- I think it depends on where you go and what you study, but yes, I think they do teach you to think critically, especially in humanities courses and seminars. Maybe it's just because I went to a small, private liberal arts college rather than a huge school, but critical thinking was definitely a part of my education.

- One of the biggest benefits of college is being exposed to new ideas, things you may not have even known existed, and also be forced to confront ideas and people that don't necessarily agree with your world view. I'm not sure that learning everything online would fulfill that role; it seems that online, people tend to stick to areas that agree with their pre-existing ideas (c.f. Reddit).

- Is there anything wrong with just deleting them? I get a warning about their being deleted from iCloud, but I don't really care because these duplicates tend to mess with syncing on my iPhone anyway. (They're tracks I downloaded from iTMS as much as 8 years ago, and in some cases I've changed the ID3 tags which seems to confuse iTunes to no end. Or maybe it's because they're the old protected AAC files, I dunno.)

- That's fine if it's your style (although personally, I think it's much better and less awkward to establish *before* the date whether it is, in fact, a date or not—which doesn't mean you have to say, "Hey, let's go on a date," but just make it clear that it's not simply a friendly outing). *But* what everyone is saying, and I concur, is that *she* may not have thought of it as a date, so when you see her, you should probably just be casual about it: "Hey, it's too bad you didn't make it out last night" or something like that.

- Nope. The chain of succession only goes through the Vice-President, the Speaker of the House, the President *pro tempore* of the Senate (which is basically the Vice-President of the Senate, as the Vice-President is the President of the Senate), and then the Cabinet members. Anything after that is undefined (although it's highly unlikely that all of those people would be killed at the same time).

- Exactly. You can make a "tabs for indentation, spaces for alignment" rule, but some dingback invariably screws it up (uses tabs for both or something like that), which inevitably makes the alignment/indentation wrong for *everyone but him*. (This is especially true on open source projects, where it's hard to tell Random J. Contributor to uses "tabs for indentation, spaces for alignment"). Using spaces for everything is just easier, and it's not really a that big of a deal if indents aren't in your *preferred* size. (Prefer 8-space tabs to 4-space tabs? Too bad, you can live with 4-space tabs?)

Second semester, the photo editor is talking to me and uses the name "hal-lee". 328
- Like many things in life, it depends—mostly on your own personal goals and principles.
329
-
330
- I'll speak anecdotally for a second. One of my hobbies is photography. Photography is an expensive hobby (it *can* be done cheaply, but if you really get into it, it gets pretty pricey). But I enjoy it, and it adds a lot to my life. I also like playing video games, which, again, is a hobby that has the potential to suck up a lot of money.
331
-
332
- Now, my job. Most of the time, it's pretty boring, not challenging, not that fulfilling, and not the most exciting thing I could be doing. *But* I also like the people I work with, the pay is great, and I rarely work more than 45 hours a week.
333
-
334
- The last two points are important: I wouldn't say I'm doing what I *love*, but it's not torture, *and* it affords me both the time and money to pursue my (somewhat expensive) interests outside of work.
335
-
336
- I could get a job making more money…but then I might have to work more hours (sapping up time to do what I *really* want to do), or perhaps work for people I really don't like, or some other negative.
337
-
338
- Conversely, I could maybe swap money for doing something I love…but living paycheck to paycheck kind of sucks, too.
339
-
340
- Ideally, you'll find something you both love *and* can make a lot of money from, but that's uncommon and something to be cherished; barring that, I think it's good to find something you *like* (or at least tolerate), that pays well enough and affords you enough time to do the things you *love*.
341
-
342
- ---
343
-
344
- As an aside, I think it's great to have hobbies separate from your career, that are to be nothing but hobbies. As an example, I used to love writing. I wrote all the time, but mostly for myself (I occasionally shared pieces with other people and I had a blog, but I wasn't serious about disseminating my work). At one point, I got tired of my career and thought maybe I should pursue writing…and then writing became not fun, because I was writing to build a portfolio and get attention—now it was something I felt I *had* to do, rather than something I *wanted* to do. Once I dropped that pursue, writing suddenly became enjoyable again.

- I think Noam Chomsky put it best:
401

402
- "When Israel, in the occupied territories now, claim that they have to defend themselves, they are defending themselves in the sense that any military occupier has to defend itself against the population that they’re crushing."

