We post extra delights to&nbsp;<a href=\"http://twitter.com/audiovision\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter</a>, <a href=\"http://audiovision.tumblr.com/\" target=\"_blank\">Tumblr</a> and <a href=\"http://www.facebook.com/Audiovision\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook</a>. We play around on <a href=\"http://instagram.com/kpcc\">Instagram</a>, too.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>As photojournalists, we approach people in public nearly every day and ask to take their picture.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>This conversation always begins with some version of the phrase, &quot;My name is Grant, and I&#39;m a photographer for public radio.&quot; Nine times out of 10, the&nbsp;reply comes with a confused look:&nbsp;&quot;How do you take pictures for the radio?&quot;</p>\r\n\r\n<p>The short answer is &quot;for the website.&quot; But there&#39;s a longer version of this conversation, and it goes to the heart of what public radio does for listeners.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>Public radio is not a number on your radio dial. It&#39;s not even about radio.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>Public radio is an ethos. It&#39;s a way of viewing the world with curiosity and care. It&#39;s about making your life better through stories big and small.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>You know what that sounds like. You hear it on public radio stations across the country every day. But what does it look like? AudioVision is our attempt to find out.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>The digital world we&#39;ve created is a place exploding with eye candy, visual distractions that make getting anything done a near impossibility.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>In the same way that public radio filters the news of the day and brings you just the best, AudioVision will help you sort through the <a href=\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&amp;v=VACbH_S5ZFo\" target=\"_blank\">cacophony of cat videos</a>.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>We constantly look to the online world for inspiration, and we&#39;d like to share that inspiration with you, alongside our work from Los Angeles and beyond.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>Southern California is the capital of global visual culture. This is the place where billion-dollar blockbusters get made, the place where YouTube studios are popping up to challenge the traditional tastemakers of Hollywood and the place where art, music, fashion and photography make the jump from niche to&nbsp;mainstream.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>Those ideas may start elsewhere, but all roads eventually lead to Los Angeles.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>Southern California itself&nbsp;is one of the most diverse regions&nbsp;on the planet. We live here. We&#39;ll show it to you.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>Here&#39;s what you can expect to find on&nbsp;AudioVision.</p>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>We&#39;ll bring you <em>photos from Southern California and beyond</em>. We&#39;ll talk with&nbsp;image makers doing captivating&nbsp;work and share their work with you.</li>\r\n\t<li>Web video is evolving rapidly. Los Angeles is ground zero for the YouTube revolution and we&#39;re keeping close eye on the best.&nbsp;</li>\r\n\t<li><em>Photography is undergoing a social revolution</em> that is democratizing both the tools of the trade and the distribution of photography. There&#39;s never been a better time to be a&nbsp;photography addict, but the photos come in torrents. We&#39;ll enrich your life by steering&nbsp;your Instagram feed to new places. And we&#39;ll give you the smarts to take better photos yourself.</li>\r\n</ul>\r\n\r\n<p>We have a big basket full of ideas, and we hope you&#39;ll stick with us as we try some of them out.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>We view photography these days as a conversation. We want to see your photos as much as we want&nbsp;to show you ours.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>We work with <a href=\"http://instagram.com/igla\" target=\"_blank\">Instagram Lovers Anonymous</a> to hold a monthly Instagram Challenge on a theme, and we have more activities in the works.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>You can always tag any photo on Instagram #KPCC, and we&#39;ll find it. +      "body": "<p>Here at AudioVision,&nbsp;we&#39;ll regularly highlight the most interesting &nbsp;and artful&nbsp;people to follow in the world of social photography.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>Since this is our first week, we thought we&#39;d start with ourselves. Check out introductions to <a href=\"http://audiovision.scpr.org/68/follow-this-maeryan\">Mae Ryan</a> and <a href=\"http://audiovision.scpr.org/97/follow-this-maya_sugarman\">Maya Sugarman</a>, too.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>I&#39;m not saying we&#39;re at the top of the heap. We aren&#39;t. Social photography is nothing less than&nbsp;a creative revolution. In the past few years alone, there&#39;s been an&nbsp;explosion of&nbsp;amazing and thought-provoking photography.