# Contributor Covenant Code of Conduct
2
+
3
+
## Our Pledge
4
+
5
+
In the interest of fostering an open and welcoming environment, we as
6
+
contributors and maintainers pledge to making participation in our project and
7
+
our community a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of age, body
8
+
size, disability, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, level of experience,
9
+
nationality, personal appearance, race, religion, or sexual identity and
10
+
orientation.
11
+
12
+
## Our Standards
13
+
14
+
Examples of behavior that contributes to creating a positive environment
15
+
include:
16
+
17
+
* Using welcoming and inclusive language
18
+
* Being respectful of differing viewpoints and experiences
19
+
* Gracefully accepting constructive criticism
20
+
* Focusing on what is best for the community
21
+
* Showing empathy towards other community members
22
+
23
+
Examples of unacceptable behavior by participants include:
24
+
25
+
* The use of sexualized language or imagery and unwelcome sexual attention or
26
+
advances
27
+
* Trolling, insulting/derogatory comments, and personal or political attacks
28
+
* Public or private harassment
29
+
* Publishing others' private information, such as a physical or electronic
30
+
address, without explicit permission
31
+
* Other conduct which could reasonably be considered inappropriate in a
32
+
professional setting
33
+
34
+
## Our Responsibilities
35
+
36
+
Project maintainers are responsible for clarifying the standards of acceptable
37
+
behavior and are expected to take appropriate and fair corrective action in
38
+
response to any instances of unacceptable behavior.
39
+
40
+
Project maintainers have the right and responsibility to remove, edit, or
41
+
reject comments, commits, code, wiki edits, issues, and other contributions
42
+
that are not aligned to this Code of Conduct, or to ban temporarily or
43
+
permanently any contributor for other behaviors that they deem inappropriate,
44
+
threatening, offensive, or harmful.
45
+
46
+
## Scope
47
+
48
+
This Code of Conduct applies both within project spaces and in public spaces
49
+
when an individual is representing the project or its community. Examples of
50
+
representing a project or community include using an official project e-mail
51
+
address, posting via an official social media account, or acting as an appointed
52
+
representative at an online or offline event. Representation of a project may be
53
+
further defined and clarified by project maintainers.
54
+
55
+
## Enforcement
56
+
57
+
Instances of abusive, harassing, or otherwise unacceptable behavior may be
58
+
reported by contacting the project team at philipp@tessenow.org. All
59
+
complaints will be reviewed and investigated and will result in a response that
60
+
is deemed necessary and appropriate to the circumstances. The project team is
61
+
obligated to maintain confidentiality with regard to the reporter of an incident.
62
+
Further details of specific enforcement policies may be posted separately.
63
+
64
+
Project maintainers who do not follow or enforce the Code of Conduct in good
65
+
faith may face temporary or permanent repercussions as determined by other
66
+
members of the project's leadership.
67
+
68
+

# SqlToCsvStream
2
+
3
+
This is your favorite gem to produce CSV or JSON directly from SQL queries.
4
+
It queries a PostgreSQL with a [`COPY`](https://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/sql-copy.html) statement and streams the result as CSV/JSON directly into a ruby enumerator.
5
+
6
+
This gem can be used in all ruby applications, but ships with a special renderer for Rails to easily render downloads from your rails controller.
7
+
8
+
Note: This is project is still in a proof-of-concept phase. We may rename some things, make the code more readable and very likely add some tests :)
9
+
10
+
## Installation
11
+
12
+
Add this line to your application's Gemfile:
13
+
14
+
```ruby
15
+
gem 'sql_to_csv_stream'
16
+
```
17
+
18
+
And then execute:
19
+
20
+
$ bundle
21
+
22
+
Or install it yourself as:
23
+
24
+
$ gem install sql_to_csv_stream
25
+
26
+
If you use rails, you may register the new stream renderers in an initializer.
27
+
28
+
```ruby
29
+
require 'sql_to_csv_stream'
30
+
31
+
SqlToCsvStream.register_rails_renderer
32
+
```
33
+
34
+
## Usage
35
+
36
+
In Rails, you can use the stream renderer from a Controller:
37
+
38
+
```ruby
39
+
class UsersController < ApplicationController
40
+
def index
41
+
@users = User.all.where(deleted_at: null)
42
+
43
+
respond_to do |format|
44
+
format.csv do
45
+
render csv_stream: @users, filename: 'users.csv'
46
+
end
47
+
format.json do
48
+
render json_stream: @users, filename: 'users.json'
49
+
end
50
+
end
51
+
end
52
+
end
53
+
```
54
+
55
+
This, unlike many other CSV/JSON rendering techniques, instantly sends results to the user by streaming the content while it is being generated.
56
+
This is light on memory. By streaming the data instantly, even large files (that need longer to generate than the HTTP server connection timeout value) can be produced without the connection being interrupted by a connection timeout.
57
+
58
+
The streaming renderer automatically responds with a gzipped encoding if the client accepts it. This drastically reduces file sizes we need to send over the wire.
59
+
60
+
Any SQL string the PostgreSQL [`COPY` command](https://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/sql-copy.html) accepts can be given to the renderer.
61
+
Alternatively, any object may be given that produces such SQL on `.to_sql` or `to_s`.
62
+
So you can use your favorite query-object pattern :)
63
+
64
+
If you are not in Rails or want to process CSV/JSON in any other way from within Rails, you can use the `*Enumerator` classes.
65
+
66
+
```ruby
67
+
file = File.open('users.csv', 'w')
68
+
SqlToCsvStream::CsvEnumerator.new('SELECT * FROM users;').each do |csv_row|
69
+
file.write
70
+
end
71
+
file.close
72
+
```
73
+
74
+
Or write the compressed file with:
75
+
76
+
```ruby
77
+
csv_enum = SqlToCsvStream::CsvEnumerator.new('SELECT * FROM users;')
78
+
zip_enum = SqlToCsvStream::GzipWrapper.new(csv_enum)
79
+
80
+
file = File.open('users.csv.gz', 'w')
81
+
zip_enum.each do |csv_row|
82
+
file.write
83
+
end
84
+
file.close
85
+
```
86
+
87
+
Writing a JSON file works similarly:
88
+
89
+
```ruby
90
+
file = File.open('users.json', 'w')
91
+
SqlToCsvStream::JsonEnumerator.new('SELECT * FROM users;').each do |csv_row|
92
+
file.write
93
+
end
94
+
file.close
95
+
```
96
+
97
+
For more options, see the class documentation of the `CsvEnumerator` or `JsonEnumerator` class.
98
+
99
+
## Development
100
+
101
+
After checking out the repo, run `bin/setup` to install dependencies. Then, run `rake spec` to run the tests. You can also run `bin/console` for an interactive prompt that will allow you to experiment.
102
+
103
+
To install this gem onto your local machine, run `bundle exec rake install`. To release a new version, update the version number in `version.rb`, and then run `bundle exec rake release`, which will create a git tag for the version, push git commits and tags, and push the `.gem` file to [rubygems.org](https://rubygems.org).

## Previous work
119
+
120
+
We didn't invent streaming, nor did we were the first to have the idea to integrate this in ruby and/or rails. Some previous approaches are described [here](https://shift.infinite.red/fast-csv-report-generation-with-postgres-in-rails-d444d9b915ab), [here](https://www.smartly.io/blog/streaming-data-with-ruby-enumerators), [here](https://medium.com/table-xi/stream-csv-files-in-rails-because-you-can-46c212159ab7), or [here](https://gist.github.com/stereoscott/6996507). We are thankful for the previous work done which led us into the right direction and enabled us to (hopefully) improve upon it.
