2
+
3
+
## Our Pledge
4
+
5
+
In the interest of fostering an open and welcoming environment, we as
6
+
contributors and maintainers pledge to making participation in our project and
7
+
our community a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of age, body
8
+
size, disability, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, level of experience,
9
+
nationality, personal appearance, race, religion, or sexual identity and
10
+
orientation.
11
+
12
+
## Our Standards
13
+
14
+
Examples of behavior that contributes to creating a positive environment
15
+
include:
16
+
17
+
* Using welcoming and inclusive language
18
+
* Being respectful of differing viewpoints and experiences
19
+
* Gracefully accepting constructive criticism
20
+
* Focusing on what is best for the community
21
+
* Showing empathy towards other community members
22
+
23
+
Examples of unacceptable behavior by participants include:
24
+
25
+
* The use of sexualized language or imagery and unwelcome sexual attention or
26
+
advances
27
+
* Trolling, insulting/derogatory comments, and personal or political attacks
28
+
* Public or private harassment
29
+
* Publishing others' private information, such as a physical or electronic
30
+
address, without explicit permission
31
+
* Other conduct which could reasonably be considered inappropriate in a
32
+
professional setting
33
+
34
+
## Our Responsibilities
35
+
36
+
Project maintainers are responsible for clarifying the standards of acceptable
37
+
behavior and are expected to take appropriate and fair corrective action in
38
+
response to any instances of unacceptable behavior.
39
+
40
+
Project maintainers have the right and responsibility to remove, edit, or
41
+
reject comments, commits, code, wiki edits, issues, and other contributions
42
+
that are not aligned to this Code of Conduct, or to ban temporarily or
43
+
permanently any contributor for other behaviors that they deem inappropriate,
44
+
threatening, offensive, or harmful.
45
+
46
+
## Scope
47
+
48
+
This Code of Conduct applies both within project spaces and in public spaces
49
+
when an individual is representing the project or its community. Examples of
50
+
representing a project or community include using an official project e-mail
51
+
address, posting via an official social media account, or acting as an appointed
52
+
representative at an online or offline event. Representation of a project may be
53
+
further defined and clarified by project maintainers.
54
+
55
+
## Enforcement
56
+
57
+
Instances of abusive, harassing, or otherwise unacceptable behavior may be
58
+
reported by contacting the project team at kyle.wiest@gmail.com. All
59
+
complaints will be reviewed and investigated and will result in a response that
60
+
is deemed necessary and appropriate to the circumstances. The project team is
61
+
obligated to maintain confidentiality with regard to the reporter of an incident.
62
+
Further details of specific enforcement policies may be posted separately.
63
+
64
+
Project maintainers who do not follow or enforce the Code of Conduct in good
65
+
faith may face temporary or permanent repercussions as determined by other
66
+
members of the project's leadership.
67
+

# Component Based Rails Application (CBRA) Contracts
2
+
3
+
## Introduction
4
+
5
+
Many Rails applications start simply enough. A generator command here, a
6
+
migration there and soon enough, you've got a working application. Some end up
7
+
as a [Majestic Monolith](https://m.signalvnoise.com/the-majestic-monolith/).
8
+
9
+
As some applications grow, and new developers come and go they can drift from
10
+
"Majestic" and become more and more challenging to work in. God objects, tightly
11
+
coupled models and a lack of clear boundaries creep up seemingly overnight and
12
+
now what you thought was a small change can trigger a host of test failures.
13
+
14
+
At this point, a common solution is to reach for microservices. Smaller, domain
15
+
specific applications that are deployed independently sound great! The tradeoffs
16
+
being that you now have a new problem to worry about - the network. What calls
17
+
can fail and where, retry policies and latency are now brought to the forefront.
18
+
Deployment infrastructure, more complicated CI/CD pipelines, complicated local
19
+
environments are all potential pitfalls of a microservice architecture.
20
+
21
+
Another alternative is to break your monolith into modular "components." These
22
+
components are still built and deployed together but offer a more clear
23
+
separation of domain-specific functionality.
24
+
25
+
CBRA Contracts aims to help guide the transition from a less-than-majestic
26
+
monolith to a collection of clearly separated functionality with distinct
27
+
boundaries and ... contracts.
28
+
29
+
## How it Works
30
+
31
+
CBRA Contracts provides a DSL and "convention over configuration" approach to
32
+
define contract interfaces between application components. These contracts serve
33
+
to define a public interface for a component while hiding all implementation
34
+
details.
35
+
36
+
If a developer needs to use a functional component, she needs to look no further
37
+
than the contract to see what methods are available, what arguments need to be
38
+
passed and what return type she can expect.
39
+
40
+
This also allows for fearless refactoring of implementation code _inside_ of the
41
+
component. As long as the contract is fulfilled, any implementation is safe to
42
+
refactor or swap altogether.
43
+
44
+
### Usage
45
+
46
+
In your component Gemfile, include `gem 'cbra_contracts'` or in your `.gemspec`
47
+
include `spec.runtime_dependency 'cbra_contracts'`.
48
+
49
+
### Example
50
+
51
+
Let's define a contract!
52
+
53
+
```ruby
54
+
# A sample `Weather` component of our application
55
+
56
+
# weather/lib/contract.rb
57
+
module Weather
58
+
extend CBRAContracts::DSL
59
+
60
+
define_contract 'Weather', 'Provides weather lookups and predictions' do
61
+
62
+
contract_method :lookup, 'Lookup the current weather of a location' do |m|
63
+
m.param :postal_code, :string, 'Postal code of the weather request'
64
+
m.param :time_of_day, :int, 'The time of day, in seconds'
65
+
m.produces WeatherReport
66
+
end
67
+
68
+
end
69
+
end
70
+
```
71
+
72
+
Our Weather component now has a public interface that provides one method,
73
+
`lookup` and promises to return a `WeatherReport` provided that the caller
74
+
also adheres to the contract and provides arguments for `:postal_code` and
75
+
`:time_of_day`.
76
+
77
+
By convention, the implementation of the lookup should live in the
78
+
`weather/lib/weather/lookup.rb` class.
79
+
80
+
```ruby
81
+
# weather/lib/weather/lookup.rb
82
+
83
+
module Weather
84
+
class Lookup
85
+
def call(postal_code:, time_of_day:)
86
+
## implementation goes here
87
+
88
+
WeatherReport.new(88, 'Sunny')
89
+
end
90
+
end
91
+
92
+
class WeatherReport
93
+
attr_reader :degrees, :description
94
+
95
+
def initialize(degrees, description)
96
+
@degrees = degrees
97
+
@description = description
98
+
end
99
+
end
100
+
end
101
+
```
102
+
103
+
This can be overriden in the contract method definition block by setting
104
+
`m.implementation = MyCustomImplementationClass.new`.
105
+
106
+
## Future Goals
