TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR USE, REPRODUCTION, AND DISTRIBUTION
7
+
8
+
1. Definitions.
9
+
10
+
"License" shall mean the terms and conditions for use, reproduction,
11
+
and distribution as defined by Sections 1 through 9 of this document.
12
+
13
+
"Licensor" shall mean the copyright owner or entity authorized by
14
+
the copyright owner that is granting the License.
15
+
16
+
"Legal Entity" shall mean the union of the acting entity and all
17
+
other entities that control, are controlled by, or are under common
18
+
control with that entity. For the purposes of this definition,
19
+
"control" means (i) the power, direct or indirect, to cause the
20
+
direction or management of such entity, whether by contract or
21
+
otherwise, or (ii) ownership of fifty percent (50%) or more of the
22
+
outstanding shares, or (iii) beneficial ownership of such entity.
23
+
24
+
"You" (or "Your") shall mean an individual or Legal Entity
25
+
exercising permissions granted by this License.
26
+
27
+
"Source" form shall mean the preferred form for making modifications,
28
+
including but not limited to software source code, documentation
29
+
source, and configuration files.
30
+
31
+
"Object" form shall mean any form resulting from mechanical
32
+
transformation or translation of a Source form, including but
33
+
not limited to compiled object code, generated documentation,
34
+
and conversions to other media types.
35
+
36
+
"Work" shall mean the work of authorship, whether in Source or
37
+
Object form, made available under the License, as indicated by a
38
+
copyright notice that is included in or attached to the work
39
+
(an example is provided in the Appendix below).
40
+
41
+
"Derivative Works" shall mean any work, whether in Source or Object
42
+
form, that is based on (or derived from) the Work and for which the
43
+
editorial revisions, annotations, elaborations, or other modifications
44
+
represent, as a whole, an original work of authorship. For the purposes
45
+
of this License, Derivative Works shall not include works that remain
46
+
separable from, or merely link (or bind by name) to the interfaces of,
47
+
the Work and Derivative Works thereof.
48
+
49
+
"Contribution" shall mean any work of authorship, including
50
+
the original version of the Work and any modifications or additions
51
+
to that Work or Derivative Works thereof, that is intentionally
52
+
submitted to Licensor for inclusion in the Work by the copyright owner
53
+
or by an individual or Legal Entity authorized to submit on behalf of
54
+
the copyright owner. For the purposes of this definition, "submitted"
55
+
means any form of electronic, verbal, or written communication sent
56
+
to the Licensor or its representatives, including but not limited to
57
+
communication on electronic mailing lists, source code control systems,
58
+
and issue tracking systems that are managed by, or on behalf of, the
59
+
Licensor for the purpose of discussing and improving the Work, but
60
+
excluding communication that is conspicuously marked or otherwise
61
+
designated in writing by the copyright owner as "Not a Contribution."
62
+
63
+
"Contributor" shall mean Licensor and any individual or Legal Entity
64
+
on behalf of whom a Contribution has been received by Licensor and
65
+
subsequently incorporated within the Work.
66
+
67
+
2. Grant of Copyright License. Subject to the terms and conditions of
68
+
this License, each Contributor hereby grants to You a perpetual,
69
+
worldwide, non-exclusive, no-charge, royalty-free, irrevocable
70
+
copyright license to reproduce, prepare Derivative Works of,
71
+
publicly display, publicly perform, sublicense, and distribute the
72
+
Work and such Derivative Works in Source or Object form.
73
+
74
+
3. Grant of Patent License. Subject to the terms and conditions of
75
+
this License, each Contributor hereby grants to You a perpetual,
76
+
worldwide, non-exclusive, no-charge, royalty-free, irrevocable
77
+
(except as stated in this section) patent license to make, have made,
78
+
use, offer to sell, sell, import, and otherwise transfer the Work,
79
+
where such license applies only to those patent claims licensable
80
+
by such Contributor that are necessarily infringed by their
81
+
Contribution(s) alone or by combination of their Contribution(s)
82
+
with the Work to which such Contribution(s) was submitted. If You
83
+
institute patent litigation against any entity (including a
84
+
cross-claim or counterclaim in a lawsuit) alleging that the Work
85
+
or a Contribution incorporated within the Work constitutes direct
86
+
or contributory patent infringement, then any patent licenses
87
+
granted to You under this License for that Work shall terminate
88
+
as of the date such litigation is filed.
89
+
90
+
4. Redistribution. You may reproduce and distribute copies of the
91
+
Work or Derivative Works thereof in any medium, with or without
92
+
modifications, and in Source or Object form, provided that You
