Documentation obtained by Joystiq – and subsequently confirmed with two separate sources – reveals that "USB Mass Storage Device Support on Xbox 360" will soon be a reality. The document, authored by a senior software development engineer at Microsoft, states that due to "increased market penetration of high-capacity, high throughput USB mass storage devices, a 2010 Xbox 360 system update" will allow consumers to save and load game data from USB devices. The update is purportedly coming in Spring 2010.<br />

Once the update occurs, Xbox 360 owners will be able to download Xbox Live Arcade games, Xbox Live Indie games, Games on Demand, DLC and Title Updates to the storage device. "USB storage devices may, however, have far greater memory capacity than MUs (at the date of writing, the largest MU is 512 MB), and may therefore support previously infeasible operations-such as installation of a full disc-based title." According to the document, the USB mass storage device must be at least 1GB and the system will do a compatibility check. "The system partition occupies 512 MB of space, and by default the consumer partition occupies the remainder of the device capacity, or 16 GB, whichever is smaller." Upon inserting a blank USB storage device, "consumers are offered two choices: 'Configure now' or 'Customize'." The "Configure now" option will use "the entire device capacity, up to the maximum of 512 MB plus 16 GB" meaning, regardless of the overall size of the device you're using, the Xbox will only enable 16 GB of usable, non-system storage. It should be clear by now that Microsoft is simply pulling out of the Memory Unit business and not the highly lucrative Xbox hard drive business. Glad as i am (and you sound) i think they took way too long for this. This should have happened AGES ago, if not built into the system at launch. I will acknowledge that they are the first to do this however and that is a good step (although Sony does allow you to transfer saves using a USB and also download other peoples saves (with trophies locked).

I wonder if you will even be able to read the data on this partition when connecting to a PC. @Swagman<br><br>Some of us only need a little extra storage. It has multiple uses. A lot of us have thumb drives just hanging around waiting to be used. This is no slap in the face. It's a nice alternative for us who don't want to spend a fortune on a huge HDD when needing only minor more space. It's also good for transfers and storage of media. <br><br>All in all it's better than nothing. You now have an extra option open to you rather than JUST having to buy the expensive HDDs.

urza, seriously?<br><br>It's sweet that I have 106 games and 300 movies on my PS3. I can't wait for next gen, when I don't need discs at all. Just scrolling through tons of games is fun, easy, and gives me more value. I don't want to have to reinstall a game just to play it again for 1 hour, a year after I beat it. I don't have to.<br><br>And really, running out of space keeps people from buying more games. That's why I bought the 500gb hdd for my 60 gb PS3 (it was CHEAP!). I realized I wasn't getting games I wanted because I ran out of room.<br><br>Devs should ask MS to unlock their storage caps. They would sell more. MS has a good system with a lot of good games. Just because you don't 'need' several installed at once doesn't mean it isn't much better that way.

Seriously. What do they mean by "due to the market penetration" of high capacity USB storage devices? Do they mean people have literally rammed them into their 360's? In this case they've converted a large amount of non-users into users and have convinced current users that they should stick with it. Also, just a quick addition, just because they were readily available does not mean that everyone used them. They've seen a lot more prevalence over the last two years as opposed to 2006 and 2007 where it was mostly tech-savvy people probably using them.<br><br>But that's just justifying Microsoft's "marketing" response really - they've had no reason NOT to use them up to this point for XBOX-related storage.

I know I'm gonna sound like a PS3 fan boy, so I'll preface this by saying that I own twice as many 360 games and play it way more often.<br><br>With that said. MS really sucks ass in the storage department, compared to the PS3. <br><br>PS3<br>- Use any sized 2.5" SATA hard drive you want<br>- Use any FAT formated USB drive to store saves (that aren't locked), music, movies<br><br>Xbox 360<br>- Proprietary overpriced hard drives<br>- Proprietary overpriced memory units (3rd party MUs disabled)<br>- New option of USB requires proprietary partition file system, limited to 16 GB<br><br>Anti-Sony or not. Wouldn't you prefer if MS were not taking advantage of it's customers who already had to endure faulty hardware. This is the one aspect of the Xbox that annoys me the most.

yea nerdydesi has it right. even though i'm glad they finally entered this Gen in terms of storage (the Wii uses regular SD cards too), the cap is simply so people can just replace the need to buy their expensive hard drives with an external drive they have laying around the house. pretty much a dick move but you have to remember that they are trying to sell stuff first and foremost. it's a step in the right direction at least.

When it comes to storage, the PS3 completely and thoroughly pwn3z.<br><br>I'm annoyed that I found a 512MB MU as an open-box deal for half-off ($25, when 8MB cards were still $30) and considered that a "good deal" -- when 2GB memory sticks were already half of *that* price.<br><br>And, of course, hard drives are even worse.

You can reformat anything to be NTFS, FAT32 is default because it works on everything. But it doesnt matter anyways because I was assuming they were supporting external storage like the PS3, not pulling this bullshit.

If only they would make the 360 support NTFS. I keep all of my media larger than 4 GB formatted NTFS just in case I need to fit an iso or a large video file, and I kind of hate that I basically have to have a dedicated FAT32 HD, just because the MICROSOFT Xbox can't read MICROSOFT's NTFS file system. It just makes no sense.

If you use a Mac formatted drive you can use large file sizes if watching movies via USB. There's a program called MacDrive that let's you format and such on a PC. works great with those 500GB external drives!<br><br>/for xbox anyway, not sure about PS3

No NTFS support because it's not needed.<br><br>The USB device will be repartitioned with a "system partition" and a "consumer partition". The consumer partition will likely be formated as FATX which is what the Xbox 360 HDs and current MUs use. I have no idea about the system partition (or why it needs to be 512MB)<br><br>This is for replacing current MUs, not changes to USB spooling of music/video. If you need > 2GB files you'll have to do what @readmore said and use Mac formatted HFS+ drives for that or just spool it over a networked computer. Before you go thinking about conspiracies you'll have to realize that the only reason that HFS+ recognized by the 360 and not NTFS is because they had to have it for Mac formatted iPods.

@tinyroar How do you split Blu-ray movies in half? Last I checked, they couldn't be copied over to the the PS3's hard drive. PS3 uses an unknown file system for its internal hard drive since its able to exceed the 4GB file size limit FAT32 imposes. Its external drives use FAT32 though.
