+
+This file provides guidance to Claude Code (claude.ai/code) when working with code in this repository.
+
+## Project Overview
+
+nomos-arc.ai is an AI Orchestrator CLI (`arc` — The Architect) that transforms AI usage into a structured, deterministic engineering system. It manages task lifecycle, plans, reviews, dependency graphs, and semantic search — all through a local-first CLI with traceable, deterministic outputs.
+
+**Important distinction**: The AI models used *inside* the project (Gemini for embeddings/enrichment) are separate from the AI tools used *to develop* the project (Claude Code, Codex). The CLI orchestrates Gemini — it does not embed Claude or OpenAI as runtime dependencies.
+

+### Key Design Decisions
+
+- **Dual state representation**: JSON is the source of truth; Markdown is for human consumption. The CLI must NEVER read from Markdown — only JSON. State lives in `tasks-management/state/`, markdown mirrors in `tasks-management/plans/`.
+- **Convergence logic**: Plan/review cycles terminate when `score >= threshold OR iteration >= max_iterations` to prevent infinite loops.
+- **Rules engine**: Three levels — Global (general), Domain (tech-specific), Task (task-specific) — loaded from `tasks-management/rules/`.
+- **Configurable model routing**: Per command via `.nomos-config.json`.
+- **Security**: Data sanitization (strip secrets via entropy detection before sending to AI), command whitelisting, dry-run mode. `client_secret` is NEVER stored in project config. Resolution: `NOMOS_GOOGLE_CLIENT_SECRET` env var → interactive prompt → persisted in `~/.nomos/credentials.json`.
+- **Shadow branches**: All AI-generated code lives in isolated git worktrees (`nomos/{task-id}` branches) until explicitly approved via `arc apply`.
+- **Integrity chain**: SHA-256 hashes link task → plan → code diff for auditability.
+- **Atomic state writes**: `proper-lockfile` + write → fsync → rename. Stale locks auto-break after 30s.
+- **Binary-agnostic orchestration**: Planner and reviewer are external binaries (claude, codex, or any CLI) spawned via PTY/stdio adapters — `arc` doesn't embed AI SDKs for task execution.
+- **Hybrid search**: Vector scores rank naturally higher; lexical scores capped at 0.85. Search works at every stage of index maturity.
+- **Typed errors**: All domain errors use `NomosError(code, message)` with a union of typed error codes (`NomosErrorCode` in `src/core/errors.ts`). Never throw raw `Error` — always use a specific `NomosErrorCode`.
+- **Zod-validated state**: `StateManager` validates all state reads/writes against Zod schemas. Config also uses Zod (`NomosConfigSchema`). Invalid state is rejected at the boundary.
+- **SIGINT handling**: `cli.ts` sets `process.exitCode = 130` on SIGINT without calling `process.exit()`, allowing the orchestrator's catch block to persist `stalled` state before the process terminates. Tasks are recoverable via `arc plan`.

+### Task ID Convention
+
+Task IDs must match `/^[a-z0-9][a-z0-9-]{1,48}[a-z0-9]$/` — lowercase alphanumeric with hyphens, 3–50 chars.

+### Crash Recovery
+
+If `arc init` fails mid-execution (e.g., SIGKILL), use `arc init <task> --force` to clean up orphaned worktrees and branches before re-initializing.
+
+### Test Organization
+
+- Unit tests are colocated: `src/<module>/__tests__/*.test.ts`