93
+
meet the following conditions:
94
+
95
+
(a) You must give any other recipients of the Work or
96
+
Derivative Works a copy of this License; and
97
+
98
+
(b) You must cause any modified files to carry prominent notices
99
+
stating that You changed the files; and
100
+
101
+
(c) You must retain, in the Source form of any Derivative Works
102
+
that You distribute, all copyright, patent, trademark, and
103
+
attribution notices from the Source form of the Work,
104
+
excluding those notices that do not pertain to any part of
105
+
the Derivative Works; and
106
+
107
+
(d) If the Work includes a "NOTICE" text file as part of its
108
+
distribution, then any Derivative Works that You distribute must
109
+
include a readable copy of the attribution notices contained
110
+
within such NOTICE file, excluding those notices that do not
111
+
pertain to any part of the Derivative Works, in at least one
112
+
of the following places: within a NOTICE text file distributed
113
+
as part of the Derivative Works; within the Source form or
114
+
documentation, if provided along with the Derivative Works; or,
115
+
within a display generated by the Derivative Works, if and
116
+
wherever such third-party notices normally appear. The contents
117
+
of the NOTICE file are for informational purposes only and
118
+
do not modify the License. You may add Your own attribution
119
+
notices within Derivative Works that You distribute, alongside
120
+
or as an addendum to the NOTICE text from the Work, provided
121
+
that such additional attribution notices cannot be construed
122
+
as modifying the License.
123
+
124
+
You may add Your own copyright statement to Your modifications and
125
+
may provide additional or different license terms and conditions
126
+
for use, reproduction, or distribution of Your modifications, or
127
+
for any such Derivative Works as a whole, provided Your use,
128
+
reproduction, and distribution of the Work otherwise complies with
129
+
the conditions stated in this License.
130
+
131
+
5. Submission of Contributions. Unless You explicitly state otherwise,
132
+
any Contribution intentionally submitted for inclusion in the Work
133
+
by You to the Licensor shall be under the terms and conditions of
134
+
this License, without any additional terms or conditions.
135
+
Notwithstanding the above, nothing herein shall supersede or modify
136
+
the terms of any separate license agreement you may have executed
137
+
with Licensor regarding such Contributions.
138
+
139
+
6. Trademarks. This License does not grant permission to use the trade
140
+
names, trademarks, service marks, or product names of the Licensor,
141
+
except as required for reasonable and customary use in describing the
142
+
origin of the Work and reproducing the content of the NOTICE file.
143
+
144
+
7. Disclaimer of Warranty. Unless required by applicable law or
145
+
agreed to in writing, Licensor provides the Work (and each
146
+
Contributor provides its Contributions) on an "AS IS" BASIS,
147
+
WITHOUT WARRANTIES OR CONDITIONS OF ANY KIND, either express or
148
+
implied, including, without limitation, any warranties or conditions
149
+
of TITLE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, MERCHANTABILITY, or FITNESS FOR A
150
+
PARTICULAR PURPOSE. You are solely responsible for determining the
151
+
appropriateness of using or redistributing the Work and assume any
152
+
risks associated with Your exercise of permissions under this License.
153
+
154
+
8. Limitation of Liability. In no event and under no legal theory,
155
+
whether in tort (including negligence), contract, or otherwise,
156
+
unless required by applicable law (such as deliberate and grossly
157
+
negligent acts) or agreed to in writing, shall any Contributor be
158
+
liable to You for damages, including any direct, indirect, special,
159
+
incidental, or consequential damages of any character arising as a
160
+
result of this License or out of the use or inability to use the
161
+
Work (including but not limited to damages for loss of goodwill,
162
+
work stoppage, computer failure or malfunction, or any and all
163
+
other commercial damages or losses), even if such Contributor
164
+
has been advised of the possibility of such damages.
165
+
166
+
9. Accepting Warranty or Additional Liability. While redistributing
167
+
the Work or Derivative Works thereof, You may choose to offer,
168
+
and charge a fee for, acceptance of support, warranty, indemnity,
169
+
or other liability obligations and/or rights consistent with this
170
+
License. However, in accepting such obligations, You may act only
171
+
on Your own behalf and on Your sole responsibility, not on behalf
172
+
of any other Contributor, and only if You agree to indemnify,
173
+
defend, and hold each Contributor harmless for any liability
174
+
incurred by, or claims asserted against, such Contributor by reason
175
+
of your accepting any such warranty or additional liability.
176

