+ # Contributing to @tintinweb/pi-subagents
2
+
3
+ This guide exists to save both sides time.
4
+
5
+ ## Philosophy
6
+
7
+ `pi-subagents` is a [pi](https://pi.dev) extension, and it tries to stay focused:
8
+ spawn and orchestrate autonomous sub-agents that feel native to pi, and do that
9
+ well. Features that don't serve that goal, or that bolt on unrelated complexity,
10
+ are likely to be declined. When in doubt, open an issue and discuss the idea
11
+ before writing the code.
12
+
13
+ The extension deliberately mirrors Claude Code's tool names, calling
14
+ conventions, and UI patterns. Changes should respect that compatibility unless
15
+ there's a good reason to diverge.
16
+
17
+ ## The One Rule
18
+
19
+ **You must understand your code.** If you cannot explain what your changes do and
20
+ how they interact with the rest of the system, the PR will be closed.
21
+
22
+ Using AI to write code is fine. Submitting AI-generated slop without
23
+ understanding it is not.
24
+
25
+ ## Filing Issues
26
+
27
+ Keep issues short, concrete, and worth reading.
28
+
29
+ - Keep it concise. If it does not fit on one screen, it is too long.
30
+ - Write in your own voice. If you used an LLM to draft it, review and shape it
31
+ yourself before posting.
32
+ - State the bug or request clearly, and explain why it matters.
33
+ - For bugs, include a minimal repro: pi version, this extension's version, your
34
+ agent/config, the steps, and the actual vs. expected behavior.
35
+ - If you want to implement the change yourself, say so.
36
+
37
+ For security issues, do **not** open a public issue — see [SECURITY.md](SECURITY.md).
38
+
39
+ ## Before Submitting a PR
40
+
41
+ For anything beyond a trivial fix, open an issue first so we can agree on the
42
+ approach before you invest the time.
43
+
44
+ Make sure the full check suite passes locally:
45
+
46
+ ```bash
47
+ npm run lint # biome
48
+ npm run typecheck # tsc --noEmit
49
+ npm run test # vitest
50
+ npm run build # tsc
51
+ ```
52
+
53
+ All four must pass. `npm run lint:fix` will auto-fix most style issues, and
54
+ `npm run test:e2e` runs the end-to-end suite if your change touches that surface.
55
+
56
+ Other guidelines:
57
+
58
+ - Keep PRs focused — one logical change per PR. Unrelated refactors make review
59
+ harder and are likely to be split out or declined.
60
+ - Add or update tests for behavior you change.
61
+ - Match the surrounding code style (enforced by biome).
62
+ - Do not edit `CHANGELOG.md`. Changelog entries are added by the maintainer.
63
+ - Update the README when you add or change user-facing behavior.
64
+
65
+ ## Questions?
66
+
67
+ Open an [issue](https://github.com/tintinweb/pi-subagents/issues) — questions and
68
+ discussion are welcome.
