+ # Collatz
2
+
3
+ Welcome to your new gem! In this directory, you'll find the files you need to be able to package up your Ruby library into a gem. Put your Ruby code in the file `lib/collatz`. To experiment with that code, run `bin/console` for an interactive prompt.
4
+
5
+ TODO: Delete this and the text above, and describe your gem
6
+
7
+ ## Installation
8
+
9
+ Install the gem and add to the application's Gemfile by executing:
10
+
11
+ $ bundle add collatz
12
+
13
+ If bundler is not being used to manage dependencies, install the gem by executing:
14
+
15
+ $ gem install collatz
16
+
17
+ ## Usage
18
+
19
+ TODO: Write usage instructions here
20
+
21
+ ## Development
22
+
23
+ After checking out the repo, run `bin/setup` to install dependencies. Then, run `rake spec` to run the tests. You can also run `bin/console` for an interactive prompt that will allow you to experiment.
24
+
25
+ To install this gem onto your local machine, run `bundle exec rake install`. To release a new version, update the version number in `version.rb`, and then run `bundle exec rake release`, which will create a git tag for the version, push git commits and the created tag, and push the `.gem` file to [rubygems.org](https://rubygems.org).

+ TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR USE, REPRODUCTION, AND DISTRIBUTION
6
+
7
+ 1. Definitions.
8
+
9
+ "License" shall mean the terms and conditions for use, reproduction,
10
+ and distribution as defined by Sections 1 through 9 of this document.
11
+
12
+ "Licensor" shall mean the copyright owner or entity authorized by
13
+ the copyright owner that is granting the License.
14
+
15
+ "Legal Entity" shall mean the union of the acting entity and all
16
+ other entities that control, are controlled by, or are under common
17
+ control with that entity. For the purposes of this definition,
18
+ "control" means (i) the power, direct or indirect, to cause the
19
+ direction or management of such entity, whether by contract or
20
+ otherwise, or (ii) ownership of fifty percent (50%) or more of the
21
+ outstanding shares, or (iii) beneficial ownership of such entity.
22
+
23
+ "You" (or "Your") shall mean an individual or Legal Entity
24
+ exercising permissions granted by this License.
25
+
26
+ "Source" form shall mean the preferred form for making modifications,
27
+ including but not limited to software source code, documentation
28
+ source, and configuration files.
29
+
30
+ "Object" form shall mean any form resulting from mechanical
31
+ transformation or translation of a Source form, including but
32
+ not limited to compiled object code, generated documentation,
33
+ and conversions to other media types.
34
+
35
+ "Work" shall mean the work of authorship, whether in Source or
36
+ Object form, made available under the License, as indicated by a
37
+ copyright notice that is included in or attached to the work
38
+ (an example is provided in the Appendix below).
39
+
40
+ "Derivative Works" shall mean any work, whether in Source or Object
41
+ form, that is based on (or derived from) the Work and for which the
42
+ editorial revisions, annotations, elaborations, or other modifications
43
+ represent, as a whole, an original work of authorship. For the purposes
44
+ of this License, Derivative Works shall not include works that remain
45
+ separable from, or merely link (or bind by name) to the interfaces of,
46
+ the Work and Derivative Works thereof.
47
+
48
+ "Contribution" shall mean any work of authorship, including
49
+ the original version of the Work and any modifications or additions
50
+ to that Work or Derivative Works thereof, that is intentionally
51
+ submitted to Licensor for inclusion in the Work by the copyright owner
52
+ or by an individual or Legal Entity authorized to submit on behalf of
53
+ the copyright owner. For the purposes of this definition, "submitted"
54
+ means any form of electronic, verbal, or written communication sent
55
+ to the Licensor or its representatives, including but not limited to
56
+ communication on electronic mailing lists, source code control systems,
57
+ and issue tracking systems that are managed by, or on behalf of, the
58
+ Licensor for the purpose of discussing and improving the Work, but
59
+ excluding communication that is conspicuously marked or otherwise
60
+ designated in writing by the copyright owner as "Not a Contribution."