APPENDIX: How to apply the Apache License to your work.

181

To apply the Apache License to your work, attach the following
182

boilerplate notice, with the fields enclosed by brackets "[]"
183
+
replaced with your own identifying information. (Don't include
184
+
the brackets!) The text should be enclosed in the appropriate
185
+
comment syntax for the file format. We also recommend that a
186
+
file or class name and description of purpose be included on the
187
+
same "printed page" as the copyright notice for easier
188
+
identification within third-party archives.

# asexec - AsExecuted
25
+
26
+
**Pre-registered trials for AI executions.** A local-first, pseudonymous, offline-verifiable
27
+
cryptographic primitive: a practitioner commits to running a test *before* the results are
28
+
known, then publishes tamper-evident, independently-verifiable receipts of what actually
29
+
happened, so that silence after public commitment becomes visible evidence of
30
+
non-disclosure.
31
+
32
+
It is the "as executed" counterpart to pre-registration ("as predicted"), borrowing the
33
+
commit-then-reveal mechanism from clinical-trial pre-registration and applying it to the
34
+
selective-disclosure problem in AI safety.
35
+
36
+
`asexec` is a primitive, not a platform. It offers a signing/verification library and a thin CLI.
37
+
There is no hosted service, no CA, no leaderboard, etc, in the core product. Publish the files
38
+
wherever you like according to how you wish to disclose.
39
+
40

41

42
+
## What does `asexec` prove?
43
+
44
+
What a particular execution cycle's manifest proves is up to the practitioner (who can
45
+
choose what to disclose) and the verifier (who can choose what to check). Proof comes
46
+
in the form of `asexec verify` providing a code regarding the checks applied.
47
+
48
+
**`asexec` can prove:**
49
+
- A manifest (pre-registration or post-registration) was not altered after signing.
50
+
- A post-registration references a specific prior pre-registration, and a sequence wasn't
51
+
silently truncated/reordered (a `prev_hash` chain). *(Partially enforced in 0.3.x — see
52
+
[Known issues](#known-issues-03x-alpha).)*
53
+
- A declared disclosure deadline (`due`) did not expire prior to post-registration (rendered
54
+
as an explicit state `fulfilled`/`open`/`elapsed-no-receipt`/`notarization-only`). *(Not
55
+
yet enforced in 0.3.x — see [Known issues](#known-issues-03x-alpha).)*
56
+
- A manifest was created no earlier than a public moment (floor "freshness" check, offered by
57
+
`drand`).

