+ TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR USE, REPRODUCTION, AND DISTRIBUTION
8
+
9
+ 1. Definitions.
10
+
11
+ "License" shall mean the terms and conditions for use, reproduction,
12
+ and distribution as defined by Sections 1 through 9 of this document.
13
+
14
+ "Licensor" shall mean the copyright owner or entity authorized by
15
+ the copyright owner that is granting the License.
16
+
17
+ "Legal Entity" shall mean the union of the acting entity and all
18
+ other entities that control, are controlled by, or are under common
19
+ control with that entity. For the purposes of this definition,
20
+ "control" means (i) the power, direct or indirect, to cause the
21
+ direction or management of such entity, whether by contract or
22
+ otherwise, or (ii) ownership of fifty percent (50%) or more of the
23
+ outstanding shares, or (iii) beneficial ownership of such entity.
24
+
25
+ "You" (or "Your") shall mean an individual or Legal Entity
26
+ exercising permissions granted by this License.
27
+
28
+ "Source" form shall mean the preferred form for making modifications,
29
+ including but not limited to software source code, documentation
30
+ source, and configuration files.
31
+
32
+ "Object" form shall mean any form resulting from mechanical
33
+ transformation or translation of a Source form, including but
34
+ not limited to compiled object code, generated documentation,
35
+ and conversions to other media types.
36
+
37
+ "Work" shall mean the work of authorship, whether in Source or
38
+ Object form, made available under the License, as indicated by a
39
+ copyright notice that is included in or attached to the work
40
+ (an example is provided in the Appendix below).
41
+
42
+ "Derivative Works" shall mean any work, whether in Source or Object
43
+ form, that is based on (or derived from) the Work and for which the
44
+ editorial revisions, annotations, elaborations, or other modifications
45
+ represent, as a whole, an original work of authorship. For the purposes
46
+ of this License, Derivative Works shall not include works that remain
47
+ separable from, or merely link (or bind by name) to the interfaces of,
48
+ the Work and Derivative Works thereof.
49
+
50
+ "Contribution" shall mean any work of authorship, including
51
+ the original version of the Work and any modifications or additions
52
+ to that Work or Derivative Works thereof, that is intentionally
53
+ submitted to Licensor for inclusion in the Work by the copyright owner
54
+ or by an individual or Legal Entity authorized to submit on behalf of
55
+ the copyright owner. For the purposes of this definition, "submitted"
56
+ means any form of electronic, verbal, or written communication sent
57
+ to the Licensor or its representatives, including but not limited to
58
+ communication on electronic mailing lists, source code control systems,
59
+ and issue tracking systems that are managed by, or on behalf of, the
60
+ Licensor for the purpose of discussing and improving the Work, but
61
+ excluding communication that is conspicuously marked or otherwise
62
+ designated in writing by the copyright owner as "Not a Contribution."
63
+
64
+ "Contributor" shall mean Licensor and any individual or Legal Entity
65
+ on behalf of whom a Contribution has been received by Licensor and
66
+ subsequently incorporated within the Work.
67
+
68
+ 2. Grant of Copyright License. Subject to the terms and conditions of
69
+ this License, each Contributor hereby grants to You a perpetual,
70
+ worldwide, non-exclusive, no-charge, royalty-free, irrevocable
71
+ copyright license to reproduce, prepare Derivative Works of,
72
+ publicly display, publicly perform, sublicense, and distribute the
73
+ Work and such Derivative Works in Source or Object form.
74
+
75
+ 3. Grant of Patent License. Subject to the terms and conditions of
76
+ this License, each Contributor hereby grants to You a perpetual,
77
+ worldwide, non-exclusive, no-charge, royalty-free, irrevocable
78
+ (except as stated in this section) patent license to make, have made,
79
+ use, offer to sell, sell, import, and otherwise transfer the Work,
80
+ where such license applies only to those patent claims licensable
81
+ by such Contributor that are necessarily infringed by their
82
+ Contribution(s) alone or by combination of their Contribution(s)
83
+ with the Work to which such Contribution(s) was submitted. If You
84
+ institute patent litigation against any entity (including a
85
+ cross-claim or counterclaim in a lawsuit) alleging that the Work
86
+ or a Contribution incorporated within the Work constitutes direct
87
+ or contributory patent infringement, then any patent licenses
88
+ granted to You under this License for that Work shall terminate
89
+ as of the date such litigation is filed.
