# ruby-clock
2
+
3
+
ruby-clock is a [job scheduler](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Job_scheduler),
4
+
known by heroku as a [clock process](https://devcenter.heroku.com/articles/scheduled-jobs-custom-clock-processes).
5
+
In many cases it can replace the use of cron.
6
+
7
+
This gem is very small with very few lines of code. For all its scheduling capabilities,
8
+
it relies on the venerable [rufus-scheduler](https://github.com/jmettraux/rufus-scheduler/).
9
+
rufus-scheduler
10
+
[does not aim to be a standalone process or a cron replacement](https://github.com/jmettraux/rufus-scheduler/issues/307),
11
+
ruby-clock does.
12
+
13
+
Jobs are all run in their own parallel threads within the same process.
14
+
15
+
The clock process will respond to signals INT (^c at the command line) and
16
+
TERM (signal sent by environments such as Heroku and other PaaS's when shutting down).
17
+
In both cases, the clock will stop running jobs and give existing jobs 29 seconds
18
+
to stop before killing them.
19
+
20
+
## Installation
21
+
22
+
Add these lines to your application's Gemfile:
23
+
24
+
```ruby
25
+
gem 'ruby-clock'
26
+
27
+
# ruby-clock currently depends on rufus-scheduler master
28
+
git_source(:github) {|repo_name| "https://github.com/#{repo_name}" }
29
+
gem 'rufus-scheduler', github: 'jmettraux/rufus-scheduler'
30
+
```
31
+
32
+
And then execute:
33
+
34
+
$ bundle install
35
+
36
+
Or install it yourself as:
37
+
38
+
$ gem install ruby-clock
39
+
40
+
## Usage
41
+
42
+
Write a file with your scheduled jobs in it, named Clockfile. The DSL and capabilities
43
+
are the same as those of [rufus-scheduler](https://github.com/jmettraux/rufus-scheduler/).
44
+
Read the rufus-scheduler documentation to see what you can do.
45
+
46
+
```ruby
47
+
schedule.every('5 minutes') do
48
+
UserDataReports.generate
49
+
end
50
+
51
+
# do something every day, five minutes after midnight
52
+
scheduler.cron '5 0 * * *' do
53
+
DailyActivitySummary.generate_and_send
54
+
end
55
+
```
56
+
57
+
To start your clock process:
58
+
59
+
bundle exec clock
60
+
61
+
### Rails
62
+
63
+
To run your clock process in your app's environment:
64
+
65
+
bundle exec rails runner clock
66
+
67
+
### Non-Rails
68
+
69
+
Require your app's code at the top of Clockfile:
70
+
71
+
```ruby
72
+
require_relative './lib/app.rb'
73
+
schedule.every('5 minutes') do
74
+
...
75
+
```
76
+
77
+
### Heroku and other PaaS's
78
+
79
+
Add this line to your Procfile
80
+
81
+
```
82
+
clock: bundle exec rails runer clock
83
+
```
84
+
85
+

### rufus-scheduler Options
96
+
97
+
All rufus-scheduler options are set to defaults. The `schedule` variable
98
+
Available in your Clockfile is and instance of `Rufus::Scheduler`,
99
+
so anything you can do on this instance, you can do in your Clockfile.
100
+
101
+
Perhaps in the future ruby-clock will add some easier specific configuration
102
+
capabilities for some things. Let me know if you have a request!