- A manifest was created no later than time T (ceiling "witness" check, offered by `Roughtime`;
59
+
a signature-witness, not proof-of-work).
60
+
61
+
**`asexec` does not prove**:
62
+
- Provenance. Content hashes prove a transcript wasn't altered; they do not prove it is the
63
+
output of the named harness+model (asserted by the signer, not re-executed).
64
+
- Completeness. It renders only the manifests you give it; it cannot prove a lab pre-registered
65
+
every eval it should have (selective pre-registration). However, just like practitioners are not
66
+
forced to `asexec prereg` all their testing, verifiers are not forced to trust results that were
67
+
telegraphed less than they could have been. It is a signal of good faith to pre-register as much
68
+
as you can!
69
+
- Qualities of the science of evals, including eval quality, elicitation rigor, sandbagging, etc.
70
+
`asexec` aims to make the process of AI testing auditable, but does not make claims about the
71
+
science itself.
72
+
- Anti-forgery of verify codes. The code is a summary of a computation, not a certificate. It is
73
+
meaningful to verifiers only when produced from the registration files. In other words, don't
74
+
blindly trust a verify code handed to you; see if you can reproduce it!

### The verify code (what step 4 produces)
112
+
113
+
`verify` runs the tests you name and prints one canonical code, e.g.:
114
+
115
+
```
116
+
asexec-verify/1 BDR=PASS chain=PASS content=PASS keyconsist=PASS
117
+
```
118
+
119
+
Grammar (`asexec-verify/1` versions the code format): the literal prefix, then one
120
+
`name=RESULT` token per requested test (`RESULT ∈ {PASS, FAIL}`), sorted alphabetically,
121
+
single-space delimited. The same result set is byte-identical everywhere.
122
+
123
+
- You declare your appetite. `--tests` is required and must include `BDR` (bedrock - the
124
+
mandatory minimum: signature + keyid). Everything else is opt-in: `content` (subject
125
+
digests vs. `--artifacts`), `chain` (`prev_hash` integrity), `keyconsist` (postregs share
126
+
the prereg's key), `floor` (drand freshness), `ceiling` (Roughtime witness).
127
+
- Named, not scored, so it's forward-compatible. Because the code names which tests
128
+
ran, adding a test in a later version can never change the meaning of an older code. A code
129
+
means exactly one thing, permanently.
130
+
- A requested test that applies nowhere is `FAIL`, never a silent omission (e.g.
131
+
`--tests BDR,ceiling` on manifests with no ceiling -> `ceiling=FAIL`).
132
+
- The code is not a certificate. Real verification comes from the verifier running the tool
133
+
against the files and get the code.
134
+
135
+
## Identity (optional domain control check, no CA)
136
+
137
+
```bash
138
+
# A domain owner asserts which keys speak for it:
139
+
asexec identity emit --key lab.key --domain lab.example --out asexec.json
140
+
# -> publish at https://lab.example/.well-known/asexec.json
141
+
142
+
# Anyone checks the binding for a match (point-in-time; a domain can rotate keys):
143
+
asexec identity match --domain lab.example --key lab.key
144
+
# -> GET https://lab.example/.well-known/asexec.json
145
+
# -> returns bound==True iff specified key exists there.
146
+
```
147
+
148
+
## Network requirements
149
+
150
+
Most `asexec` functionality is fully offline, which serves to drastically reduce the trust
151
+
surface. This includes all `asexec verify` operations, which are 100% offline by design;
152
+
everything needed to perform a verification is baked-in to the prereg/postreg manifests.
153
+
154
+
There are a few opt-in registration paths that use a network connection:
155
+
156
+
- `prereg/postreg --floor`: Fetches a distributed randomness beacon round from `api.drand.sh`
157
+
(or a fallback) at sign-time.
158
+
- `prereg/postreg --ceiling`: Makes a UDP socket call (with server-list fallbacks) to a
159
+
Roughtime server at sign-time.
160
+
161
+
The `asexec identity` check loop is also network-dependent, as it is explicitly a domain-
162
+
ownership check. It exists outside registration verification as an opt-in helper.
163
+
164
+
## Manifest at a glance
165
+
166
+
Bespoke signed JSON, signed over a DSSE-style PAE input (borrows in-toto field names, not the
167
+
tooling). The bedrock (mandatory) set is deliberately small - the fields whose absence
168
+
would break verifiability of commitment -> fulfillment/gap:
169
+
170
+
- semantic: `target` (what was committed to - plain text or structured JSON). This is the
171
+
only mandatory claim.
172
+
- structural: the format frame - `schema_version`, `predicateType`, `phase`
173
+
(`prereg` | `postreg`).
174
+
175
+
Everything else is individually optional: `due` (the disclosure deadline — a commitment
176
+
without one simply stays `open`), `declaration` (plain-language or structured commitment
177
+
text), `subject` + `hash_alg` (conditionally paired - `hash_alg` is required iff a
178
+
`subject` is present; a pre-registration may commit to a target before any harness exists to
179
+
hash), `anchor.floor` (drand, opt-in via `--floor`), `identity`, `provenance` +
180
+
`repro_recipe`, free-form `notes`. Specificity is a trust gradient the reader prices.
181
+
182
+
The ceiling witness (Roughtime) lives at the envelope level, beside `payload` and
183
+
`signature` - not inside the signed body, because its nonce is the body's own hash
184
+
(`ref(payload)`), which can't be embedded in the thing it hashes. It is self-authenticated by
185
+
the witness signature and binds to the manifest via `nonce == ref(payload)`. This is a purposeful
186
+
asymmetry between floor and ceiling, because the proof of floor requires a piece of information
187
+
to be embedded in the manifest, while the ceiling proof requires the payload to be referenced
188
+
by an external witness.