90
+
91
+ 4. Redistribution. You may reproduce and distribute copies of the
92
+ Work or Derivative Works thereof in any medium, with or without
93
+ modifications, and in Source or Object form, provided that You
94
+ meet the following conditions:
95
+
96
+ (a) You must give any other recipients of the Work or
97
+ Derivative Works a copy of this License; and
98
+
99
+ (b) You must cause any modified files to carry prominent notices
100
+ stating that You changed the files; and
101
+
102
+ (c) You must retain, in the Source form of any Derivative Works
103
+ that You distribute, all copyright, patent, trademark, and
104
+ attribution notices from the Source form of the Work,
105
+ excluding those notices that do not pertain to any part of
106
+ the Derivative Works; and
107
+
108
+ (d) If the Work includes a "NOTICE" text file as part of its
109
+ distribution, then any Derivative Works that You distribute must
110
+ include a readable copy of the attribution notices contained
111
+ within such NOTICE file, excluding those notices that do not
112
+ pertain to any part of the Derivative Works, in at least one
113
+ of the following places: within a NOTICE text file distributed
114
+ as part of the Derivative Works; within the Source form or
115
+ documentation, if provided along with the Derivative Works; or,
116
+ within a display generated by the Derivative Works, if and
117
+ wherever such third-party notices normally appear. The contents
118
+ of the NOTICE file are for informational purposes only and
119
+ do not modify the License. You may add Your own attribution
120
+ notices within Derivative Works that You distribute, alongside
121
+ or as an addendum to the NOTICE text from the Work, provided
122
+ that such additional attribution notices cannot be construed
123
+ as modifying the License.
124
+
125
+ You may add Your own copyright statement to Your modifications and
126
+ may provide additional or different license terms and conditions
127
+ for use, reproduction, or distribution of Your modifications, or
128
+ for any such Derivative Works as a whole, provided Your use,
129
+ reproduction, and distribution of the Work otherwise complies with
130
+ the conditions stated in this License.
131
+
132
+ 5. Submission of Contributions. Unless You explicitly state otherwise,
133
+ any Contribution intentionally submitted for inclusion in the Work
134
+ by You to the Licensor shall be under the terms and conditions of
135
+ this License, without any additional terms or conditions.
136
+ Notwithstanding the above, nothing herein shall supersede or modify
137
+ the terms of any separate license agreement you may have executed
138
+ with Licensor regarding such Contributions.
139
+
140
+ 6. Trademarks. This License does not grant permission to use the trade
141
+ names, trademarks, service marks, or product names of the Licensor,
142
+ except as required for reasonable and customary use in describing the
143
+ origin of the Work and reproducing the content of the NOTICE file.
144
+
145
+ 7. Disclaimer of Warranty. Unless required by applicable law or
146
+ agreed to in writing, Licensor provides the Work (and each
147
+ Contributor provides its Contributions) on an "AS IS" BASIS,
148
+ WITHOUT WARRANTIES OR CONDITIONS OF ANY KIND, either express or

152
+ appropriateness of using or redistributing the Work and assume any
153
+ risks associated with Your exercise of permissions under this License.
154
+
155
+ 8. Limitation of Liability. In no event and under no legal theory,
156
+ whether in tort (including negligence), contract, or otherwise,
157
+ unless required by applicable law (such as deliberate and grossly
158
+ negligent acts) or agreed to in writing, shall any Contributor be
159
+ liable to You for damages, including any direct, indirect, special,
160
+ incidental, or consequential damages of any character arising as a
161
+ result of this License or out of the use or inability to use the
162
+ Work (including but not limited to damages for loss of goodwill,
163
+ work stoppage, computer failure or malfunction, or any and all
164
+ other commercial damages or losses), even if such Contributor
165
+ has been advised of the possibility of such damages.
166
+
167
+ 9. Accepting Warranty or Additional Liability. While redistributing
168
+ the Work or Derivative Works thereof, You may choose to offer,
169
+ and charge a fee for, acceptance of support, warranty, indemnity,
170
+ or other liability obligations and/or rights consistent with this
171
+ License. However, in accepting such obligations, You may act only
172
+ on Your own behalf and on Your sole responsibility, not on behalf
173
+ of any other Contributor, and only if You agree to indemnify,
174
+ defend, and hold each Contributor harmless for any liability
175
+ incurred by, or claims asserted against, such Contributor by reason
176
+ of your accepting any such warranty or additional liability.

