+ "body": "<p>Los Angeles is a land of machines, from the cars that crowd our freeways to the cranes that unload ships in our parts.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>Visual artist <a href=\"http://www.stellakalinina.com/\" target=\"_blank\">Stella Kalinina</a> is in the middle of a project that explores parts of the machinery of America&#39;s second largest city.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>Her first video takes you to the <a href=\"http://www.portoflosangeles.org/\" target=\"_blank\">Port of Los Angeles</a> where huge machines offload the goods that fuel American commerce.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>Kalinina, a student at <a href=\"http://www.artcenter.edu/accd/index.jsp\" target=\"_blank\">Art Center College</a> in Pasadena,&nbsp;blends sound and visuals in an interesting way that gives the machinations of the port a new life.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>Her second video explores the pumpjacks that dot the hills of Long Beach and along La Cienega Boulevard.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>The images are interspersed with audio of residents talking about their&nbsp;neighbors that suck oil from the earth like birds drinking from a straw.</p>\r\n\r\n<div><iframe allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"360\" mozallowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"//player.vimeo.com/video/69345068?title=0&amp;byline=0&amp;portrait=0\" webkitallowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"640\"></iframe></div>\r\n\r\n<p>(Via <a href=\"http://www.laimyours.com/56487/madness/\" target=\"_blank\">LA, I&#39;m Yours</a>)</p>\r\n",

+ "body": "<p>For social workers who knock unbidden on doors where child welfare complaints have been filed, Friday and Saturday nights are always the busiest.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>On any given night, about two dozen emergency response social workers work late into the evening, responding to child abuse calls from all over Los Angeles County.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>&quot;A typical Friday night could be anywhere from 40 to 55 child abuse investigations for my staff,&quot; Javier&nbsp;Avila, a supervisor at the Los Angeles Department of Child and Family Services.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>We followed two social workers on their late-night rounds, knocking on doors, waking&nbsp;up families in the middle of the night&nbsp;and trying to determine if children were safe.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>Friday nights also seem to bring the worst cases. &nbsp;&quot;It can include child accidents, child fatalities, near drownings, or near fatalities,&quot; Avila says. &quot;So we pretty much get the very severe types of cases on Friday and Saturday nights.&quot;</p>\r\n\r\n<p>If the social worker determines that the child is in immediate danger, they will remove her from the house immediately. She might end up in a police station or in a conference room at the massive cubicle farm that is DCFS headquarters&nbsp;in Downtown Los Angeles.</p>\r\n",
