naser al-Din Mirza. \n \nA la edad de 17 años, Naser al-Din Shah (1848-1896) accedió al trono. Inició el cambio y modernizó la ciudad capital de Teherán. Su guía fue Mir Taqi Khan Amir Nezam (más tarde conocido como Amir Kabir) quien sirvió como Sadr Azam. Amir Kabir implementó reformas para modernizar, desarrollar y reformar el estado. También se comprometió a reformar los sistemas financiero y militar. Sin embargo, su logro más notable fue el establecimiento de Dar al-Funun (Morada de las Ciencias), una de las primeras escuelas en Irán que se basó en un modelo occidental de enseñanza. Consideraba que era un buen campo de entrenamiento para futuros funcionarios y militares. \n \nDespués de la muerte de Naser al-Din Shah, Mozaffar al-Din Shah (1896-1906) se convirtió en el nuevo soberano a los 43 años de edad. Se le conocía como un gobernante débil y se le consideraba más indulgente con sus súbditos en comparación con su padre. Uno de sus logros fue emitir el firman, un edicto real que decía que concedía un Majles (asamblea consultiva) y que se celebrarían elecciones. Las elecciones en Teherán se llevaron a cabo rápidamente y el primer Majles fue inaugurado por Mozaffar al-Din Shah el 7 de octubre de 1906. El primer acto de los Majles fue preparar una constitución, la primera en la historia de Irán. Esto fue logrado y firmado por el gobernante Mozaffar al-Din Shah cinco días antes de su muerte en febrero de 1907. Fue sucedido por su hijo, Mohammad Ali Shah. \n \nMohammad Ali Shah (1907–09) tenía 35 años en el momento de su adhesión. Fue criado por un tutor Ruso, lo que lo hizo impopular entre los nacionalistas Iraníes que luego se volvieron contra él. El Shah intentó un golpe de estado en Diciembre de 1907, que fracasó. Fue criticado por los funcionarios y el público en general en Majles. En Julio de 1907, abdicó del trono y se lo dejó a su hijo de 12 años, Ahmad Mirza. \n \nCuando Ahmad Shah (1909–25) se convirtió en soberano de Qajar, la región norte del país estaba bajo ocupación; el acuerdo Ruso-Británico de 1907 significó que los ministros de ambos países interfirieran en los asuntos internos de Irán, particularmente en la designación de los miembros de los gabinetes. Durante la Primera Guerra Mundial (1914–18) Irán fue sitiado por tropas Rusas, Británicas y Otomanas. Ahmed Shah no pudo recuperarse de este revés. Con un golpe de estado en Febrero de 1921, Reza Khan (más tarde conocido como Reza Shah Pahlavi) fue elegido para tomar el lugar de Ahmed Shah, quien fue depuesto por Majles. \n \nBibliografía \n• Algar, Hamid, Religion and State in Iran 1785-1906 - The Role of the Ulama in the Qajar Period, Berkeley, CA: University of California Press, 1980. \n• Daryaee T. En outre, il épousa la princesse comnène Théodora, formant ainsi une alliance qui monta en puissance face à la menace des Ottomans. Cependant, l’arsenal et la force des Ottomans demeuraient supérieurs. De par ce déséquilibre militaire, Ouzoun Hassan renonça à leur déclarer la guerre. Ya\\`qûb s’empara du pouvoir et régna pendant douze ans. Il mourut dans des circonstances mystérieuses le 11 safar 896 de l’hégire/le 24 décembre 1491 après J.-C. Durant son règne, il avait convaincu les partisans de Khalil de se rallier à lui. Néanmoins, Ya\\`qûb n’était nullement intéressé par les intérêts religieux du peuple et de leurs pratiques, et perdit ainsi de larges groupes de partisans, notamment les Turkmènes. À la mort de Ya\\`qûb, les Aq Qoyunlu se livrèrent à des luttes constantes pour le pouvoir. \n \nBaysonqur, le fils de Ya\\`qûb, fut couronné à l’âge de huit ans en 896 de l’hégire/1491 après J.-C., sous la tutelle de Ṣufi Kalil Beg Mawsellu. Néanmoins, il fut expulsé de Tabriz en rajab, 897 de l’hégire/mai 1492 après J.-C. par son cousin Rustam (descendant de Maksud, descendant d’Ouzoun Hassan), qui était soutenu par les tribus Pornak et Kadjar. Baysonqur fut tué en 898 de l’hégire/1493 après J.