# Multicfg
2
+
3
+
A little helper library for Ruby programs that need to load configuration from
4
+
multiple sources.
5
+
6
+
You pass it a list of file names or IOs or hashes, and it returns a Hash-like
7
+
object which consists of options loaded from all those places. It can also
8
+
optionally filter the supplied hashes by some prefix, and it will deep-merge.
9
+
10
+
## Installation
11
+
12
+
Add this line to your application's Gemfile:
13
+
14
+
```ruby
15
+
gem 'multicfg'
16
+
```
17
+
18
+
And then execute:
19
+
20
+
$ bundle
21
+
22
+
Or install it yourself as:
23
+
24
+
$ gem install multicfg
25
+
26
+
## Usage
27
+
28
+
Here's how I use it all the time:
29
+
30
+
```ruby
31
+
options = cli.parse(ARGV) # assuming there's a cli which return options
32
+
cfg = Mulficfg.new
33
+
cfg.load('/etc/my-program.conf', '/usr/local/etc/my-program.conf',
34
+
'~/.my-program/config.yml', './.my-program.yml', ENV, options)
35
+
```
36
+
37
+
That'll load hashes from those places (provided the files exist), merge them
38
+
(in order, so later entries supercede earlier ones), and override them with
39
+
environment variables (in this case orefixed with `MY_PROGRAM_`).
40
+
41
+
It tries to load YAML and JSON, and env files which consist of lines with
42
+
"KEY=value", such as `.env` files.
43
+
44
+
## Development
45
+
46
+
After checking out the repo, run `bin/setup` to install dependencies. Then,
47
+
run `rake test` to run the tests. You can also run `bin/console` for an
48
+
interactive prompt that will allow you to experiment.
49
+
50
+
To install this gem onto your local machine, run `bundle exec rake install`.
51
+
To release a new version, update the version number in `version.rb`, and then
52
+
run `bundle exec rake release`, which will create a git tag for the version,
53
+
push git commits and tags, and push the `.gem` file to
54
+
[rubygems.org](https://rubygems.org).
55
+
56
+
