It limits both the human and the AI to a turn-based, text-heavy, linear exchange that mirrors how humans talk to each other—not how humans might actually collaborate with intelligence. And even that it does not well — when we talk to humans, we don’t see our words from previous messages floating away in the air as we do with chat UIs. The chat UI of today has remained a primer example of the laziness (and potentially business constraints and lack of imagination) of human designers and product managers who have settled for only a primitive transformation of a human chat to a chat UI. There’s so much more than a chat UI could do to help but no one has done it. May be we will.