-C. Rustam tenta de réconcilier l’ordre religieux et les ordres soufis populaires. \n \nEn 902 de l’hégire/1497 après J.-C., Rustam fut destitué par son cousin Ahmad Gövde (“nain”) (fils d’Ughurlu Muhammad), alors revenu de son exil en territoire ottoman. La politique d’Ahmad provoqua une révolte des émirs, qui le vainquirent et le tuèrent en rabia II 903 de l’hégire/en décembre 1497 après J.-C. À la mort d’Ahmad, l’empire Aq Qoyunlu continua de se désagréger. Le dernier sultan Aq Qoyunlu fut Murâd (fils de Ya\\`qûb) ; il monta sur le trône grâce à l’aide des troupes ottomanes mais fut destitué et tué par les troupes Qizilbash d’Ismaïl Ier. Les dernières tribus des Aq Qoyunlu furent absorbées dans d’autres groupes, tels que les Qizilbash. \n \nCe profil, compilé par Fiza Ishaq et traduit en français par Anne-Sophie Matichard, a été ajouté dans le cadre du projet « Explore Islamic Art Collections ».","date_description_ah":"779 – 908","date_description_ad":"1378 – 1503"},"3a5bd0e8-5c73-5d1a-8242-521f5d28c002":{"name":"Période Mudéjar","also_known_as":"","area":"Péninsule Ibérique","history":"L’art mudéjar – l’art des musulmans restés dans la péninsule Ibérique après les “reconquêtes” chrétiennes (les Mudéjars) – se caractérise par une intégration des formes artistiques et architecturales islamiques dans l’art et l’artisanat chrétiens. Mais plus qu’un style en soi, il est l’expression d’une tendance, d’une islamisation des formes, un “mudéjarisme” qui s’affirme à mesure que la Reconquista progresse vers le sud et que les contacts avec l’univers musulman se font plus étroits. \nCette assimilation s’explique par la fascination qu’exerce sur l’aristocratie chrétienne le luxe inouï dans lequel évoluaient les souverains musulmans. \nUn début de symbiose s’observe au XIIe siècle, mais c’est avec la conquête de Cordoue (1236) et de Séville (1248) que l’émulation artistique commence à se généraliser pour culminer un siècle et demi plus tard : avec la conquête de Grenade, c’est une véritable explosion de mudéjarisme qui éclate dans l’architecture civile et religieuse. Babur, le fondateur de la dynastie moghole, souverain de 1526 à 1530, était de descendance timouride-mongole. Par son père, il était le descendant du seigneur de guerre Timour, ou Tamerlan, un guerrier valeureux de la fin du 14e siècle et début du 15e ; et par sa mère, il était le descendant de Gengis Khan. Babur conquit un large territoire, s'étendant de l’Asie centrale jusqu’aux côtes méditerranéennes. \n \nÀ la fin du 15e siècle, les Moghols avaient commencé à patronner les arts, commandant l'utilisation d’une architecture imposante et faisant de grands manuscrits enluminés. Ils étaient considérés comme raffinés et sophistiqués. En 1526, à la bataille de Panipat, Babur remporta une large victoire ; il conquit le nord de l’Inde jusqu'à la plaine indo-gangétique après une lutte contre les Afghans, le sultan Lodi de Dehli et les Rajputs menés par Rana Sanga de Mewar. Pour légitimer son règne, Babur fit construire trois mosquées. \n \nBabur mourut en 1530 et fut remplacé par son fils, Humâyûn, qui hérita d’un territoire qui devait être consolidé. Après avoir été vaincu par le chef des Afghans de Bihar, Sher Shâh Sûrî, Humâyûn fut conduit devant la cour persane du souverain iranien-safavide, le Shah Tahmasp Ier. Avec l’aide de l’empereur persan, il reconquit le nord de l’Inde en 1555. Il mourut en 1556 à Delhi. \n \nLe fils de Humâyûn, Akbar, accéda au trône à l'âge de 12 ans, et régna pendant près de 50 ans (1556-1605). Akbar est considéré comme un souverain très important dans la dynastie moghole. Ses nombreuses réussites furent significatives : il posa les fondations solides pour la souveraineté moghole, créa des politiques inclusives et adopta une attitude tolérante envers les non-musulmans. Cette méthode de gouvernance fit de lui un souverain amical et créa un état purement syncrétique. \n \nAu moment de la mort d’Akbar en 1605, celui-ci avait alors bâti un empire solide qui allait prospérer