61
+
62
+ "Contributor" shall mean Licensor and any individual or Legal Entity
63
+ on behalf of whom a Contribution has been received by Licensor and
64
+ subsequently incorporated within the Work.
65
+
66
+ 2. Grant of Copyright License. Subject to the terms and conditions of
67
+ this License, each Contributor hereby grants to You a perpetual,
68
+ worldwide, non-exclusive, no-charge, royalty-free, irrevocable
69
+ copyright license to reproduce, prepare Derivative Works of,
70
+ publicly display, publicly perform, sublicense, and distribute the
71
+ Work and such Derivative Works in Source or Object form.
72
+
73
+ 3. Grant of Patent License. Subject to the terms and conditions of
74
+ this License, each Contributor hereby grants to You a perpetual,
75
+ worldwide, non-exclusive, no-charge, royalty-free, irrevocable
76
+ (except as stated in this section) patent license to make, have made,
77
+ use, offer to sell, sell, import, and otherwise transfer the Work,
78
+ where such license applies only to those patent claims licensable
79
+ by such Contributor that are necessarily infringed by their
80
+ Contribution(s) alone or by combination of their Contribution(s)
81
+ with the Work to which such Contribution(s) was submitted. If You
82
+ institute patent litigation against any entity (including a
83
+ cross-claim or counterclaim in a lawsuit) alleging that the Work
84
+ or a Contribution incorporated within the Work constitutes direct
85
+ or contributory patent infringement, then any patent licenses
86
+ granted to You under this License for that Work shall terminate
87
+ as of the date such litigation is filed.
88
+
89
+ 4. Redistribution. You may reproduce and distribute copies of the
90
+ Work or Derivative Works thereof in any medium, with or without
91
+ modifications, and in Source or Object form, provided that You
92
+ meet the following conditions:
93
+
94
+ (a) You must give any other recipients of the Work or
95
+ Derivative Works a copy of this License; and
96
+
97
+ (b) You must cause any modified files to carry prominent notices
98
+ stating that You changed the files; and
99
+
100
+ (c) You must retain, in the Source form of any Derivative Works
101
+ that You distribute, all copyright, patent, trademark, and
102
+ attribution notices from the Source form of the Work,
103
+ excluding those notices that do not pertain to any part of
104
+ the Derivative Works; and
105
+
106
+ (d) If the Work includes a "NOTICE" text file as part of its
107
+ distribution, then any Derivative Works that You distribute must
108
+ include a readable copy of the attribution notices contained
109
+ within such NOTICE file, excluding those notices that do not
110
+ pertain to any part of the Derivative Works, in at least one
111
+ of the following places: within a NOTICE text file distributed
112
+ as part of the Derivative Works; within the Source form or
113
+ documentation, if provided along with the Derivative Works; or,
114
+ within a display generated by the Derivative Works, if and
115
+ wherever such third-party notices normally appear. The contents
116
+ of the NOTICE file are for informational purposes only and
117
+ do not modify the License. You may add Your own attribution
118
+ notices within Derivative Works that You distribute, alongside
119
+ or as an addendum to the NOTICE text from the Work, provided
120
+ that such additional attribution notices cannot be construed
121
+ as modifying the License.
122
+
123
+ You may add Your own copyright statement to Your modifications and
124
+ may provide additional or different license terms and conditions
125
+ for use, reproduction, or distribution of Your modifications, or
126
+ for any such Derivative Works as a whole, provided Your use,
127
+ reproduction, and distribution of the Work otherwise complies with
128
+ the conditions stated in this License.
129
+
130
+ 5. Submission of Contributions. Unless You explicitly state otherwise,
131
+ any Contribution intentionally submitted for inclusion in the Work
132
+ by You to the Licensor shall be under the terms and conditions of
133
+ this License, without any additional terms or conditions.
134
+ Notwithstanding the above, nothing herein shall supersede or modify
135
+ the terms of any separate license agreement you may have executed
136
+ with Licensor regarding such Contributions.
137
+
138
+ 6. Trademarks. This License does not grant permission to use the trade
139
+ names, trademarks, service marks, or product names of the Licensor,
140
+ except as required for reasonable and customary use in describing the
141
+ origin of the Work and reproducing the content of the NOTICE file.