+ # hfdask
20
+
21
+ Run ordinary Dask programs across Hugging Face Jobs from one YAML cluster definition.
22
+ hfdask ships the current Git working tree, starts a coordinator Job and worker Jobs,
23
+ connects them through an authenticated encrypted mesh, and cleans up the paid Jobs
24
+ when the program finishes.
25
+
26
+ > **Status:** pre-release (`0.1.0`). APIs and configuration may change before the
27
+ > first stable release.
28
+
29
+ ## Why hfdask
30
+
31
+ We like working in the Hugging Face ecosystem and find ourselves using it for more
32
+ and more of our work. Hugging Face Jobs gives us on-demand CPUs and GPUs alongside
33
+ native access to models, datasets, Spaces, and buckets.
34
+
35
+ Much of that work combines CPU-heavy data transformation with GPU-heavy inference.
36
+ We like expressing these pipelines in Dask: ordinary Python task graphs make it easy
37
+ to parallelize transformations, preserve dependencies between stages, and schedule
38
+ each task on suitable hardware. What was missing was a way to run that same Dask
39
+ programming model across Hugging Face Jobs.
40
+
41
+ hfdask connects the two. It turns a YAML cluster definition into a temporary Dask
42
+ cluster on Hugging Face Jobs, runs an ordinary Dask script, and cleans up the Jobs
43
+ when the program finishes. This lets us:
44
+
45
+ - use CPU and GPU Jobs together in one Dask task graph;
46
+ - keep data transformation, inference, and aggregation in one program;
47
+ - use native Hugging Face model, dataset, Space, and bucket mounts;
48
+ - ship a locked project environment and the current Git working tree;
49
+ - connect the cluster over an authenticated, encrypted mesh without exposing a
50
+ public Dask scheduler;
51
+ - recover and clean up paid Jobs when a run fails or is interrupted.
52
+
53
+ ```text

61
+ ```
62
+
63
+ ## CPU-only quickstart
64
+
65
+ Create a Git-backed uv project. Add the libraries used by the Dask program as
66
+ normal project dependencies, then add hfdask to the deployment dependency group
67
+ selected by the cluster YAML.
68
+
69
+ ```sh
70
+ mkdir hfdask-quickstart
71
+ cd hfdask-quickstart
72
+ git init
73
+ uv init --bare --python 3.12
74
+ uv add "dask[dataframe,distributed]>=2025.1,<2027" pandas
75
+ uv add --group deploy hfdask
76
+ curl -fL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Hanno-Labs/hfdask/v0.1.0/examples/cpu.py -o cpu.py
77
+ curl -fL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Hanno-Labs/hfdask/v0.1.0/examples/cpu.yaml -o cluster.yaml
78
+ ```
79
+
80
+ [`examples/cpu.py`](https://github.com/Hanno-Labs/hfdask/blob/v0.1.0/examples/cpu.py) is a normal, unannotated Dask DataFrame
81
+ program. It creates four partitions per live worker, so the Dask scheduler can use
82
+ the full CPU pool. The script imports Dask and pandas, not hfdask.
83
+
84
+ 1. Authenticate the submitting machine with `uv run --group deploy hf auth login`.
85
+ 2. Set your HF namespace in `cluster.yaml`.
86
+ 3. Review the two `cpu-basic` Jobs, the 15-minute timeout, and the public relay
87
+ consent, then run:
88
+
89
+ ```sh
90
+ uv run --group deploy hfdask run --cluster cluster.yaml cpu.py
91
+ ```
92
+
93
+ The coordinator hosts the script and scheduler. Because `coordinator.worker: true`,
94
+ it reserves one CPU core for the scheduler and starts workers on its remaining
95
+ cores. The separate worker Job uses every complete CPU core. Neither the YAML nor
96
+ the DataFrame graph contains Hugging Face-specific task annotations.
