"body": "
It’s mountain lion season in Southern California.
\r\n\r\n
Over the next couple months, scientists from UC Davis’s Wildlife Health Center will be putting tags and GPS on as many wild cougars as they can.
\r\n\r\n
On a recent night, it was pitch dark, the frogs were croaking and Winston Vickers was trying to sedate a wild cougar.
\r\n\r\n
The lion – this one is named F95 – snarled and rattled against the sides of her cage. Take Two freelancer Jed Kim recorded what that sounds like:
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Minutes later, it took the whole team to pull the unconscious cat from the trap and lay it on the ground so work could begin.
\r\n\r\n
Vickers and his team have done this more than 100 times throughout Southern California.
\r\n\r\n
Out of the 70 lions he has collared, half have died. Most of those deaths are directly related to humans.
\r\n\r\n
Vickers' team is made up of people from Department of Fish and Wildlife, The Nature Conservancy and local parks departments. They're trying to figure out how to protect the mountain lion population here, but catching these cats is a tough task.
\r\n\r\n
Sometimes it takes a few hours to get to the point of capture; sometimes it takes all night.
\r\n\r\n
The team finally caught up with F95 at 1 a.m. They quickly measured the cat's teeth and paws, took blood samples, and checked the GPS signal on her new collar. They only have 45 minutes to do this, maybe less.
\r\n\r\n
The sedation is starting to wear off and one of the team members has to hold her head down.
\r\n\r\n
They decide to cut the health check short.
\r\n\r\n
Winston Vickers helps F95 stand up and the team says goodbye to the 2-year-old cat, wishing her the best. They hope to see her have cubs soon.
\r\n",

"body": "
What color is space?
\r\n\r\n
That's all in the eye of the beholder. Images taken from many telescopes return black and white images or data that must be manipulated.
\r\n\r\n
Amateur and professional astrophotographers spend hours colorizing images from across the galaxy with exacting precision. They add color to the clouds of the Horsehead Nebula or paint the rings of Saturn.
\r\n\r\n
Los Angeles-based art photographer Siri Kaur takes a more impressionistic approach to the craft.
\r\n\r\n
Four or five times a year since 2007, she's driven 480 miles to the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona to point her film camera at the sky.
\r\n\r\n
"Their telescopes are the size of a house, they're enormous," Kaur said.
\r\n\r\n
Since the observatory sits at 7,000 feet, Kaur always has a little headache.
\r\n\r\n
Getting a good image off the telescopes is a challenge. It takes five to eight hours to expose one picture through the night. And after all this, sometimes Kaur may come back with nothing.
\r\n\r\n
If you have some time, this fascinating video of Astronaut Don Pettit explaining the challenge of photographing space is well worth it.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
At first, Kaur developed her photos traditionally, then one day a slip changed everything.
\r\n\r\n
"I started in the darkroom printing them, and I messed up one of the prints," she said. "It was really off, and it looked amazing."
\r\n\r\n
Siri Kaur began experimenting, intentionally exposing the photos to light and sprinkling them with chemicals.
\r\n\r\n
She now names her astronomical works of distorted light and color after the images they conjure instead of the subjects they capture – a rose, clouds, the desert.
\r\n\r\n
Despite her distorting development process, Kaur is still amazed by the enormity of astrophotography.
\r\n\r\n
"This light has been traveling for as long as the planet's been around," she said. "It hits my camera, and I capture it."
\r\n\r\n
Siri Kaur is a photography professor at Otis College of Art and Design.
\r\n\r\n
You can see Kaur's work in person at the Cohen Gallery from March 28 – May 11, as part of the show "Falling From Great Heights."
\r\n",

"body": "
Welcome to AudioVision, our little corner of the Internet for exploring the world through images from Southern California and beyond.
\r\n\r\n
This site has three hosts, Mae Ryan, Grant Slater and Maya Sugarman. We post extra delights to Twitter, Tumblr and Facebook. We play around on Instagram, too.
\r\n\r\n
As photojournalists, we approach people in public nearly every day and ask to take their picture.
\r\n\r\n
This conversation always begins with some version of the phrase, "My name is Grant, and I'm a photographer for public radio." Nine times out of 10, the reply comes with a confused look: "How do you take pictures for the radio?"
\r\n\r\n
The short answer is "for the website." But there's a longer version of this conversation, and it goes to the heart of what public radio does for listeners.
\r\n\r\n
Public radio is not a number on your radio dial. It's not even about radio.
\r\n\r\n
Public radio is an ethos. It's a way of viewing the world with curiosity and care. It's about making your life better through stories big and small.
\r\n\r\n
You know what that sounds like. You hear it on public radio stations across the country every day. But what does it look like? AudioVision is our attempt to find out.
\r\n\r\n
The digital world we've created is a place exploding with eye candy, visual distractions that make getting anything done a near impossibility.
\r\n\r\n
In the same way that public radio filters the news of the day and brings you just the best, AudioVision will help you sort through the cacophony of cat videos.
\r\n\r\n
We constantly look to the online world for inspiration, and we'd like to share that inspiration with you, alongside our work from Los Angeles and beyond.
\r\n\r\n
Southern California is the capital of global visual culture. This is the place where billion-dollar blockbusters get made, the place where YouTube studios are popping up to challenge the traditional tastemakers of Hollywood and the place where art, music, fashion and photography make the jump from niche to mainstream.
\r\n\r\n
Those ideas may start elsewhere, but all roads eventually lead to Los Angeles.
\r\n\r\n
Southern California itself is one of the most diverse regions on the planet. We live here. We'll show it to you.
\r\n\r\n
Here's what you can expect to find on AudioVision.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
We'll bring you photos from Southern California and beyond. We'll talk with image makers doing captivating work and share their work with you.
\r\n\t
Web video is evolving rapidly. We're part of that change, and we keep close tabs on new and inspiring work. We'll watch videos from across the web so you don't have to and point you toward those that will inform and inspire you. Los Angeles is ground zero for the YouTube revolution and we're keeping close eye on the best.
\r\n\t
Photography is undergoing a social revolution that is democratizing both the tools of the trade and the distribution of photography. There's never been a better time to be a photography addict, but the photos come in torrents. We'll enrich your life by steering your Instagram feed to new places. And we'll give you the smarts to take better photos yourself.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
We have a big basket full of ideas, and we hope you'll stick with us as we try some of them out.
\r\n\r\n
We view photography these days as a conversation. We want to see your photos as much as we want to show you ours.
\r\n\r\n
We work with Instagram Lovers Anonymous to hold a monthly Instagram Challenge on a theme, and we have more activities in the works.
\r\n\r\n
You can always tag any photo on Instagram #KPCC, and we'll find it. For your captures with bigger cameras, you can submit photos to our Flickr pool.
