# webolator
24
+
25
+
Turn a folder of markdown, or a single `.md` file, into a browsable website. No config file, no index file, no `SUMMARY.md`.
26
+
27
+
- **Zero config.** Point it at a folder and the navigation comes from the directory tree. Page titles come from the first `# heading`.
28
+
- **Mermaid.** ```` ```mermaid ```` blocks become diagrams, rendered in the browser.
29
+
- **Syntax highlighting** happens at build time (syntect), with light and dark themes and no JavaScript.
30
+
- **Cross-file links work.** `other.md`, `dir/`, `../x.md#some-heading` and `/root/relative.md` are rewritten to the right pages and anchors. Broken links print a warning.
31
+
- **Sibling files are kept.** Raw `.html`, `.txt`/`.log`/code files, PDFs and images are copied and linked. HTML, text and PDF files also appear in the sidebar.
32
+
- **`--single`** writes one self-contained `.html` with everything embedded (images, text files, HTML files, PDFs), which is easy to email or attach.
33
+
- **`--serve`** runs a local preview with live reload.
34
+
- GitHub-flavored markdown: tables, task lists, footnotes, strikethrough, autolinks and `> [!NOTE]` alerts.
35
+
- Light and dark mode follow the OS setting.

## Installation
38
+
39
+
### Using uv (easiest)
40
+
41
+
Install the published wheel from PyPI as a standalone tool:
42
+
43
+
```bash
44
+
uv tool install webolator
45
+
```
46
+
47
+
This puts the `webolator` command on your PATH. To try it without installing anything:
48
+
49
+
```bash
50
+
uvx webolator docs/ --serve
51
+
```
52
+
53
+
### Pre-built binaries
54
+
55
+
Download the latest release for your platform from the [GitHub Releases](https://github.com/vivainio/webolator/releases) page:
56
+
57
+
- **Linux (x86_64)**: `webolator-linux-x86_64.tar.gz`
58
+
- **Windows (x86_64)**: `webolator-windows-x86_64.zip`
59
+
- **macOS (Intel)**: `webolator-macos-x86_64.tar.gz`
60
+
- **macOS (Apple Silicon)**: `webolator-macos-arm64.tar.gz`
61
+
62
+
Extract the archive and place the `webolator` binary in your PATH.
63
+
64
+
### From source
65
+
66
+
```bash
67
+
cargo install --git https://github.com/vivainio/webolator
68
+
```
69
+
70
+
## Usage
71
+
72
+
```bash
73
+
webolator docs/ # static site in ./site
74
+
webolator docs/ -o public # ...or somewhere else
75
+
webolator docs/ --single # one self-contained docs.html
76
+
webolator notes.md --single # a single file, plus anything it links to
77
+
webolator docs/ --serve # http://127.0.0.1:8000 with live reload
78
+
```
79
+
80
+
Try it on the bundled demo:
81
+
82
+
```bash
83
+
cargo run -- examples/demo --serve
84
+
```
85
+
86
+
### How the site is put together
87
+
88
+
| Source | Result |
89
+
|---|---|
90
+
| `index.md` or `README.md` in a folder | that folder's `index.html` |
91
+
| folder with no index | a generated listing page |
92
+
| `foo.md` | `foo.html` (or `foo.md.html` if a raw `foo.html` already exists) |
93
+
| any other file | copied as is |
94
+
| hidden files and folders, `node_modules`, `target`, `venv` | skipped |
95
+
96
+
If you pass a **single file**, webolator follows its local links, including links to parent folders. The site then contains that file, which becomes the home page, plus everything reachable from it.
97
+
98
+
In **`--single` mode**, each page becomes a section with hash routing, so the back and forward buttons and deep links like `docs.html#p-guide-install--setup` work. Images are inlined. Linked HTML files are shown in an iframe and text files as preformatted text, and PDFs and other files open from embedded blobs.

### Mermaid offline
101
+
102
+
By default mermaid.js is loaded from the jsDelivr CDN, and only on pages that contain a diagram. To work fully offline, pass a local copy:
103
+
104
+
```bash
105
+
webolator docs/ --single --mermaid-js mermaid.min.js
106
+
```
107
+
108
+
In static mode the file is copied to `_webolator/`. In `--single` mode it is inlined.