97
+
98
+ For heterogeneous CPU → GPU → CPU execution with mounted Hub data and worker-local
99
+ vLLM engines, see the [AG News inference example](https://github.com/Hanno-Labs/hfdask/blob/v0.1.0/examples/README.md#gpu-inference).
100
+
101
+ ## Cluster configuration
102
+
103
+ The CLI reads a strict YAML definition before staging source or submitting Jobs:
104
+
105
+ | Field | Purpose |
106
+ |---|---|
107
+ | `namespace` | HF user or organization that owns the paid Jobs |
108
+ | `coordinator.flavor` | Hardware for the scheduler and script |
109
+ | `coordinator.worker` | Run workers beside the scheduler, reserving one core for it |
110
+ | `workers.flavor`, `workers.count` | Remote worker hardware and machine count |
111
+ | `environment.image` | Bootstrap image containing Python and uv |
112
+ | `environment.groups` | Locked dependency groups installed in every Job |
113
+ | `mounts` | Hub repositories or buckets mounted into every Job |
114
+ | `timeout` | HF Job lifetime such as `15m` or `2h` |
115
+ | `network.public_relays` | Explicit consent to public discovery and relay fallback |
116
+
117
+ Unknown keys and coerced scalar types are rejected. Counts must be YAML integers,
118
+ booleans must be YAML booleans, and `workers.count` must be between 1 and 63.
119
+ Clusters support at most 64 Jobs including the coordinator.
120
+
121
+ Mount sources use HF CLI paths:
122
+
123
+ - `hf://models/namespace/repo`
124
+ - `hf://datasets/namespace/repo`
125
+ - `hf://spaces/namespace/repo`
126
+ - `hf://buckets/namespace/bucket`
127
+
128
+ Repository mounts are read-only and may pin a branch, tag, or commit with
129
+ `revision`. Bucket mounts do not accept revisions; set `read_only: false` explicitly
130
+ for outputs. Keep permissions narrow and use a fresh output prefix for each run.
131
+
132
+ ## Workers and task placement
133
+
134
+ Each machine detects its CPU affinity and cgroup quota at startup. Worker-only
135
+ machines start one process for every complete available core. A coordinator with
136
+ `worker: true` reserves exactly one core for the scheduler and uses the rest; a
137
+ one-core coordinator therefore contributes no worker.
138
+
139
+ Every worker has one Dask thread. Visible NVIDIA GPUs are assigned exclusively to
140
+ the first worker processes, one GPU per process, while remaining processes are
141
+ CPU-only. GPU discovery requires `nvidia-smi`; MIG partitions are not supported.
142
+ Detected worker counts are exchanged before the mesh allocates Dask service ports.
143
+
144
+ Unannotated Dask tasks are eligible for every worker. Use ordinary Dask resources
145
+ for numeric reservations such as `resources={"GPU": 1}`. For categorical placement,
146
+ `hfdask.routing.workers_with` and `submit_on` select workers by detected hardware or
147
+ custom group tags without consuming artificial resource slots.
148
+
149
+ ## Dependencies and bootstrap
150
+
151
+ Declare the libraries imported by your Dask program as normal project dependencies,
152
+ independent of where the program will run:
153
+
154
+ ```sh
155
+ uv add "dask[dataframe,distributed]>=2025.1,<2027" pandas
156
+ ```
157
+
158
+ Add hfdask to a deployment dependency group, then list that group under
159
+ `environment.groups` in the cluster YAML. Dependency groups stay local to the
160
+ project instead of becoming published package extras:
161
+
162
+ ```sh
163
+ uv add --group deploy hfdask
164
+ ```
165
+
166
+ ```yaml
167
+ environment:
168
+ groups: [deploy]
169
+ ```
170
+
171
+ Enable the same group when submitting so the hfdask CLI is available locally:
172
+
173
+ ```sh
174
+ uv run --group deploy hfdask run --cluster cluster.yaml cpu.py
175
+ ```
176
+
177
+ hfdask ships the project's `pyproject.toml` and `uv.lock` to every Job and runs
178
+ `uv sync --locked --no-dev --group deploy`. That installs the base workload
179
+ together with hfdask's remote runner in one locked environment.
180
+
181
+ An isolated `uvx hfdask` invocation cannot replace the dependency group because it
182
+ does not add the remote runner to the submitted project's lockfile.
