class="text John-3-16"><span class="woj"><sup class="versenum">16 </sup>“For <sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26126AB" title="See cross-reference AB">AB</a>)'></sup>God so loved <sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26126AC" title="See cross-reference AC">AC</a>)'></sup>the world,<sup class='footnote' value='[<a href="#fen-ESV-26126i" title="See footnote i">i</a>]'>[<a href="#fen-ESV-26126i" title="See footnote i">i</a>]</sup> <sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26126AD" title="See cross-reference AD">AD</a>)'></sup>that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not <sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26126AE" title="See cross-reference AE">AE</a>)'></sup>perish but have eternal life.</span></span> <span id="en-ESV-26127" class="text John-3-17"><span class="woj"><sup class="versenum">17 </sup>For <sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26127AF" title="See cross-reference AF">AF</a>)'></sup>God did not send his Son into the world <sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26127AG" title="See cross-reference AG">AG</a>)'></sup>to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.</span></span> <span id="en-ESV-26128" class="text John-3-18"><span class="woj"><sup class="versenum">18 </sup><sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26128AH" title="See cross-reference AH">AH</a>)'></sup>Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not <sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26128AI" title="See cross-reference AI">AI</a>)'></sup>believed in the name of the only Son of God.</span></span> <span id="en-ESV-26129" class="text John-3-19"><span class="woj"><sup class="versenum">19 </sup><sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26129AJ" title="See cross-reference AJ">AJ</a>)'></sup>And this is the judgment: <sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26129AK" title="See cross-reference AK">AK</a>)'></sup>the light has come into the world, and <sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26129AL" title="See cross-reference AL">AL</a>)'></sup>people loved the darkness rather than the light because <sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26129AM" title="See cross-reference AM">AM</a>)'></sup>their works were evil.</span></span> <span id="en-ESV-26130" class="text John-3-20"><span class="woj"><sup class="versenum">20 </sup><sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26130AN" title="See cross-reference AN">AN</a>)'></sup>For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, <sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26130AO" title="See cross-reference AO">AO</a>)'></sup>lest his works should be exposed.</span></span> <span id="en-ESV-26131" class="text John-3-21"><span class="woj"><sup class="versenum">21 </sup>But whoever <sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26131AP" title="See cross-reference AP">AP</a>)'></sup>does what is true <sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26131AQ" title="See cross-reference AQ">AQ</a>)'></sup>comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”</span></span></p> <h3><span id="en-ESV-26132" class="text John-3-22">John the Baptist Exalts Christ</span></h3><p><span class="text John-3-22"><sup class="versenum">22 </sup>After this Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and he remained there with them and <sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26132AR" title="See cross-reference AR">AR</a>)'></sup>was baptizing.</span> <span id="en-ESV-26133" class="text John-3-23"><sup class="versenum">23 </sup>John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming and being baptized</span> <span id="en-ESV-26134" class="text John-3-24"><sup class="versenum">24 </sup>(for <sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26134AS" title="See cross-reference AS">AS</a>)'></sup>John had not yet been put in prison).</span></p> <p><span id="en-ESV-26135" class="text John-3-25"><sup class="versenum">25 </sup>Now a discussion arose between some of John's disciples and a Jew over <sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26135AT" title="See cross-reference AT">AT</a>)'></sup>purification.</span> <span id="en-ESV-26136" class="text John-3-26"><sup class="versenum">26 </sup>And they came to John and said to him, <sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26136AU" title="See cross-reference AU">AU</a>)'></sup>“Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, <sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26136AV" title="See cross-reference AV">AV</a>)'></sup>to whom you bore witness—look, he is baptizing, and <sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26136AW" title="See cross-reference AW">AW</a>)'></sup>all are going to him.”</span> <span id="en-ESV-26137" class="text John-3-27"><sup class="versenum">27 </sup>John answered, <sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26137AX" title="See cross-reference AX">AX</a>)'></sup>“A person cannot receive even one thing <sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26137AY" title="See cross-reference AY">AY</a>)'></sup>unless it is given him <sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26137AZ" title="See cross-reference AZ">AZ</a>)'></sup>from heaven.</span> <span id="en-ESV-26138" class="text John-3-28"><sup class="versenum">28 </sup>You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, <sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26138BA" title="See cross-reference BA">BA</a>)'></sup>‘I am not the Christ, but <sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26138BB" title="See cross-reference BB">BB</a>)'></sup>I have been sent before him.’</span> <span id="en-ESV-26139" class="text John-3-29"><sup class="versenum">29 </sup><sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26139BC" title="See cross-reference BC">BC</a>)'></sup>The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. <sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26139BD" title="See cross-reference BD">BD</a>)'></sup>The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, <sup class='crossreference' value='(<a href="#cen-ESV-26139BE" title="See cross-reference BE">BE</a>)'></sup>rejoices greatly at the bridegroom's voice.