sous le règne de son fils, Jahângîr, et de son petit-fils, Shâh Jahân. Jahângîr suivit les pratiques qu’Akbar avait commencé lors de son règne. Il accéda au trône en 1602 après une dispute avec son père et en orchestrant la mort du conseiller proche d’Akbar, Abul al-Fazl, dont il pensait qu’il était contre la succession par Jahângîr. En 1611, il épousa Nûr Jahân. Elle était puissante, intelligente, et prit les rênes du pouvoir lorsque Jahângîr tomba malade. \n \nDans sa dernière phase, l’empire moghol fut dirigé par Nûr Jahân et sa famille. Un de ces souverains fut le prince Khurram, connu par la suite sous le nom de Shâh Jahân, un stratège militaire reconnu. Il fut responsable de la victoire de Jahângîr pendant son règne. En 1614, il mena une campagne contre le fort Sisodiya Rajput de Chittorgarh et força Rana Amar Singh à se rendre. Jahângîr fut ravi de cette victoire et considéra Khurram comme héritier présomptif. \n \nSous le règne du Shâh Jahân, l’empire moghol fut prospère, riche et reconnu dans le monde entier. Pendant les douze premières années de son règne, le Shâh Jahân mena plusieurs campagnes militaires dans le but de soumettre des souverains insoumis. Au même moment, il conquit le territoire à l’est de l’Inde, Sind, et au nord-ouest. En 1636, il fit une percée dans sa campagne pour accroître son extension territoire dans le Deccan. Les Moghols signèrent un traité avec deux dynasties du Deccan, le Shâh Adil de Bijapur et les Shâhs Qutb de Golkonda. Ceci offrit vingt ans de coexistence pacifique entre les Moghols et les sultanats du Deccan. \n \nEn 1658, le fils du Shâh Jahân, Aurangzeb, régna sur l’empire moghol de 1658 à 1707. Il devint le chef victorieux après une bataille pour la succession au cours de laquelle deux de ses frères furent tués, un autre fut exilé à Burma et son père fut emprisonné. Il régna pendant 49 ans. Il est connu sous le nom d’Âlamgir (Conquérant du monde). Sa plus belle réussite fut d'étendre le territoire moghol jusqu’au Deccan. Il asservit les sultans du Deccan et étendit ainsi massivement l’empire. \n \nAurangzeb est considéré comme un musulman orthodoxe qui s’est libéré des traditions libérales de ses prédécesseurs. Contrairement à l'image qui a été peinte, Aurangzeb était un souverain indien qui s'efforça tout au long de sa vie de préserver et d’agrandir l’empire moghol, de gagner du pouvoir politique et de régner selon sa propre vision de la justice. \n \nLa cour des successeurs moghols était connue pour sa culture hautement aristocratique. Ces souverains apprécient les divertissements offerts par la poésie et la musique, commandaient des peintures et d'objets miniatures, et soutenaient la construction d’une architecture monumentale pour la cour impériale moghole. \n \nCependant, de 1707 à 1857, la dynastie moghole connut une période de déclin. La mort d’Aurangzeb amena beaucoup de troubles, les courtisans rivalisant les uns contre les autres pour le pouvoir. Bahâdur Shâh Ier (1643–1712) tenta de modifier les politiques religieuses de la cour et de réformer son administration. Après sa mort en 1712, l’empire fut impliqué dans des querelles pour désigner le prochain successeur. Ce fut finalement le 20e souverain de la dynastie moghole, Bahâdur Shâh Zafar ou Bahâdur Shâh II (1837–57) qui lui succéda. Néanmoins, le dernier empereur moghol n’avait plus de pouvoir sur le royaume, il n'était empereur que de titre. Tout au long du 18e siècle, le nord de l’inde fut à la merci de pouvoirs autochtones et étrangers. L'arrivée de la Compagnie britannique des Indes orientales marqua la fin du règne moghol. À cette époque, l’empire moghol n’existait plus que de nom, tandis que la Compagnie britannique des Indes orientales gouvernait l’empire. \n \nBibliographie \n● Asher, Catherine B. and Talbot, Cynthia, India before Europe, UK : Cambridge University Press, 2006. \n● Koch, Ebba, Mughal Architecture, UK : Oxford University Press, 1991. \n● Richards, John F., Gordon Johnson, The