# refactrail-core
19
+
20
+
The Rust engine for [RefacTrail](https://github.com/SAMtheROCKET/refactrail),
21
+
the Python refactorizer. It makes `refactrail check`, `lint` and `format`
22
+
faster with output identical to RefacTrail's Python engine, and is
23
+
installed automatically with RefacTrail.
24
+
25
+
The engine is RefacTrail's own: a Rust lexer, parser, compile checks and
26
+
symbol table, written from the language reference with CPython 3.12 as the
27
+
test oracle. It contains no Ruff code. Neither engine imports or executes
28
+
the checked source. CPython is asked only for the exact message of a file
29
+
that fails to compile, so both engines report it identically.
30
+
31
+
Native wheels (CPython 3.12+ ABI3) cover Windows x86_64, macOS (Apple
32
+
silicon and Intel) and Linux x86_64 and ARM64 (glibc and musl). On any
33
+
other system pip installs this project's small pure-Python fallback wheel
34
+
instead, and RefacTrail uses its Python engine, so installation never
35
+
needs Rust. `--engine auto` (the default) uses the native engine when
36
+
present; `--engine rust` requires it. Parity tests cover the recorded corpora and fuzzed inputs,
37
+
not every possible Python program.
38
+
39
+
Build a wheel with `maturin build --release --locked`. Building requires
40
+
Rust and the locked Cargo dependencies. Release builds must rerun the
41
+
parent package's tests and the parity scripts.
42
+
43
+
The core's own code is MIT licensed. Dependency notices and their upstream
44
+
license declarations are in `THIRD_PARTY_LICENSES`, with an index;
45
+
regenerate them with `scripts/gen_third_party_licenses.py`. Local build
46
+
commands upload nothing.