- Neither. It's not uncommon, though, for the promotional material and even the speaker lineup for programming conventions to be aimed at heterosexual white males. I don't think that the organizers are actually racist or sexist or homophobic; rather, I think they're in a field were most people *are* straight white males, and fail to realize that not everyone is like them.
415

416
- [This article](http://devblog.avdi.org/2012/11/19/on-britruby/) has a provocative analysis. The key point (and obviously I agree with the blogger) is this:
417
-
418
- > I fully believe them when they say that they set out to create a diverse conference. However, I think some implicit bias crept into their selection process.
419
- >
420
- > …
421
- >
422
- > I’m not accusing the BritRuby organizers of being racist, sexist, or misogynistic. And I don’t think anyone else involved in this conversation is accusing them of those things either, despite misguided claims to the contrary. But I don’t think it’s farfetched to suggest that in their process for coming up with names to invite, their brain VMs might have been over-optimized for the common case: white dudes.

- I agree. I'm really difficult to shop for, I admit, because typical gifts are pretty much right out:
447
-
448
- * I have a tiny apartment in New York, so anything that merely takes up space but doesn't provide any utility is right out, because I don't have room for it.
449
- * I'm picky about clothes, and I'm a small guy so you're not going to find anything in my size unless you shop at the stores I already shop at and buy from.
450
- * My hobbies are either expensive (photography, video gaming to an extent) or require no materials (writing). Oh, and I already have at least a dozen unused journals lying around, so stop buying me those! They were a great idea at one time but I don't need anymore!
451
-
452

651
-
652
- Let's say there's a really simple tax structure in which $50,000 and less is taxed at 20%, and greater than $50,000 at 35%. A person making $30,000 would pay $6000 in taxes. A person making $100,00 would pay 20% on the first $50,000 plus 35% on the next $50,000, for a total of $27,500 in taxes—*not* $35,000.

I'm not sure that learning everything online would fulfill that role; it seems that online, people tend to stick to areas that agree with their pre-existing ideas (c.f. Reddit).

- I worked as the opinions editor of my college newspaper. The other editor was a girl named Hallie. I spent an entire semester pronouncing it "hey-lee". Second semester, the photo editor is talking to me and uses the name "hal-lee". 875
- Like many things in life, it depends—mostly on your own personal goals and principles.
876
-
877
- I'll speak anecdotally for a second. One of my hobbies is photography. Photography is an expensive hobby (it *can* be done cheaply, but if you really get into it, it gets pretty pricey). But I enjoy it, and it adds a lot to my life. I also like playing video games, which, again, is a hobby that has the potential to suck up a lot of money.
878
-
879
- Now, my job. Most of the time, it's pretty boring, not challenging, not that fulfilling, and not the most exciting thing I could be doing. *But* I also like the people I work with, the pay is great, and I rarely work more than 45 hours a week.
880
-
881
- The last two points are important: I wouldn't say I'm doing what I *love*, but it's not torture, *and* it affords me both the time and money to pursue my (somewhat expensive) interests outside of work.
882
-
883
- I could get a job making more money…but then I might have to work more hours (sapping up time to do what I *really* want to do), or perhaps work for people I really don't like, or some other negative.
884
-
885
- Conversely, I could maybe swap money for doing something I love…but living paycheck to paycheck kind of sucks, too.
886
-
887
- Ideally, you'll find something you both love *and* can make a lot of money from, but that's uncommon and something to be cherished; barring that, I think it's good to find something you *like* (or at least tolerate), that pays well enough and affords you enough time to do the things you *love*.
888
-
889
- ---
890
-
891

960

961
- * I have a tiny apartment in New York, so anything that merely takes up space but doesn't provide any utility is right out, because I don't have room for it.
962
- * I'm picky about clothes, and I'm a small guy so you're not going to find anything in my size unless you shop at the stores I already shop at and buy from.
963
- * My hobbies are either expensive (photography, video gaming to an extent) or require no materials (writing). Oh, and I already have at least a dozen unused journals lying around, so stop buying me those! They were a great idea at one time but I don't need anymore!

1097
- Let's say there's a really simple tax structure in which $50,000 and less is taxed at 20%, and greater than $50,000 at 35%. A person making $30,000 would pay $6000 in taxes. A person making $100,00 would pay 20% on the first $50,000 plus 35% on the next $50,000, for a total of $27,500 in taxes—*not* $35,000.