183
+
184
+ ## Source shipping
185
+
186
+ Run the CLI from a Git project containing `pyproject.toml`, `uv.lock`, and the
187
+ project-relative script. hfdask snapshots the current working tree, including
188
+ eligible untracked files—not just committed `HEAD`.
189
+
190
+ Ignored files and recognized secret paths are excluded, and symlinks are rejected.
191
+ Filename filtering cannot identify every secret, so review the working tree before
192
+ submission. Keep data and model weights in mounts. The source limits are 8 MiB
193
+ compressed, 8 MiB uncompressed, and 2,000 files.
194
+
195
+ The launcher creates or reuses the namespace's private `jobs-artifacts` bucket,
196
+ uploads the archive under a unique prefix, mounts it read-only, and verifies its
197
+ checksum before extraction. The CLI prints the artifact URI. Artifacts remain after
198
+ the run and can incur storage charges until removed.
199
+
200
+ ## Cleanup and recovery
201
+
202
+ The CLI writes public recovery handles to `.hfdask/run-*.json`, or to an unused path
203
+ selected with `--manifest`. It saves the growing manifest after every acknowledged
204
+ submission, waits for the driver, and verifies termination of known Jobs. Failures
205
+ and interrupts attempt cleanup without hiding an unverified result.
206
+
207
+ If the submitting process is lost or cleanup cannot be verified, keep the manifest
208
+ and inspect every recorded Job. With HF credentials available:
209
+
210
+ ```python
211
+ import json
212
+ from pathlib import Path
213
+
214
+ from hfdask.cluster import Cluster
215
+
216
+ manifest = json.loads(Path(".hfdask/run-<id>.json").read_text())
217
+ Cluster.from_manifest(manifest).close()
218
+ ```
219
+
220
+ `Cluster.close()` cancels known Jobs and polls them to a terminal state. The
221
+ manifest contains no private node keys, is not a workload checkpoint, and does not
222
+ resolve an ambiguous submission that returned no handle; reconcile those Jobs by
223
+ their cluster labels before retrying.
224
+
225
+ ## Security and limitations
226
+
227
+ Iroh provides authenticated encrypted QUIC, NAT traversal, and relay transport.
228
+ Dask services bind only to loopback, and each node admits identities from its fixed
229
+ cluster roster. `network.public_relays: true` is required explicitly; discovery and
230
+ relay services can observe connection metadata.
231
+
232
+ Run only trusted workloads and images. Dask tasks execute arbitrary Python and can
233
+ access their mounted data. HF credentials remain on the submitting machine; Jobs
234
+ receive distinct Iroh keys through Job secrets.
235
+
236
+ Job-local disks and scheduler state are ephemeral. Automatic whole-cluster resume
237
+ is not implemented. Long workloads should write independently recoverable shards
238
+ to durable storage. The example output writes are not an atomic checkpoint protocol.
239
+
240
+ ## API documentation
241
+
242
+ From a repository checkout, generate the pdoc reference locally:
243
+
244
+ ```sh
245
+ uv sync --locked --group docs
246
+ mise run docs
247
+ open docs/hfdask.html
248
+ ```
249
+
250
+ The generated `docs/` directory is ignored build output. The tracked
251
+ [`pdoc-templates`](https://github.com/Hanno-Labs/hfdask/tree/v0.1.0/pdoc-templates) directory is source configuration. The reference
252
+ documents the public package and implementation modules but intentionally excludes
253
+ the standalone pre-installation `hfdask.bootstrap` script.
254
+
255
+ Start with `hfdask.jobs` for a single Job, `hfdask.cluster` for multi-Job lifecycle,
256
+ `hfdask.client` for persistent connections, and `hfdask.routing` for placement.
257
+
258
+ ## Development
259
+
260
+ ```sh
261
+ uv sync --locked --group dev
262
+ mise run check-format
263
+ mise run lint
264
+ mise run test
265
+ mise run docs
266
+ mise run build
267
+ ```
268
+
269
+ CI runs formatting, Ruff, ty, the test suite, pdoc generation, and distribution
270
+ builds on pull requests and pushes to `main`. The opt-in encrypted transport test is:
271
+
272
+ ```sh
273
+ HFDASK_TEST_KEYS=1 uv run pytest tests/test_iroh_integration.py
274
+ ```
