# Terror
2
+
3
+
Terror is a terrible solution to the non-problem of creating custom error
4
+
classes in Ruby. Terror provides a DSL to define custom error classes with
5
+
support for custom messages, parent classes, and custom behavior. If that still
6
+
seems like too much work, Terror will automagically create error classes for
7
+
you at runtime if the class name ends with "Error".
8
+
9
+
Terror was written years ago before I knew how terrible of an idea it was. I'm
10
+
only updating it now because the older version was even more awful. Don't be
11
+
lazy. Don't write code like this.
12
+
13
+
## Installation
14
+
15
+
Add this line to your application's Gemfile:
16
+
17
+
```ruby
18
+
gem "terror"
19
+
```
20
+
21
+
And then execute:
22
+
23
+
$ bundle
24
+
25
+
Or install it yourself as:
26
+
27
+
$ gem install terror
28
+
29
+
## Usage
30
+
31
+
```ruby
32
+
require "terror"
33
+
class MyClass
34
+
extend Terror
35
+
36
+
# Error base class can be specified in the keyword argument `from`.
37
+
errors from: RuntimeError do
38
+
# Errors can use the `message` keyword to set a custom error message.
39
+
MyError message: "just another error"
40
+
41
+
# Override the top-level base class for this error.
42
+
SpecialError from: StandardError
43
+
end
44
+
45
+
def raise_error
46
+
# This error does not exist before it is raised here.
47
+
raise TooLazyToDefineThisError, "error gets defined at runtime"
48
+
end
49
+
end
50
+
```
51
+
52
+
## Development
53
+
54
+
After checking out the repo, run `bin/setup` to install dependencies. Then, run `rake test` to run the tests. You can also run `bin/console` for an interactive prompt that will allow you to experiment.
55
+
56
+
To install this gem onto your local machine, run `bundle exec rake install`. To release a new version, update the version number in `version.rb`, and then run `bundle exec rake release`, which will create a git tag for the version, push git commits and tags, and push the `.gem` file to [rubygems.org](https://rubygems.org).