Mughal Empire, UK : Cambridge University Press, 1993. \n● Truschke, Audrey, Aurangzeb : the Man and the Myth, India: Penguin Random House India Pvt. Au sens littéral, le mot “Mamelouk” signifie “possédé”, mais dans l’usage courant il désigne un esclave militaire. Et de fait, les Mamelouks étaient des esclaves militaires, arrivés des steppes eurasiennes par les ports de la mer Noire après avoir été achetés par le dernier sultan ayyoubide, Najm al-Din, qui allait lancer le régime mamelouk et le conduire à des sommets inespérés. \nLes esclaves mamelouks étaient originaires de différents groupes ethniques, mais la plupart étaient des Turcs et des Circassiens du Caucase.  Expressément destinés à devenir les défenseurs loyaux de la cause du sultan, ils étaient éduqués dans les principes de l’islam et devaient acquérir les techniques de combat et faire preuve de vrais talents de cavaliers. Leurs incomparables aptitudes militaires permirent bientôt aux Mamelouks d’établir leur propre souveraineté et de bâtir un empire qui allait contrôler pour plus de deux siècles l’Égypte, le Levant et les villes saintes musulmanes du Hijaz. \nLes sultans mamelouks allaient se distinguer en deux lignées principales : les Mamelouks bahrides, ainsi appelés parce que ces défenseurs des Ayyoubides étaient initialement cantonnés dans l’île de Rawda sur le Nil (al-Bahr), gouvernèrent de 648 à 792 (1250-1390). Les Mamelouks burguides, qui  doivent leur nom  aux tours (*burg*) dans lesquelles le sultan Qalawun avait logé ses gardes au Caire, gouvernèrent de 784 à 923 (1382-1517). \nNon seulement les Mamelouks repoussèrent la menace mongole par la décisive défaite de Aïn Djalout en Palestine en 658/1260, mais ils attaquèrent aussi  violemment  les châteaux croisés en Palestine et  finirent par les expulsèrent d’Akko (Saint-Jean-d'Acre)  en 690/1291.  Sur les fronts diplomatique et économique, le sultanat mamelouk a tissé des liens actifs avec toutes les grandes puissances musulmanes, de même qu’avec l’Extrême-Orient, Byzance, la France, la Castille, la Sicile,  Gênes et Venise. Le Caire devint le carrefour commercial du monde, et les marchandises exotiques qui y transitaient en provenance de l’Orient ou de l’Occident inspirèrent largement les artisans locaux, comme en témoigne leur production d’alors. \nLes Mamelouks furent d’extraordinaires défenseurs de l’islam et des protecteurs engagés des villes saintes. Ils restaurèrent le califat au Caire en 659/1261 après l’effondrement de son siège initial à Bagdad et s’attachèrent à construire de splendides mosquées, des *madrasa* (écoles religieuses) et des *waqf* (fondations religieuses) dans des villes comme Jérusalem, Le Caire, Alep et Damas. Les meilleurs artistes et artisans étaient sollicités pour doter ces édifices de décoration calligraphique et géométrique, de mobilier religieux, de corans, tapis et autres accessoires. Le mécénat s’appliquait aussi à des objets destinés à refléter la splendeur publique et privée du sultan mamelouk et de sa cour. \nLe déclin de la suprématie mamelouke viendra avec la découverte de nouvelles routes de commerce autour du cap de Bonne-Espérance, ce qui allait signer la fin du sultanat mamelouk en 923/1517.","date_description_ah":"648–923 de l’Hégire","date_description_ad":"1250–1517 J.-C."},"d9aed700-4f88-5eae-b943-d855a671e948":{"name":"Kadjars","also_known_as":"","area":"Perse (Iran), Géorgie et Arménie (suite à la perte du protectorat russe et de l’Empire britannique)","history":"Les Kadjars étaient d’origine turkmène, basés près d’Astrabad au nord-est de l’Iran. La dynastie Kadjar régna sur l’Iran de 1785 à 1925. Durant cette période, les Kadjars unifièrent l’Iran, promurent et encouragèrent les nouvelles innovations technologiques (comme le télégraphe et les chemins de fer). Les arts prospérèrent également sous leur règne ; la photographie et la lithographie, ainsi que des formes innovantes de portraits et de peintures à l'huile amenés de l’Ouest, furent