142
+
143
+ 7. Disclaimer of Warranty. Unless required by applicable law or
144
+ agreed to in writing, Licensor provides the Work (and each
145
+ Contributor provides its Contributions) on an "AS IS" BASIS,
146
+ WITHOUT WARRANTIES OR CONDITIONS OF ANY KIND, either express or
147
+ implied, including, without limitation, any warranties or conditions
148
+ of TITLE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, MERCHANTABILITY, or FITNESS FOR A
149
+ PARTICULAR PURPOSE. You are solely responsible for determining the
150
+ appropriateness of using or redistributing the Work and assume any
151
+ risks associated with Your exercise of permissions under this License.
152
+
153
+ 8. Limitation of Liability. In no event and under no legal theory,
154
+ whether in tort (including negligence), contract, or otherwise,
155
+ unless required by applicable law (such as deliberate and grossly
156
+ negligent acts) or agreed to in writing, shall any Contributor be
157
+ liable to You for damages, including any direct, indirect, special,
158
+ incidental, or consequential damages of any character arising as a
159
+ result of this License or out of the use or inability to use the
160
+ Work (including but not limited to damages for loss of goodwill,
161
+ work stoppage, computer failure or malfunction, or any and all
162
+ other commercial damages or losses), even if such Contributor
163
+ has been advised of the possibility of such damages.
164
+
165
+ 9. Accepting Warranty or Additional Liability. While redistributing
166
+ the Work or Derivative Works thereof, You may choose to offer,
167
+ and charge a fee for, acceptance of support, warranty, indemnity,
168
+ or other liability obligations and/or rights consistent with this
169
+ License. However, in accepting such obligations, You may act only
170
+ on Your own behalf and on Your sole responsibility, not on behalf
171
+ of any other Contributor, and only if You agree to indemnify,
172
+ defend, and hold each Contributor harmless for any liability
173
+ incurred by, or claims asserted against, such Contributor by reason
174
+ of your accepting any such warranty or additional liability.
175
+
176
+ END OF TERMS AND CONDITIONS
177
+
178
+ APPENDIX: How to apply the Apache License to your work.

9
+ Provides the basic functionality to interact with the Collatz conjecture.
10
+ The parameterisation uses the same `(P,a,b)` notation as Conway's generalisations.
11
+ Besides the function and reverse function, there is also functionality to retrieve the hailstone sequence, the "stopping time"/"total stopping time", or tree-graph.
12

+ [Ruby](https://www.ruby-lang.org/) and gems (packages) at [rubygems](https://rubygems.org/). For as established and wide spread a language as ruby is, especially with [Ruby on Rails](https://rubyonrails.org/), I'm surprised to see that the ruby [community](https://www.ruby-lang.org/en/community/) page includes a link to a [discord](https://discord.gg/EnSevaRfct). There's a [ruby version manager](http://rvm.io/), [guides on gem creation](https://guides.rubygems.org/), and [bundler](https://bundler.io/). We can install ruby on ubuntu with `sudo apt install ruby-full` and on windows with [rubyinstaller](https://rubyinstaller.org/), although the [documentation/installation](https://www.ruby-lang.org/en/documentation/installation/) lists a lot of other alternatives!
3
+
4
+ In terms of "trending ruby repos" on github, there's quite a few. We'll have a look through these examples;
5
+ * [ruby/ruby](https://github.com/ruby/ruby)
6

14
+ * [Shopify/shopify_app](https://github.com/Shopify/shopify_app)
15
+
16
+ We can follow [Make your own Gem](https://guides.rubygems.org/make-your-own-gem/).
