# Sinatra::GithubWebhooks [](https://travis-ci.org/chrismytton/sinatra-github_webhooks)
2
+
3
+
Helper methods for receiving [GitHub webhooks](https://developer.github.com/webhooks/) with Sinatra.
4
+
5
+
## Installation
6
+
7
+
Add this line to your application's Gemfile:
8
+
9
+
```ruby
10
+
gem 'sinatra-github_webhooks'
11
+
```
12
+
13
+
And then execute:
14
+
15
+
$ bundle
16
+
17
+
Or install it yourself as:
18
+
19
+
$ gem install sinatra-github_webhooks
20
+
21
+
## Usage
22
+
23
+
This module provides two methods to use when handling GitHub webhook requests:
24
+
25
+
- `github_event` This is the value of the `X-Github-Event` header in the request, e.g. `pull_request`
26
+
- `payload` This is a Hash of the request body after being parsed.
27
+
28
+
If you provided a webhook secret when you configured your GitHub webhook you can ensure the request comes from GitHub by setting `github_webhook_secret`.
29
+
30
+
Using this extension in classic style Sinatra apps is as simple as requiring the extension, optionally defining `github_webhook_secret` for verifying webhooks, and using the methods:
31
+
32
+
```ruby
33
+
require 'sinatra'
34
+
require 'sinatra/github_webhooks'
35
+
36
+
configure do
37
+
set :github_webhook_secret, 's3cret'
38
+
end
39
+
40
+
get '/event_handler' do
41
+
github_event # Value of the X-Github-Event header
42
+
payload # Hash of the request body
43
+
44
+
if github_event == 'pull_request' && payload['action'] == 'opened'
45
+
# Do something in response to a newly opened Pull Request.
46
+
end
47
+
'ok'
48
+
end
49
+
```
50
+
51
+
Sinatra::Base subclasses need to require and include the module explicitly using the `helpers` method:
52
+
53
+
```ruby
54
+
require 'sinatra/base'
55
+
require 'sinatra/github_webhooks'
56
+
57
+
class WebhookApp < Sinatra::Base
58
+
helpers Sinatra::GithubWebhooks
59
+
60
+
configure do
61
+
set :github_webhook_secret, 's3cret'
62
+
end
63
+
64
+
get '/event_handler' do
65
+
github_event # Value of the X-Github-Event header
66
+
payload # Hash of the request body
67
+
68
+
if github_event == 'pull_request' && payload['action'] == 'opened'
69
+
# Do something in response to a newly opened Pull Request.
70
+
end
71
+
'ok'
72
+
end
73
+
end
74
+
```
75
+
76
+
## Development
77
+
78
+
After checking out the repo, run `bin/setup` to install dependencies. Then, run `rake test` to run the tests. You can also run `bin/console` for an interactive prompt that will allow you to experiment.
79
+
80
+
To install this gem onto your local machine, run `bundle exec rake install`. To release a new version, update the version number in `version.rb`, and then run `bundle exec rake release`, which will create a git tag for the version, push git commits and tags, and push the `.gem` file to [rubygems.org](https://rubygems.org).
