# cap-deploy-tagger
2
+
3
+
## What does this do?
4
+
5
+
This gem allows you to automatically tag Git commits when you deploy with Capistrano.
6
+
7
+
## Why would you tag on deploy?
8
+
9
+
One reason you would want to tag on deploy is to keep track of what commit is currently
10
+
in production (or in staging or some other stage). You may also want to track this
11
+
if you're using some kind of scaling process to deploy code - this will allow you to
12
+
deploy the same release that other servers are currently using.
13
+
14
+
## Installation
15
+
16
+
Add this line to your application's Gemfile:
17
+
18
+
gem 'cap-deploy-tagger'
19
+
20
+
Since deploy only happens in development, you may want to wrap it in a Bundler group
21
+
so that it's not deployed to your production servers:
22
+
23
+
group :development do
24
+
gem 'cap-deploy-tagger'
25
+
end
26
+
27
+
Now add the gem to your Capistrano `Capfile`:
28
+
29
+
require 'cap-deploy-tagger'
30
+
31
+
## Usage and configuration
32
+
33
+
### Tag name
34
+
35
+
When you include the gem into your Capfile, it will tag each deploy you make to each stage.
36
+
It will assemble the tag name from the stage name like so: `deployed_stage`. For example,
37
+
when deploying to production it will create a tag called `deployed_production`, and when
38
+
deploying to staging it will create a tag called `deployed_staging`.
39
+
40
+
You can change the tag name by setting the Capistrano variable `:deploy_tag`:
41
+
42
+
set :deploy_tag, 'in_the_world'
43
+
44
+
This will create tags like `in_the_world_production`.
45
+
46
+
### Skipping tagging
47
+
48
+
You may want to skip tagging in some instances - to do so, either set the Capistrano variable
49
+
`:skip_deploy_tagging` to `true`, or set the environment variable SKIP_DEPLOY_TAGGING to `'true'`:
50
+
51
+
# From the command line
52
+
SKIP_DEPLOY_TAGGING=true cap production deploy
53
+
54
+
# Inside your deploy.rb
55
+
set :skip_deploy_tagging, true
56
+
57
+
## Contributing
58
+
59
+
1. Fork it
60
+
2. Create your feature branch (`git checkout -b my-new-feature`)
61
+
3. Commit your changes (`git commit -am 'Add some feature'`)
62
+
4. Push to the branch (`git push origin my-new-feature`)
63
+
5. Create new Pull Request