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>The world of image-making is changing every few months with the release of a new app for distribution or a higher-end camera stuffed in to a smaller package. (Google Glass, anyone? My jury&#39;s still out on that.)</p>\r\n\r\n<p>This medium and these tools are not going away any time soon.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>Like a lot of my friends, I&#39;m fairly addicted to mobile photography. My Instagram account is one of the first things I check in the morning and the last things I look at before I pass out for the night.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>I love how social photography&nbsp;transports me to new places and&nbsp;shows me new things. It gives me a peek in to the lives of interesting people. It exposes me to new creative ways to make images.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>I like to follow feeds that transport me into different people&#39;s&nbsp;lives, from the prime minister of Russia to the work of anonymous street photographers in Iran. I follow people all over Los Angeles to get an idea of the crazy diversity&nbsp;in this city we cover here at KPCC.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>I started off like a lot of Instagrammers, taking photos of inanimate objects, funny signs or my food. I soon found myself turning to mobile photography more for photojournalism.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>It&#39;s a powerful tool for capturing candid moments, because it&#39;s not as imposing as a big professional camera.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>It&#39;s not perfect out of the box though. I&#39;ve gone through a whole series of apps and workflows to make images over the couple of years I&#39;ve been playing this game.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>Here at AudioVision, we&#39;ll tell you what we&#39;ve learned in a regular series of posts. We&#39;ll talk to some of the best about how they do what they do.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>Right now, I turn to Camera+ for almost all my photos. It&#39;s camped right there in my dock. I went through a phase where I really loved using an app called Decim8 to mash up my photographs. That faded, but I think I feel the urge&nbsp;coming back.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>I do a lot of my basic editing in an app called Afterlight. If you&#39;ve never used it, you should try it out. It&#39;s easy to use and subtle in its adjustments.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>When I need to do heavy lifting on the editing front, I take my photos in to FilterStorm.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>I&#39;m&nbsp;biased toward more photojournalistic feeds on Instagram. If a photographer&nbsp;becomes to solipsistic, I won&#39;t follow along for long.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>I try to use my mobile phone for extra shots from my assignments with KPCC and to record spontaneous moments. If I&#39;m posting something during the week, it&#39;s usually something I snapped on the sidelines of&nbsp;a story you&#39;ll hear on KPCC.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>I try to keep it all mobile, but every once in a while I admit to sneaking in a photo from my bigger cameras or a roll of film.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>Here at AudioVision, we believe there&#39;s a lot to say about this new world of photography. +      "body": "<p>I took my first ever Instagram photo two years ago in New York, but back then I was a private user so my photo of a red tree never got any likes.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>These days, I still take the occasional tree photo, but I&#39;ll usually throw in some strange geometric forms with <a href=\"https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/decim8/id392720563?mt=8\">Decim8</a>, an app that adds digital glitches to images and is my favorite way to kill time.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>When my images aren&#39;t all glitched out, I like using <a href=\"https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/afterlight/id573116090?mt=8\">Afterlight</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/vsco-cam/id513526765?mt=8&amp;ign-mpt=uo%3D2\">VSCO Cam</a>&nbsp;to add some contrast and a bit of color to my more straightforward photos.</p>\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"http://instagram.com/p3t3brook\">Pete Brook</a>, a contributing writer at Wired, says my stream &quot;keeps you confused, which is good.&quot; I tend to agree.</p>\r\n",

Every once in a while, my&nbsp;non-photo&nbsp;projects make their way into my feed.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>I like to draw, paint&nbsp;and do printmaking because of the physicality. Digital photos aren&#39;t something you can hold in your hand. But mobile photography is&nbsp;quickly changing that.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>You can find me on Instagram. Once he posted a picture from a&nbsp;protest against dog poop.&nbsp;Hiloki Ocamoto (<a href=\"http://instagram.com/ocamotone\">@ocamotone</a>) is from&nbsp;Japan. He has a&nbsp;banal, minimalist sense of visual&nbsp;humor.&nbsp;David Alan Foster (<a href=\"http://instagram.com/davidalanfoster\">@davidalanfoster</a>) is a photojournalism teacher and grad student at Kent State. He observes many funny situations, and remnants of funny situations.</p>\r\n",