## Status
212

213

Currently: **0.3.x - alpha.** Realigns the vocabulary and hardens the types (breaking, no back-compat):
214
+
`prereg`/`postreg` commands + phases, a free-form `target` (the only mandatory claim), an
215
+
optional `due` deadline + `declaration`, opt-in drand `--floor`, the `BDR` bedrock code
216
+
token, and Pydantic-typed manifest construction. Builds on 0.2.0's schema rebalance + typed

including later items (per-key public index, re-execution/determinism mode) and what is
220

explicitly not scheduled (hosted transparency log, identity binding/CA).

## Known issues (0.3.x alpha)
237
+
238
+
The following were confirmed against 0.3.11 and are scheduled for the 0.3.14 soundness patch
239
+
(format-level fixes in 0.4.0). See [`ROADMAP.md`](./ROADMAP.md). Until then, treat
240
+
`asexec verify` output with these caveats:
241
+
242
+
**Commitment state and chain**
243
+
- A post-registration signed by *any* key - or with an *invalid* signature - causes its
244
+
pre-registration to render `fulfilled`. Always request `keyconsist` and require `BDR=PASS`
245
+
before trusting a `fulfilled` state.
246
+
- `chain` does not reject a forked `prev_hash` chain (two receipts pointing at the same
247
+
predecessor), and dropping the *last* receipt(s) of a chain is undetectable.
248
+
- Timeliness is not checked: a post-registration created after `due` still renders
249
+
`fulfilled`.
250
+
- A `due` without a timezone is interpreted in the verifier's local timezone, and an
251
+
unparseable `due` silently renders `open`.
252
+
253
+
**Input handling**
254
+
- Duplicate JSON keys in a manifest are accepted (last value wins), so a file can display a
255
+
different value than the one that was verified.
256
+
- `BDR` checks the signature only; any signed JSON object passes, whether or not it is a
257
+
well-formed asexec manifest.
258
+
- Malformed input (e.g. invalid JSON) crashes `verify` instead of producing `FAIL`.
259
+
- `content` resolves subject names containing `../` or absolute paths outside `--artifacts`.
260
+
- Directory hashing (v1) is ambiguous on POSIX: a filename containing a newline can make two
261
+
different trees hash identically. Symlinks are skipped silently.
262
+
263
+
**Signing-side**
264
+
- `keygen --out` overwrites an existing key file without warning.
265
+
- If a `--floor`/`--ceiling` fetch fails, the manifest is still signed (with a warning) without
266
+
the requested anchor.
267
+
- A mistyped `--fulfills` path is stored verbatim as the reference instead of erroring.

+