17
+
18
+ There are some useful looking github actions; [ruby/setup-ruby](https://github.com/marketplace/actions/setup-ruby-jruby-and-truffleruby) and [ruby/setup-ruby-pkgs](https://github.com/marketplace/actions/setup-ruby-pkgs). And also have a look at the GitHub [Working with the RubyGems registry](https://docs.github.com/en/packages/working-with-a-github-packages-registry/working-with-the-rubygems-registry). The github page makes mention of bundler as well, so it's worth more so having a look at [How to create a Ruby gem with Bundler](https://bundler.io/guides/creating_gem.html), which itself links to [Common practices for developing gems](https://guides.rubygems.org/patterns/). First, we'll need to install it; [`gem install bundler`](https://rubygems.org/gems/bundler). Having run it in my WSL (with sudo), it seems the same issue that happened with maven in WSL and windows has happened with `bundler`, as `which bundle` yields `/usr/local/bin/bundle`, but trying to `bundle --version` yields `/mnt/c/Ruby/3.1/bin/bundle: line 6: /mnt/c/Ruby/3.1/bin/ruby: No such file or directory`. As expected, `type bundle` comes back with `bundle is hashed (/mnt/c/Ruby/3.1/bin/bundle)`. A quick `hash -r bundle` and `bundle --version` now correctly returns `Bundler version 2.3.21`.
19
+
20
+ We should now be able to follow the [How to create a Ruby gem with Bundler](https://bundler.io/guides/creating_gem.html) page and run `bundle gem collatz`. Running it asked a bunch of questions that I wasn't necessarily ready to answer with any particular intention, so my choice of `rspec` for `bundle config gem.test` (out of `rspec/minitest/test-unit/(none)`), and `rubocop` for `bundle config gem.linter` (out of `rubocop/standard/(none)`) weren't informed, although the choice of `github` for `bundle config gem.ci` (out of `github/travis/gitlab/circle/(none)`) obviously was. Having already chosen the Apache License v2, I obviously said `n` to adding the MIT license, although selected `y` to adding a code of conduct and changelog to see what it would generate for the output of these. Running it generated all the output files in a `collatz` subdirectory from where I already was in the `~/Collatz/ruby/` folder, so I'll have to merge stuff down a folder.
21
+
22
+ In terms of what it added, post merging down a folder, besides all the other decorating files, we have (besides the README instructions);
23
+ * `~/.rspec` (RSpec testing)
24
+ * `~/.rubocop.yml` (RuboCop linter)
25
+ * `~/collatz.gemspec` (description file of the gem)
26
+ * `~/Gemfile` (Bundler declarative dependencies)
27
+ * `~/Gemfile.lock` (Bundler imperative dependencies)
28
+ * `~/Rakefile` (Ruby's official task running makefile)
29
+ * `~/bin/console` (Bundler script)
30
+ * `~/bin/setup` (Bundler script)
31
+ * `~/lib/collatz.rb` (what is loaded from a `require "collatz"` invocation)
32
+ * `~/lib/collatz/version.rb` (project's version as an object instance _in-code_)
33
+ * `~/sig/collatz.rbs` (Signature)
34
+ * `~/spec/collatz_spec.rb` (RSpec testing)
35
+ * `~/spec/spec_helper.rb` (RSpec testing)
36
+
37
+ From the [Make your own Gem](https://guides.rubygems.org/make-your-own-gem/) guide, we can see that the `~/collatz.gemspec` (description file of the gem) and `~/lib/collatz.rb` (what is loaded from a `require "collatz"` invocation) are the most fundamental pieces of the package. Anything else under `~/lib/` is just the normal code of the package, and it seems `~/lib/collatz/version.rb` is just a convenient way of only writing it in one place, similar to the python version file. The `~/Rakefile` is a "Ruby Makefile" to run [`rake`](https://github.com/ruby/rake) commands, with `rake` being a general task runner for Ruby. The [`~/Gemfile`](https://bundler.io/man/gemfile.5.html) is a bundler file for listing the declarative dependencies, mostly in the form of required gems. The `~/Gemfile.lock` is an imperative stateful instantiation of the [`~/Gemfile`](https://bundler.io/man/gemfile.5.html).
