+

Days after its release, on Monday, July 20, the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) and Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, (CDPHE) released updated guidance for reopening schools in Colorado. Two days later, the El Paso County Public Health (EPCPH) revised its guidance requesting local schools not reopen until Aug. 17, allowing for time to better understand the trajectory and impact of COVID-19 cases in El Paso County following the statewide face covering mandate.

Reliable plans are difficult to develop knowing each day brings a host of new statistics, conflicting expert opinion and revised guidance.

Over the last week, we have also been listening to feedback from the diverse perspectives of our community. We continue to revise plans that consider all feedback and input. We are committed to plans that best protect the health and safety of staff and students, offer options to parents and retain the best educational benefit for students. As we work to update our plan and ensure its approach, many have questions and are seeking more clarity. Please know our district administration, along with our school teams, are working tirelessly to update our plans.

In our communication last Friday, we indicated you could expect to hear more information from your school. Yesterday, I asked principals to not provide further communication regarding reopening until we feel plans are in a more stable place.

During these unprecedent times, and under these ever-changing conditions, we know our plan will never be truly final. We must therefore be agile and accept revisions will be necessary in planning for the school year and probably after the school year starts.

At this point, what we do know is the first day of school for students will be delayed by one week. The first day of school for students will now be Aug. 24 (not Aug. 17). It is likely the first several days of school will include a “soft” or “staggered” start bringing in small groups of students each day. This delay will allow more flexibility for planning and preparation and more time to evaluate data.

We do not know what changes may occur in our plan, but we will provide updated information as soon as we can. All changes will be published in the Return to School section of asd20.org, and we will highlight those changes through our 20Alert emails and this eNewsletter.

Many of us feel a sense of urgency for information, especially in this uncertain and changing environment. We ask for patience and grace as we navigate a process to best prepare for a successful start. As I stated last night during the Board of Education meeting, reopening plans could include options of 100% in-person learning, 100% remote learning, or something in between. We continue to evaluate viable options for the best “between” plan.

Be well and be safe.

Respectfully,

Tom Gregory

Superintendent of Schools

Academy District 20

",

For example, if first period runs from 8 – 9 a.m., the expectation is that all students join the class on time and participate in class synchronously for the entire class period.

Teachers will log-in to class from their school classroom, take attendance, and lead classroom activities for the duration of the scheduled class.

Students will attend class and teachers will lead classes according to their daily schedules.

The first day for students is Aug. 24. · Our tentative goal is to transition back to our Return to School Plan on Sept. 14, 2020. This means on Sept. 14, students will begin the hybrid model combined with a synchronous option, per the Return to School Plan following the same schedule used during the remote synchronous period.

Students who are part of our special populations and require additional services, will be served in person. Representatives from the school or district will reach out to these families, individually, to create a return to school plan.

Please remember if your child attends a non-traditional school such as the Home School Academy, The Village, New Opportunities Program, or Aspen Valley Campus their schedule may look different. Please visit each school’s website for more information or look for information from your school principal.

We remain committed to our Return to School Plan (released on Aug. 5, 2020) and its guiding goals. We believe our Return to School Plan transitions well to remote learning for our secondary school learners and that we can smoothly and seamlessly transition back to the Return to School Plan once local COVID-19 data reaches or is trending toward acceptable levels.

Please be aware, there are two weeks until the start of the new school year. As we know, when dealing with COVID-19, a lot can happen at short notice, highlighting the need for all of us to remain flexible. As such, this plan is subject to change based on updated data from EPCPH or other authorities.

Finally, our ability to start on Aug. 24, and our ability to maintain in-person learning is 100% dependent upon our collective actions and decisions. As we prepare to open, I am asking for all members of the ASD20 community to do our part to help ensure that students can be in school. Please help your students avoid meeting with large groups of friends, maintain appropriate social distancing and wear a facial covering in accordance with the state mandate – together, as a community, is the only way this will work. Let us rise to this challenge together.

I am very aware of the frustration and anxiety created by continued changes and uncertainty. I too, desire certainty and a predictable path moving forward. Please know your schools will continue to provide important and more specific information to use when planning. I hope you have a relaxing and enjoyable weekend.

Be well and be safe.

Tom Gregory

Superintendent of Schools

Academy District 20

",

",
