# schepherd
2
+
3
+
Schepherd delivers a chosen JSON Schema from a pinned OCI catalog to a
4
+
verified local file, and can hand that file to the validator you already use.
5
+
6
+
This gem contains the native `schepherd` binary of every supported platform
7
+
and a small Ruby executable that runs the one built for your system. It
8
+
contains no schemas and no catalogs: those are fetched from the OCI registry
9
+
you configure and verified by digest.
10
+
11
+
```sh
12
+
gem install schepherd
13
+
schepherd --help
14
+
```
15
+
16
+
With Bundler:
17
+
18
+
```ruby
19
+
gem "schepherd", require: false
20
+
```
21
+
22
+
```sh
23
+
bundle exec schepherd --help
24
+
```
25
+
26
+
## Platforms
27
+
28
+
| Platform | Binary in the gem | Status |
29
+
| ------------------ | ------------------------------- | ------------ |
30
+
| Linux x64 | `libexec/schepherd-linux-x64` | Supported |
31
+
| Linux arm64 | `libexec/schepherd-linux-arm64` | Supported |
32
+
| macOS x64, arm64 | `libexec/schepherd-darwin-*` | Experimental |
33
+
| Windows x64, arm64 | `libexec/schepherd-windows-*` | Experimental |
34
+
35
+
The binaries are the same files as in the GitHub release archives of the
36
+
version, cross-compiled from one commit. The Linux binaries are static, so
37
+
they run on glibc and musl systems alike; the macOS binaries need macOS 13
38
+
or later. The gem needs Ruby 2.7 or later and has no dependencies.
39
+
40
+
## Notes
41
+
42
+
- The executable replaces itself with the binary: arguments, standard input
43
+
and output, and the exit status are those of `schepherd` itself.
44
+
- On a platform without a prebuilt binary, set `SCHEPHERD_BINARY` to the
45
+
absolute path of a `schepherd` binary built for it.
46
+
- The gem never downloads anything.
47
+
- `THIRD_PARTY_LICENSES.txt` holds the license texts of the third-party code
48
+
linked into the binaries.
49
+
- Pre-releases (`X.Y.Z.alpha.N`, `X.Y.Z.beta.N`, `X.Y.Z.rc.N`) are installed
50
+
only with `--pre` or an exact version, for example
51
+
`gem install schepherd -v 0.2.0.rc.1`.