38
+
39
+ Both files in the `~/spec/` folder and the `~/.rspec` file are RSpec testing files, which was what we chose in `bundle config gem.test` (out of `rspec/minitest/test-unit/(none)`) where `minitest` is the ruby default OotB testing framework. From looking at the examples on the guide using minitest versus what bundler generated for the choice of rspec, it seems that the choice impacts what is required in the rakefile, how it sets up the "test task" and how it knows where to look for the files to interpret under which ever testing framework was chosen. I'm not immediately a huge fan of the "acceptance testing" style of the rspec testing over the "expect"-esque style of the minitest framework, so I might swap to that later. Both `~/bin/` files are ignored by the `~/collatz.gemspec` dynamic determination of the `spec.files` field. The guide for creating a gem mentions bin files being included, so it seems the bundler default is to ignore the potential of wanting to add a binary file over what it considers the most beneficial way of setting itself up with the bin scripts. I'm not sure how easily they could be removed, i.e. how that would break bundler commands, but I imagine there'd be no way to keep them if wanting to remove the bin exclusion from the `spec.files` to actually include an executable with the gem.
40
+
41
+ The `~/.rubocop.yml` is a config for the `rubocop` choice we made for `bundle config gem.linter` (out of `rubocop/standard/(none)`), and there is an entry for a task in the rakefile to run this linter. I'm not sure yet what requires or expects the `~/sig/collatz.rbs` file, but its [`rbs`](https://github.com/ruby/rbs) extension is ruby official. Asking the ruby discord reveals that it's a pretty new feature and entirely optional. Although signature / type interfacing has been provided by gems like sorbet for a long time, the ruby official rbs itself is new.
42
+
43
+ Now that we have a small understanding of what is going on with the files, let's try and set up a "Hello World" package with v0.0.1 to release to GitHub packages to get that part of the workflow set up. After trying to run `bundle exec rake` a few times to test the output and verify that it works, I've realised how grossly verbose RuboCop is, and it might be worthwhile switching to standard instead. As much as I don't like [Black](https://black.readthedocs.io/en/stable/) (the python strict linter), I wonder if [standard](https://github.com/testdouble/standard), which is also strict, would be passable. Well, either way, I had to explicitly disable the `Lint/ScriptPermission` cop, as it was not recommended as a missing cop locally or in github, but was still causing the workflow to fail with `bin/console:1:1: w: lint/scriptpermission: script file console doesn't have execute permission.`, which was _NOT_ fixed by following [this rubocop issue](https://github.com/rubocop/rubocop/issues/4526). We've got to manually add the `spec.license = "Apache-2.0"` in the gempsec.
44
+
45
+ [Publishing your gem](https://guides.rubygems.org/publishing/) makes mention of "PUBLISHING TO RUBYGEMS.ORG" which includes signing up at [rubygems](https://rubygems.org/users/new), then running `gem push <pkgame-version.gem>`, which will generate a `~/.gem/credentials` the first time it's run after asking for your credentials that were used to sign up. As we obviously can't commit that sort of file, we'll need to run [`gem signin`](https://guides.rubygems.org/command-reference/#gem-signin) to get the right credentials file. If you're like me and using an older version of ruby, then an email to your account may prompt you to run `gem update --system`, but it's also then worth visiting [profile/api_keys](https://rubygems.org/profile/api_keys) to restrict the scopes of the key that's just been generated. The contents of the `~/.gem/credentials` file look like;
46
+ ```yaml
47
+ ---
48
+ :rubygems_api_key: rubygems_0123456789abcdef0123456789abcdef0123456789abcdef
49
+ ```
50
+ While the [GitHub: Working with the RubyGems registry](https://docs.github.com/en/packages/working-with-a-github-packages-registry/working-with-the-rubygems-registry) guide includes mention of the expecation for the file to look like;
51
+ ```yaml
52
+ ---
53
+ :github: Bearer <PAT|TOKEN>
54
+ ```
55
+ We can `base64 ~/.gem/credentials` the rubygems_api_key we got from the `gem signin`, add the string (without the newlines) to our github secrets, and then do something like `echo -n "$RUBYGEMS_API_KEY_BASE64" | base64 --decode > ~/.gem/credentials` to recreate the credentials. GitHub's credentials should be passable with a `echo -e "---\n:github: Bearer <PAT|TOKEN>" > ~/.gem/credentials`.