rapidement adoptées par les artistes et les mécènes. Durant les 140 ans que dura le règne de la dynastie Kadjar, l'Iran se transforma de confédérations de tribus rivales à une monarchie centralisée et enfin un parlement constitutionnel. Dans la conscience historique des gens, les Kadjars évoquent l'ère glorieuse des Safavides dans toute sa puissance et sa splendeur. \n \nLe premier Shah Kadjar fut Agha Mohammad Chah (1795–98). Lors de son règne, sa préoccupation principale fut de consolider la position du pays contre ses opposants, les Zands de Shiraz (1750–94). Il vainquit le dernier prince zand, Lotf Ali Khan. Finalement, Agha Mohammad Chah fut assassiné par un de ses serviteurs en mai 1796 et son neveu, Bâbâ Khan, lui succéda et fut couronné sous le nom de Fath Ali Chah. \n \nFath Ali Chah régna de 1797 à 1834. Il travailla à redéfinir l’image impériale Kadjar pour la distinguer de celle de ses prédécesseurs. Lors des 37 ans du règne de Fath Ali Chah, ce dernier unifia ses citoyens et améliora l'administration grandissante du pays. C’est à cette époque qu’éclata la première guerre russo-persane, lorsque les territoires de l’Iran de la Géorgie et de l’Azerbaïdjan furent pris par les ennemis. La situation politique avec la Russie et la Grande-Bretagne ne fut pas toujours évidente. Une seconde guerre russo-persane éclata à l'été 1826 dans le Caucase, où les Musulmans se battirent contre les Russes. Après cette guerre, l’Iran fut capable de reconquérir tous ses territoires perdus. \n \nFath ‘Ali Shah mourut en 1834 et ce fut son petit-fils, Mohammad Chah, qui lui succéda (1834–48). Cependant, la succession par Mohammad Chah mena à une rivalité avec deux de ses oncles, Zell-e Soltan, souverain de Téhéran, et Farmanfarma à Fars. Chacun d’entre eux pensait qu’il méritait de succéder à Fath ‘Ali Shah. La Russie et la Grande-Bretagne reconnurent Mohammad Chah comme successeur, et il fut aidé et conseillé par Abol Qasem Qa’em Maqam, le conseiller de son père. Il fut finalement couronné souverain lors d’une cérémonie à Téhéran. Mohammed Shah mourut en septembre 1848. Son règne fut loin d’être pacifique puisqu’une grande partie fut consacrée à la lutte contre la Grande-Bretagne. Son fils, Nassereddine Shah, lui succéda. \n \nA l'âge de 17 ans, Nassereddine Shah (1848-96) accéda au trône. Il initia des changements et modernisa la capitale de Téhéran. Son conseiller était Mirza Taghi Khan Amir-Nezam (plus tard connu sous le nom d’Amir Kabir), qui agissait en tant que grand vizir. Amir Kabir mit en place des réformes pour moderniser, développer et réformer l'État. Il entreprit également de réformer les systèmes financiers et militaires. Sa plus grande réussite fut cependant la création de Dar-ol-Fonoun (maison des sciences), une des premières écoles d’Iran à se baser sur le modèle occidental d’apprentissage. Il la considérait comme un bon terrain d'entraînement pour les futurs fonctionnaires et les militaires. \n \nAprès la mort de Nassereddine Shah, Mozaffareddine Chah (1896-1906) devint le nouveau souverain à l'âge de 43 ans. Il fut considéré comme un souverain faible et plus clément avec ses sujets que ne l'était son père. L’une de ses réussites fut d'établir le firman, un édit royal déclarant qu'il accordait une Majles (assemblée consultative) et que des élections seraient organisées. Les élections à Téhéran furent rapidement organisées et la première Majles fut inaugurée par Mozaffareddine Chah le 7 octobre 1906. Le premier acte de la Majles fut de préparer une constitution - une première dans l’histoire de l’Iran. Elle fut établie et signée par le souverain Mozaffareddine Chah cinq jours avant sa mort en février 1907. Son fils, Mohammad Ali Chah, lui succéda. \n \nMohammad Ali Chah (1907-09) avait 35 ans lorsqu’il accéda au trône. Il fut élevé par un tuteur russe, ce qui le rendit peu populaire auprès des nationalistes iraniens qui se tournèrent plus tard contre lui. Le Shah tenta un coup d’État en décembre 