5
+
In the interest of fostering an open and welcoming environment, we as
6
+
contributors and maintainers pledge to making participation in our project and
7
+
our community a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of age, body
8
+
size, disability, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, level of experience,
9
+
nationality, personal appearance, race, religion, or sexual identity and
10
+
orientation.
11
+
12
+
## Our Standards
13
+
14
+
Examples of behavior that contributes to creating a positive environment
15
+
include:
16
+
17
+
* Using welcoming and inclusive language
18
+
* Being respectful of differing viewpoints and experiences
19
+
* Gracefully accepting constructive criticism
20
+
* Focusing on what is best for the community
21
+
* Showing empathy towards other community members
22
+
23
+
Examples of unacceptable behavior by participants include:
24
+
25
+
* The use of sexualized language or imagery and unwelcome sexual attention or
26
+
advances
27
+
* Trolling, insulting/derogatory comments, and personal or political attacks
28
+
* Public or private harassment
29
+
* Publishing others' private information, such as a physical or electronic
30
+
address, without explicit permission
31
+
* Other conduct which could reasonably be considered inappropriate in a
32
+
professional setting
33
+
34
+
## Our Responsibilities
35
+
36
+
Project maintainers are responsible for clarifying the standards of acceptable
37
+
behavior and are expected to take appropriate and fair corrective action in
38
+
response to any instances of unacceptable behavior.
39
+
40
+
Project maintainers have the right and responsibility to remove, edit, or
41
+
reject comments, commits, code, wiki edits, issues, and other contributions
42
+
that are not aligned to this Code of Conduct, or to ban temporarily or
43
+
permanently any contributor for other behaviors that they deem inappropriate,
44
+
threatening, offensive, or harmful.
45
+
46
+
## Scope
47
+
48
+
This Code of Conduct applies both within project spaces and in public spaces
49
+
when an individual is representing the project or its community. Examples of
50
+
representing a project or community include using an official project e-mail
51
+
address, posting via an official social media account, or acting as an appointed
52
+
representative at an online or offline event. Representation of a project may be
53
+
further defined and clarified by project maintainers.
54
+
55
+
## Enforcement
56
+
57
+
Instances of abusive, harassing, or otherwise unacceptable behavior may be
58
+
reported by contacting the project team at pvratsalis@gmail.com. All
59
+
complaints will be reviewed and investigated and will result in a response that
60
+
is deemed necessary and appropriate to the circumstances. The project team is
61
+
obligated to maintain confidentiality with regard to the reporter of an incident.
62
+
Further details of specific enforcement policies may be posted separately.
63
+
64
+
Project maintainers who do not follow or enforce the Code of Conduct in good
65
+
faith may face temporary or permanent repercussions as determined by other
66

# Barray
2
+
3
+
Welcome to Barray! Barray is a ruby implementation of bit array that allows creating, querying, storing and restoring a bit array.
4
+
5
+
Bit arrays are a compact, space efficient data structure that represent a group of boolean values. A very common use is in probabilistic data structures (like Bloom filter).
6
+
7
+
Since Ruby does not have a bit or byte data structure, the underlying data structure that stores the bit array in Barray is a string. This makes it super easy to get and store the underlying string in e.g. a file and restore it (e.g. when a service that uses the bit array restarts after a crash or after a deployment).
8
+
9
+
## Installation
10
+
11
+
Add this line to your application's Gemfile:
12
+
13
+
```ruby
14
+
gem 'barray'
15
+
```
16
+
17
+
And then execute:
18
+
19
+
$ bundle
20
+
21
+
Or install it yourself as:
22
+
23
+
$ gem install barray
24
+
25
+
## Usage
26
+
27
+
In order to create a bit array, only its size is required:
28
+
29
+
```ruby
30
+
# Create a bit array that can store 100 bits
31
+
arr = Barray::BitArray.new(100)
32
+
```
33
+
34
+
Some common operations on individual bits that Barray::BitArray supports:
35
+
36
+
```ruby
37
+
# set the 5th bit
38
+
arr.set(5)
39
+
40
+
# get the 5th bit
41
+
arr.get(5)
42
+
43
+
# unset the 5th bit
44
+
arr.unset(5)
45
+
46
+
# toggle the value of the 10th bit
47
+
arr.toggle(10)
48
+
49
+
# returns true if the bit is set
50
+
arr.set?(10)
51
+
```
52
+
53
+
The set and unset operations are idempotent, as the final state of the bit is the same. This is not the case with toggle, as it changes the bit value from 1 to 0 or 0 to 1.
54
+
55
+
Some operations that apply on the bit array itself:
56
+
57
+
```ruby
58
+
# resets the values of all bits to zero
59
+
arr.reset
60
+
61
+
# each_bit returns an iterator with the values of the bits
62
+
arr.each_bit do |bit_value|
63
+
puts bit_value
64
+
end
65
+
66
+
# get the number of set bits
67
+
arr.set_size
68
+
69
+
# alternatively, get the number of unset bits
70
+
arr.unset_size
71
+
```
72
+
73
+
Finally, it is very easy to dump the bit array's data (string), which can be used in order to store the bit array's value (e.g. in a file or in a database) and restore the bit array from that value:
74
+
75
+
```ruby
76
+
arr_value = arr.dump # this can be stored in a file or in a database
77
+
78
+
# at another point (e.g. on service restart after a crash)
79
+
new_arr = Barray::BitArray.new(100)
80
+
new_arr.load(arr_value) # arr_value can be loaded from a file or a database
81
+
```
82
+
83
+
**Note**: The underlying string is duplicated, so loading a bit array is not affected by direct operations on the string value outside the Barray::BitArray public API.
84
+
85
+
## Development
86
+
87
+
After checking out the repo, run `bin/setup` to install dependencies. Then, run `rake spec` to run the tests. You can also run `bin/console` for an interactive prompt that will allow you to experiment.
88
+
89
+
To install this gem onto your local machine, run `bundle exec rake install`. To release a new version, update the version number in `version.rb`, and then run `bundle exec rake release`, which will create a git tag for the version, push git commits and tags, and push the `.gem` file to [rubygems.org](https://rubygems.org).
