========
3
3
4

I worked on several Rails projects and there were many cases when it felt overkill to use a framework like ``Angular`` or ``Ember``, because javascript was only needed in some parts of the application.
5
+
But by not using these frameworks I had to think of a way to *structure* the code by myself.
6
+
I came up with the conclusion to organize the javascript code like the ruby code is organized, that means: __Split up in controllers, which are split up in actions.__
7
+
8
+
## How it works
9
+
* In ``rails-js`` we are able to define ``controllers``, as well as ``helpers``.
10
+
* Controllers have ``actions`` which are executed when the matching rails action is executed.
11
+
* Helpers should be clear. Pretty much like the rails helpers. There are helper per controller and global helpers.
12
+
* The gem also provides a ``view helper`` to use in your layouts, which passes the routing information to ``rails-js``.
13
+
14
+
#### You start by creating an app.
15
+
16
+
```js
17
+
//= rails
18
+
19
+
/*
20
+
* app/assets/javascripts/application.js
21
+
*/
22
+
23
+
Rails.app({
24
+
// Define global helpers here
25
+
helper: function() {
26
+
}
27
+
},
28
+
// Put in initial data
29
+
{
30
+
foo: 'bar'
31
+
},
32
+
// A function that is executed before every action
33
+
function() {
34
+
console.log('beforeAll() executed');
35
+
});
36
+
37
+
```
38
+
#### Create controllers accordingly.
39
+
40
+
```js
41
+
42
+
/*
43
+
* app/assets/javascripts/controllers/users.js
44
+
*/
45
+
46
+
Rails.controller('users', {
47
+
// actions here
48
+
new: function(h) {
49
+
// execute helper
50
+
h.awesomeHelper();
51
+
},
52
+
53
+
index: function(h) {
54
+
// Do the same as in new()
55
+
this.index(h);
56
+
}
57
+
},
58
+
{
59
+
// helpers here
60
+
function awesomeHelper() {
61
+
}
62
+
});
63
+
64
+
```
65
+
66
+
67
+
#### Use code from other controllers.
68
+
```js
69
+
70
+
/*
71
+
* app/assets/javascripts/controllers/admin/users.js
72
+
*/
73
+
74
+
Rails.controller('admin/users', {
75
+
new: function(h) {
76
+
// Execute action of foreign controller
77
+
R.action('users#new');
78
+
},
79
+
80
+
index: function(h) {
81
+
// Execute foreign helper with arguments
82
+
R.helper('users', 'awesomeHelper', 1, 2, 3);
83
+
84
+
// Execute global helper with arguments
85
+
R.global('helper', 1, 2, 3);
86
+
}
87
+
},{});
88
+
89
+
```
90
+
91
+
92
+
#### Global variables without the mess.
93
+
```js
94
+
/*
95
+
* Use R singleton everywhere
96
+
*/
97
+
98
+
// Setting
99
+
R('answer', 42);
100
+
// Multiple levels
101
+
R('a.global.variable', 'foo');
102
+
103
+
// Getting
104
+
console.log(R('a.global.variable'));
105
+
```
106
+
107
+
108
+
#### Define hooks for namespaces.
109
+
```js
110
+
/*
111
+
* app/assets/javascripts/namespaces/admin.js
112
+
*/
113
+
114
+
Rails.namespace('admin', function() {
115
+
// Will be executed on all admin routes (e.g. admin/users#new)
116
+
console.log('Hello Mr. Admin');
117
+
});
118
+
```
119
+
120
+
#### For more info...
121

Install it as any other gem by putting this to your ``Gemfile``:
127
+
```ruby
128
+
gem 'rails-js'
129
+
```
130
+
In your layouts, put this line into the ``head``:
131
+
```erb
132
+
<%= rails_js %>
133
+
```
134
+
Also make sure to include ``rails`` in your ``application.js``.