1907, mais échoua. Il fut critiqué par les fonctionnaires et le grand public à la Majles. En juillet 1907, il abdiqua et laissa son fils de douze ans, Ahmad Mirza, lui succéder. \n \nLorsque Ahmad Shah (1909-25) devint le souverain Kadjar, la région au nord-est du pays était occupée ; l’accord russo-britannique de 1907 signifiait que les ministres des deux pays avaient interféré avec les affaires internes de l’Iran, notamment dans la nomination des membres des cabinets. Lors de la première guerre mondiale (1914-18), l'Iran fut assiégé par les troupes russes, britanniques et ottomanes. Ahmed Shah ne put jamais se remettre de ce revers. Avec un coup d’ État en février 1921, Reza Khan (plus tard connu sous le nom de Reza Chah Pahlavi) fut élu pour prendre la place d’Ahmad Shah , qui fut déposé par la Majles. \n \nBibliographie \n• Algar, Hamid, Religion and State in Iran 1785-1906 - The Role of the Ulama in the Qajar Period, Berkeley, CA: University of California Press, 1980. \n• Daryaee T. Son fils Abou Saïd Bahadur Han lui succéda alors qu’il était encore très jeune, et se détermina pour l’islam sunnite. Bahadur nomma Choban Noyan vizir, mais tous deux ne tardèrent pas à s’affronter. Choban Noyan fut assassiné en 1327, ce qui entraîna des insurrections dans l’armée ilkhanide. Les émeutes prirent fin avec la mort de Bahadur en 1335 et l’émergence de nouveaux États : l’émir Choban Oghullari s’imposa en Azerbaïdjan, Cheikh Hassan à Bagdad, tandis que l’émirat d’Eretna s’établissait dans l’est de la Turquie.","date_description_ah":"654-736 H","date_description_ad":"1256-1335 J.-C."},"f1cbe826-876f-50ce-b965-80fab0039660":{"name":"Ottomans","also_known_as":"","area":"Anatolie, Balkans, territoires arabes de l'Irak à l'Algérie","history":"La dynastie ottomane, qui régna plus de 600 ans sur la partie orientale de la Méditerranée, a signé un chapitre majeur de l’histoire du monde dans la région et au-delà. L’émirat ottoman, l’un des nombreux émirats de l’Anatolie occidentale, fait irruption sur la scène de l’Histoire avec Osman Bey, lequel étendit rapidement son territoire en signant des traités avec d’autres émirats – ou en leur déclarant la guerre – à une époque de chaos dans l’Anatolie des XIVe et XVe siècles. Les Ottomans survécurent aussi à la tornade mongole et s’imposèrent comme une puissance considérable dans la région. Avec leur armée et leur marine, devenue une invincible armada, les Ottomans prirent Istanbul en 1453 et devinrent un empire. Leur hégémonie atteignit son zénith sous le règne de Soliman le Législateur (également connu sous le nom de Soliman le Magnifique) (1520-1566), leur territoire s’étendant alors de l’Europe au Moyen-Orient et au nord de l’Afrique. Comportant une pléthore de cultures, l’empire se transforma en un empire culturel tentant de garder, améliorer et établir des interactions au sein de la mosaïque ethnique et religieuse à l’intérieur de son territoire. Le caractère oriental, dominant jusqu’au XVIIIe siècle, commença à être influencé, suite aux changements politiques, par des vents soufflant de l’ouest, qui s’affirmèrent au XIXe siècle. Le pouvoir dominant pendant la période d’Ascension réussit à construire une authentique et très efficace synthèse dans ses relations avec d’autres États, mais pendant les périodes Stationnaire et de Déclin, la pression extérieure affaiblit considérablement l’empire et le conduisit à la chute finale. Par ailleurs, les réformes du XIXe siècle ne réussirent pas à s’imposer en profondeur, et les vues réformistes éclairées se voyaient régulièrement contrecarrées par le dogmatisme religieux. Durant ce processus, le fait que les individus aient eu l’habitude de s’en remettre totalement au sultan retarda l’émergence d’un esprit critique ; et le faible développement de l’éducation était flagrant dans cet “empire mondial” prenant sa place dans le grand livre de l’Histoire.","date_description_ah":"698–1340 H","date_description_ad":"1299–1922 J.-C."}}
