+## Overview
+
+Reduces a file's surface area without changing behaviour. The skill is conservative: every removed line must be either dead, redundant, or replaceable by a tighter form that reads the same to a downstream user. No "while I'm here" rewrites — that's `rcode-incremental`'s job paired with a real task.
+
+## Workflow
+
+1. **Read the file with tests as ground truth.** If there are no tests, run `rcode-prove-it` first to capture current behaviour. Trimming without a safety net is a refactor in disguise.
+2. **Identify removable categories** in priority order:
+   1. **Dead code** — unreachable branches, unused exports, commented-out blocks. Verify with grep that no other file references them.
+   2. **Duplicate code** — same logic in two places. Extract carefully.
+   3. **Premature abstractions** — wrappers that add a layer for one caller. Inline.
+   4. **Dead arguments** — parameters that are always passed the default. Remove.
+   5. **Verbose conditionals** — collapse to early returns or guard clauses.
+   6. **Comments that restate the code** — delete.
+3. **Apply one category per commit.** Run tests after each. If anything goes red, the change wasn't actually safe — revert.
+4. **Stop trimming when** the file reads top-to-bottom with no "wait, why is that here?" moments. There's a floor of natural complexity; below it, you're losing intent.
+
+## Don't touch
+
+- Comments that explain WHY (constraints, invariants, surprising behaviour) — these earn their lines.
+- Verbose names that prevent confusion. `userIdAfterRotation` beats `id`.
+- Defensive validation at system boundaries (user input, external APIs).
+

+**Edge case — comment that earns its lines** — `// see issue #234 — Postgres pre-13 doesn't return rowCount on UPSERT, so we re-query`. Don't touch it. The comment captures a constraint that won't be obvious from the code alone.
+
+**Negative — "simplify by rewriting"** — User asks to "clean up" a working module. If the rewrite is bigger than the cuts, it's not trimming — it's a refactor. Refuse and route to `rcode-incremental` with a real task.
+

+## Workflow (every invocation)
+
+1. **Discover source roots.** `find . -maxdepth 1 -type d` excluding `.git`, `node_modules`, `.next`, `dist`, `__pycache__`, `.venv`. Result: `$SOURCE_ROOTS`.
+2. **Detect languages.** Read manifests at depth ≤3: `package.json`, `pyproject.toml`, `requirements.txt`, `Cargo.toml`, `go.mod`, `Gemfile`, `pom.xml`, `build.gradle`, `composer.json`.
+3. **Detect monorepo layout.** `pnpm-workspace.yaml`, `turbo.json`, `nx.json`, `lerna.json`, or `package.json` `workspaces` field.
+4. **Topic-phrase sweep** (if a phrase was passed) — `for ROOT in $SOURCE_ROOTS; do grep -rli "$TOPIC" "$ROOT"; done`. The returned file list is the PRIMARY analysis target; do not fall back to `src/*.ts` after that grep returns hits in `backend/`.
+5. **Focus-driven exploration.** Iterate across `$SOURCE_ROOTS` adapted to detected languages. Read key files identified by the topic sweep.
+6. **Write documents.** Every doc opens with the Scan Scope block (see Output Format). Body covers ONLY current state — never temporal language.
+7. **Refresh-mode addendum.** When the orchestrator passes a `PRE_STATE` block, insert a `## Changes since last scan` section after Scan Scope, and emit a `Brief:` line in the closing summary for `.planning/codebase/CHANGELOG.md`.

+Body conventions: file paths in backticks, line refs when relevant (`path/to/file.py:110`), prescriptive voice ("Use camelCase for functions"), no temporal language, no emojis except `✓ ⚠ ●`.

+The `Brief:` line is verbatim-extracted by the orchestrator into `.planning/codebase/CHANGELOG.md` when `--refresh` was passed.

+## Examples
+
+**Happy path — topic sweep on a polyglot monorepo**
+`/rcode-scan --focus concerns --topic "Sentry instrumentation"` → discover `web/ backend/ ml/ deployments/` → detect Python + TS → topic sweep finds 47 files including `backend/onyx/server/exception_handlers.py` → write `CONCERNS.md` with full Scan Scope → close `— Dalil`.
+
+**Edge case — topic phrase returns zero matches**
+Re-grep with `-i`. Re-grep with canonical names (`apollo`, `@apollo/client`, `graphql-yoga`, `pothos`, `nexus`, `mercurius`). Only after all variants return zero, declare *"GraphQL is not present in this codebase"* — and show every variant tried.
+
+**Edge case — vendored upstream subdirectory**
+`backend/onyx/` is forked from Danswer upstream → search it anyway because it ships in the deployed binary; note in Scan Scope that it's vendored.
+
+**Negative — out-of-scope question**
+"Should we use Postgres or Mongo?" → stay silent, redirect to Waleed (CTO).
+
+## Memory Bank Hooks
+
+- **Reads:** the entire repo (read-only); previous `.planning/codebase/` outputs when in refresh mode
+- **Writes:** files under `.planning/codebase/` only; `CHANGELOG.md` (refresh mode)
+
+## Constraints
+
+- Never modify code — read-only by design
+- Never claim coverage you didn't deliver
+- Never produce a doc without the Scan Scope header
+- Never grep only `src/` unless that's the only discovered root
+- Never declare "X not present" without trying canonical names + case-insensitive variants
+- Never write files outside `.planning/codebase/`
